- Wednesday, November 23, 2011, 9:44 AM DigiTimes claims HTC (HTCCF.PK) is taking a look at building devices that combine Google's (GOOG) Chrome OS with Android. Though achieving a bit of success with institutions, Chrome OS has struggled to gain a following with consumers, partly due to its need for an Internet connection to access many apps, and partly due to the tablet market's ongoing assault on low-end notebook sales. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, November 23, 2011, 8:26 AM China overtook the U.S. to become the world's largest smartphone market in Q3, according to Strategy Analytics, thanks to an eye-popping 58% Q/Q increase in shipments. Nokia (NOK) is the market's top vendor with 28% share, but Android (GOOG) is seeing massive growth, and the iPhone (AAPL) is doing brisk sales on the high-end. (also) 2 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, November 23, 2011, 7:56 AM Larry Page continues his efforts to narrow Google's (GOOG) focus; the company announces it's shuttering 6 more products/projects, to go with the ones axed in September. Among the initiatives being killed off are Google Gears, Knol, and a much-discussed project to develop renewable energy sources cheaper than coal. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Tuesday, November 22, 2011, 8:04 AM Initial sales data for Nokia's (NOK) Lumia phones is discouraging, with Pac Crest predicting fewer than 1M shipments in Q4 - below a prior forecast of 2M, and a tiny fraction of the ~30M iPhones analysts expect AAPL to ship. It's still early, and new carrier partners and phone releases could bolster Nokia's standing. But the company definitely faces an uphill battle challenging Android (GOOG) and iOS. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Tuesday, November 22, 2011, 3:48 AM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) is in late-stage talks with Google (GOOG) to launch a TV next year using the latter's software. The TV will enable users to surf the Web - including social networks - and check e-mail, with Samsung hoping that the device will help it to fend off price erosion. Comment! [Tech, Consumer, Top Stories]
- Monday, November 21, 2011, 4:43 PM Google Apps (GOOG) has become a threat to Microsoft's (MSFT) Office cash cow ... but how much of one? Many SMBs have embraced Google Apps due to its low costs and useful collaboration features. But outside of a few big wins, large enterprises have been unwilling to abandon Office, citing (among other things) Office's rich feature set, and fears of being dependent on a cloud-based service. 2 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, November 21, 2011, 2:51 PM At 154 years old, The Atlantic hit a milestone in October when ad revenue from its website surpassed print ad revenue for the 1st time, a rarity in the publishing world despite digital's strong growth. Don't blame a slowdown in print as October was also a record month for that side of the business. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, November 21, 2011, 11:44 AM According to Piper, Android Market (GOOG) has generated 93% less app sale revenue for developers than the App Store (AAPL). While not a perfect comparison, given the App Store's head start, and the greater reliance of Android apps on ads, the data is still in-line with existing commentary about the App Store's monetization edge - an edge which could keep it the preferred platform for many developers, in spite of Android's runaway growth. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Monday, November 21, 2011, 10:26 AM Mobile developers are embracing Windows Phone, and thereby boosting its chances of becoming the smartphone world's "third ecosystem." Microsoft's (MSFT) platform now supports over 40K apps, up from less than 10K in February. With the App Store (AAPL) and Android Market (GOOG) each claiming over 500K apps, smaller developers may see Windows Phone as a way to get noticed in a crowded mobile app scene. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, November 21, 2011, 7:55 AM Could Facebook prove a boon for the newspaper industry? The Financial Times reports that, following the introduction of new sharing features, the Independent saw a surge in Facebook-driven traffic for older articles on its site. Moreover, "early indications" are that Facebook visitors are more engaged than those who visit newspaper sites via Google (GOOG) and other search engines. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, November 18, 2011, 12:00 PM Motorola Mobility (MMI), whose shareholders just signed off on the company's merger with Google (GOOG), is "fairly likely" to obtain a patent injunction against Apple's (AAPL) iCloud service by February, according to patent expert Florian Mueller. Mueller claims Apple "experienced a dreadful hearing" today, in which a German court rejected all of its defenses. (previously) 4 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, November 18, 2011, 9:26 AM Canaccord's Mike Walkley is slashing his estimates for Research in Motion (RIMM), after his checks indicate "slowing sell-through trends" for its latest phones. Perhaps more troubling, given RIM's relatively strong international position, are his remarks about international checks indicating slower sales of low-end BlackBerrys, thanks to competition from Nokia's (NOK) Asha phones and low-end Android devices (GOOG). 3 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, November 17, 2011, 5:47 PM More evidence of Apple's (AAPL) growing clout in the enterprise: A survey of traveling professionals finds 45% of them now use an iPhone, up from 31% last year. This puts the iPhone well ahead of Research In Motion's (RIMM) Blackberrys, which were used by 35% of respondents (down slightly Y/Y). Android (GOOG), criticized at times for missing some features enterprises need, doubled its share to 21%. (also) Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, November 17, 2011, 10:42 AM Google (GOOG) has a dominant position in mobile search ads, and its AdMob subsidiary may be nearly as dominant in the market for in-app mobile ads. Analytics firm Xylogic estimates AdMob is used by 89% of the top 1,000 ad-supported Android apps, whereas top rival Millennial Media is used by just 34%. Google stated on its Q3 call that its mobile ad business is on a $2.5B annual run rate. (also) Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, November 17, 2011, 8:14 AM Google's (GOOG) new music service has been dismissed by some as a me-too effort created in response to Apple (AAPL) and Amazon's (AMZN) success, but Matt Rosoff argues its support for independent artists, who can sell music on their own, helps make it a big deal. However, the fact that Warner, one of the big-4 music labels, isn't yet supported could prove a major issue. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, November 16, 2011, 5:44 PM As expected, Google (GOOG) is using an L.A. event to announce the general availability of its Google Music service. The service allows users to store and stream up to 20K songs in the cloud; features deep Google+ and Android Market integration; and also contains an iTunes Match-like ability to stream songs a user owns without having to upload them. But unlike iTunes Match, the service is free. Comment! [Tech]

$YELP is a good company but there recent surge is only going to wake a giant in $GOOG who if wants to enter that market would crush Yelp. - View all 4 replies

Hillbilly Stock Star: They are evolving in Las Vegas, hiring new staff in SF, just watching for now. -
James Hartje: Hiring more staff is there biggest downfall, they are unable to profit as huge sales force costs. They need to improve business model imo.
