Wednesday, May 22, 11:04 AM Wal-Mart (WMT -0.2%) finds a friend in Gap (GPS -0.3%) CEO Glenn Murphy who sided with the retail giant during a shareholder/analyst call when asked why the company didn't sign a highly-publicized Bangladesh building safety accord. The ratings agency says GPS has demonstrated consistent positive operating performance in recent quarters, and it expects the company to be able to sustain recent trends in same-store sales growth and margin expansion. A healthy rise in same-store sales of 7% comes during the same month other retailers were lamenting the slow start to the spring buying season due to lousy weather patterns. Tuesday, May 7, 10:36 AM Gap vs. Lululemon: Gap (GPS +0.1%) is upgraded by Wells Fargo to Outperform from Market Perform, with the investment firm saying the retailer has under-appreciated growth opportunities. One of those revenue channels could be Athleta which is looking more and more like a serious challenger to Lululemon (LULU +0.1%), according to a number of retail analysts. In an anecdotal aside, SA notes Athleta opened a new store in a Midwest mall just two storefronts down from Lululemon. Comment! [Consumer]
Tuesday, May 7, 9:29 AM Retail sales numbers for April could be a tad weaker than expected after weekly reports from Redbook and ICSC-Goldman on chain store sales both came in a bit below expectations. Retail read-through: Weather and swings in gas prices seemed to impact store traffic to malls (KSS, DDS, JCP, LTD, GPS, ANF, AEO) and supercenters (WMT, COST TGT), but economists think consumer confidence on the high end (TIF, RL, SKS, COH, BBBY) just might be on the rise.
