- Monday, October 24, 2011, 8:28 AM Google (GOOG) plans to launch within the next two weeks an online music store that will tie in closely with Google+, the WSJ reports. To help ensure success, the offering needs the four major record labels, but while EMI (C) and Universal (VIVHY.PK) are in talks, Sony (SNE) and Warner aren't so keen. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Sunday, October 23, 2011, 7:45 PM A report from Digital TV Research predicts global online ad revenues will reach $106.2B in 2016, up 82% from 2010 levels. The report is likely music to Google's (GOOG) ears, but even moreso to Baidu's (BIDU), given its forecast Chinese online ad revenues will nearly triple over this time, to $7.7B. 1 Comment [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Saturday, October 22, 2011, 2:55 PM Sources say Google (GOOG) is in early-stage talks with private-equity firms about financing a bid for Yahoo's (YHOO) core business. It's unclear why Google would want to back such a deal; perhaps a back-door to Yahoo's websites would subject Google to less scrutiny than an outright buy? 9 Comments [Tech, M&A, Top Stories]
- Friday, October 21, 2011, 5:19 PM Microsoft (MSFT), and presumably Nokia (NOK), are striving to bring the cost of Windows Phone devices below $200 - a price competitive with low-end Android (GOOG) hardware. Meanwhile, Qualcomm (QCOM) will remain Microsoft's exclusive chip partner, out of a belief that standardizing on Qualcomm chips will produce a smoother user experience. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, October 21, 2011, 1:54 PM Is U.S. smartphone demand slowing down? Morgan Keegan's Tavis McCourt notes AT&T (T) and Verizon's (VZ) smartphone sales declined Q/Q in Q3, with both iPhone (AAPL) and non-iPhone shipments falling. Smartphones now make up over half of all U.S. phone sales, and 45% of AT&T and Verizon postpaid subscribers have taken up smartphone plans. 1 Comment [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Friday, October 21, 2011, 11:34 AM According to Strategy Analytics, Android's (GOOG) tablet share stood at 27% in Q3 - down from 31% in Q2, but up from 2.3% in Q3 '10. The iPad's (AAPL) share rose 6 points Q/Q, to 67%. Kevin C. Tofel throws cold water on the Android figure, noting devices such as the Nook Color (BKS) are counted, and end-user sales may be far lower than shipments. (also) Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, October 21, 2011, 11:15 AM "I'm going to destroy Android, because it's a stolen product," proclaimed Steve Jobs, according to a biography due out Monday. Jobs, who also criticized other Google (GOOG) products, reportedly had no interest in agreeing to a licensing payoff. Based on recent legal briefs, it looks as if Apple (AAPL) is maintaining Jobs' hard-line stance in its patent disputes. 6 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, October 21, 2011, 8:03 AM Senior Google (GOOG) engineer Steve Yegge, embarrassed that some critical comments of ex-employer Jeff Bezos (AMZN) went public, tries to make amends by praising Bezos in a new post. "People like Jeff are better regarded as hyper-intelligent aliens with a tangential interest in human affairs," he claims. Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, October 20, 2011, 5:36 PM Engadget's teardown of the hyped Samsung/Google (GOOG) Galaxy Nexus finds a Texas Instruments (TXN) audio codec chip to go with the OMAP application processor widely expected to be there. They also find the same Broadcom (BRCM) Wi-Fi/Bluetooth combo chip used in Samsung's hit Galaxy S II line. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Thursday, October 20, 2011, 1:55 PM ABI expects smartphones to account for 24% of Asian phone sales in 2011, up from 17% in 2010. Android (GOOG) is seen as the largest beneficiary, with an estimated smartphone share of 52%. This trend could be a problem for Nokia (NOK +6.4%), which just rode strong Asian "feature phone" sales to a Q3 beat. (China data) Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, October 20, 2011, 9:22 AM Good Technology reports Android (GOOG) phones accounted for 39% of all enterprise smartphone activations it tracked in Q3 (up 6 points Q/Q), while the iPhone (AAPL) accounted for 28% (down 4 points). It attributes the shift to iPhone buyers waiting for a new model. Meanwhile, the iPad accounted for a whopping 96% of all tablet activations. (previously) 1 Comment [Tech]
- Wednesday, October 19, 2011, 4:37 PM Groupon is considering an an offering valuing the company at $12B, according to two sources. The float is expected to be less than 10% of that valuation. It's a far cry from earlier this year when a valuation as high as $30B had been discussed, but above Google's late 2010 offer of $6B. 2 Comments [Tech, Breaking News]
- Wednesday, October 19, 2011, 3:10 PM Expectations are high for Amazon's (AMZN) Kindle Fire, with many predicting the Android (GOOG) tablet will be a top-selling gadget this holiday season. Rodman & Renshaw forecasts 5M Q4 shipments, while UBS is optimistic about the Fire's ability to create Amazon Prime subscribers, who tend to make far more purchases than other Amazon users. (previously) Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, October 19, 2011, 2:37 PM With an extension of Microsoft's (MSFT) search deal with Yahoo (YHOO) under the belt, Steve Ballmer continues to tout the "success" of Bing. But with Bing's global search share still just a fraction of Google's (GOOG), and Microsoft's online division racking up huge losses, many analysts think Microsoft is "just chewing up [its] resources." (earlier) Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, October 19, 2011, 8:40 AM Though analysts are defending Apple (AAPL), shares remain down 5% premarket. One point of concern may be Apple's 9% Y/Y decline in revenue per retail store, in spite of strong Mac and iPad sales. This is likely raising questions about whether North American iPhone demand was affected by Android's (GOOG) boom, in addition to iPhone 5 anticipation. - Wednesday, October 19, 2011, 4:45 AM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) and Google (GOOG) unveil their Galaxy Nexus smartphone, which includes facial recognition for unlocking the device. The Nexus also runs on the latter's latest "Ice Cream Sandwich" software, an Android platform that, like Apple's iOS (AAPL), can run on tablets and smartphones. 4 Comments [Tech, Consumer]

In one day? No way $FB will come close to $AAPL or $GOOG. I speculate if it has an amazing IPO jump trading at around $70-$90 - View all 0 replies
