GOOG vs. ETF Alternatives
Company Description

- Monday, November 28, 2011, 5:38 PM With smartphones still only making up 27% of global phone shipments (according to VisionMobile), there's still plenty of room for long-term growth. However, current sales are heavily weighted towards developed nations. And that means the developed world's macro problems could easily do a number on near-term demand, as some already fear (I, II) in the wake of HTC's warning. (Gartner data) Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, November 28, 2011, 4:13 PM Peter Kafka's sources claim the DOJ will sign off on Google's (GOOG +4.5%) $400M acquisition of AdMeld, a developer of technology for optimizing a publisher's online ad rates. The AdMeld purchase will bolster Google's efforts to be a dominant player in the display ad market, which is expected to outgrow the search ad market this year. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Monday, November 28, 2011, 2:44 PM Google's (GOOG +4.4%) oft-criticized music service (I, II) shows its serious side with Cyber Monday deals meant to sharply undercut pricing from rivals Amazon (AMZN +6.5%) and Apple (AAPL +3.5%). Albums priced at $1.99 are now available via the Android Market. A key unanswered question: Can Google strategically embed the service on the Android platform and leverage its search dominance to boost sales and market share? 1 Comment [Tech]
- Monday, November 28, 2011, 8:03 AM Reviewers are generally raving about Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy Nexus, the first smartphone to run on Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). The Verge gives it a score of 8.6/10, while Engadget calls it "possibly ... the best phone available today, period." Apple (AAPL) won't be pleased to hear that, even if the Galaxy Nexus' large form factor is likely to keep some iPhone users from jumping ship. (also) 1 Comment [Tech]
- Monday, November 28, 2011, 7:45 AM Citigroup upgrades Google (GOOG +2.8%) to Buy, noting the company is trading below market multiples and is a compelling risk-reward opportunity in the large-cap Internet sector. Other reasons for the upgrade: Google has shown revenue growth and margin stabilization, its Q1 spending surge is paying off, and Facebook is less of a threat. Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas, On the Move]
- Saturday, November 26, 2011, 9:30 AM Apple (AAPL) is obsessed with optimizing the user experience, but in Felix Salmon's view, sub-par experiences are inevitable as long as Apple's customers have motivation to avoid the high fees charged by wireless carriers. Whether it's using a mobile hotspot to avoid buying a 3G iPad plan, or using Google Voice (GOOG) to avoid paying for text messages, customers will keep looking for ways to cut corners. 4 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, November 23, 2011, 2:34 PM Even as Yahoo (YHOO -0.2%) courts prospective buyers (I, II), it's stepping up its ad sales efforts, long seen as a culprit behind its weak ad revenue growth. The latest evidence: Yahoo is restricting the ability of Google (GOOG) and others to re-sell its inventory, out of the hope that Yahoo's own sales teams will obtain higher ad rates. Earlier this month, Yahoo announced it was acquiring ad software firm Interclick. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Wednesday, November 23, 2011, 10:41 AM HTC (HTCCF.PK), which has seen extraordinary growth on the back of Android's (GOOG) success, is slashing its Q4 sales outlook by a full 17-23%, citing macro issues and strong competition. Likely culprits on the competition front include Samsung's Galaxy S II line and Apple's (AAPL) iPhone 4S - the latter's debut on big HTC customer Sprint's (S) network could especially be an issue. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Wednesday, November 23, 2011, 9:44 AM DigiTimes claims HTC (HTCCF.PK) is taking a look at building devices that combine Google's (GOOG) Chrome OS with Android. Though achieving a bit of success with institutions, Chrome OS has struggled to gain a following with consumers, partly due to its need for an Internet connection to access many apps, and partly due to the tablet market's ongoing assault on low-end notebook sales. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, November 23, 2011, 8:26 AM China overtook the U.S. to become the world's largest smartphone market in Q3, according to Strategy Analytics, thanks to an eye-popping 58% Q/Q increase in shipments. Nokia (NOK) is the market's top vendor with 28% share, but Android (GOOG) is seeing massive growth, and the iPhone (AAPL) is doing brisk sales on the high-end. (also) 2 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, November 23, 2011, 7:56 AM Larry Page continues his efforts to narrow Google's (GOOG) focus; the company announces it's shuttering 6 more products/projects, to go with the ones axed in September. Among the initiatives being killed off are Google Gears, Knol, and a much-discussed project to develop renewable energy sources cheaper than coal. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Tuesday, November 22, 2011, 8:04 AM Initial sales data for Nokia's (NOK) Lumia phones is discouraging, with Pac Crest predicting fewer than 1M shipments in Q4 - below a prior forecast of 2M, and a tiny fraction of the ~30M iPhones analysts expect AAPL to ship. It's still early, and new carrier partners and phone releases could bolster Nokia's standing. But the company definitely faces an uphill battle challenging Android (GOOG) and iOS. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Tuesday, November 22, 2011, 3:48 AM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) is in late-stage talks with Google (GOOG) to launch a TV next year using the latter's software. The TV will enable users to surf the Web - including social networks - and check e-mail, with Samsung hoping that the device will help it to fend off price erosion. Comment! [Tech, Consumer, Top Stories]
- Monday, November 21, 2011, 4:43 PM Google Apps (GOOG) has become a threat to Microsoft's (MSFT) Office cash cow ... but how much of one? Many SMBs have embraced Google Apps due to its low costs and useful collaboration features. But outside of a few big wins, large enterprises have been unwilling to abandon Office, citing (among other things) Office's rich feature set, and fears of being dependent on a cloud-based service. 2 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, November 21, 2011, 2:51 PM At 154 years old, The Atlantic hit a milestone in October when ad revenue from its website surpassed print ad revenue for the 1st time, a rarity in the publishing world despite digital's strong growth. Don't blame a slowdown in print as October was also a record month for that side of the business. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, November 21, 2011, 11:44 AM According to Piper, Android Market (GOOG) has generated 93% less app sale revenue for developers than the App Store (AAPL). While not a perfect comparison, given the App Store's head start, and the greater reliance of Android apps on ads, the data is still in-line with existing commentary about the App Store's monetization edge - an edge which could keep it the preferred platform for many developers, in spite of Android's runaway growth. 1 Comment [Tech]

"Yahoo (YHOO) snags Google's (GOOG) Mayer as CEO." Is this more bad news for GOOG, and good news for YHOO? http://yhoo.it/M4nwUq - View all 3 replies
-
Michael Bryant: The article doesn't seem bearish. Basically, YHOO still has problems (nothing changed), but a new CEO could turn the ship. It's a gamble. -
