- Tuesday, June 11, 8:11 AM Retail watch: A little dysfunction at Lululemon isn't a terrible thing for companies trying to jump into its lucrative niche business. Gap (GPS) tops the list with its new Athleta stores popping up at malls just down the row from Lululemon outlets - while Nike (NKE) and Under Armour (UA) are also in the yoga apparel hunt. Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, June 7, 4:21 PM Canaccord revises its estimates for Gap (GPS) following the company's May same-store numbers. Canaccord now sees Q2 and FY13 EPS of $0.60 and $2.65 respectively (consensus is $0.57 and $2.70) and comps growth of 4.7% and 1.6%. At current prices, the stock is fairly valued, the firm says. Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, June 7, 10:08 AM More on Gap (GPS +2.2%) May sales: The retailer puts in a solid month to easily beat estimates on comparable store sales. By brand, Old Navy Global and Gap Global roared to +8% gains while Banana Republic Global was flat for the month. 1 Comment [Consumer, On the Move]

Thursday, June 6, 4:02 PM
Gap (GPS) May same-store sales:+7%. Total Sales +11% to 1.22B. (PR)
Comment! [Consumer] - Monday, June 3, 3:18 PM Gap (GPS -0.3%) says it will enter the market in Paraguay (via its partner Neutral, which launched the brand in Uruguay last year) and Hungary (via Gottex Brands) and also announces it will open the first stand-alone Banana Republic store in Mexico in H2. The moves are evidence that GPS is "continuing to deliver on its global growth plans," the company notes. In an article published over the weekend, SA contributor Dallas Salazar says GPS' growth "is just getting started." (PR) Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, May 31, 9:48 AM A better-than-expected quarter from Guess? is helping to lift several sector peers. The company's comments on an upswing in sales momentum in Q2 appears to be lifting sentiment. Advancers: Gap (GPS) +1.1%, Coldwater Creek (CWTR) +1.3%, Cache (CACH) +1.5%, Urban Outfitters (URBN) +1.2%. Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, May 31, 8:45 AM A below par reading on personal spending for April was affected by lower gas prices and home heating bills and isn't a biting indictment on retail spending (AEO, ANF, ARO, BBBY, BBY, BJ, CHS, COH, COST, DG, DLTR, GPS, HD, JCP, JWN, KSS, LOW, LTD, M, NDN, NKE, ODP, PIR, PLCE, RSH, SKS, SPLS, TGT, TJX, URBN, WMT, WSM, ZLC), according to economists. Auto sales also cooled off just a bit in April which had an impact. So far, retail trends have been largely favorable in May as the height of the spring selling season shifted a few weeks later. 4 Comments [Consumer]
- Thursday, May 30, 7:15 AM A number of retailers are setting up shop in Mexico to test the waters with stand-alone stores amid an alluring decline in tariffs in the nation. The aspirational aspect of young Mexican consumers bodes well for Gap (GPS), American Eagle Outfitters (AEO), Hennes & Mauritz (HMRZF.PK), and Forever 21 - but the influx of new retailers has cut into sales for the local arm of Wal-Mart (WMT). 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Thursday, May 23, 4:10 PM More on Gap's (GPS) Q1: The company reports comparable store sales gained 2% during the quarter with Gap, Old Navy, and Banana Republic all making a solid contribution but nothing remarkable. Operating margin expanded 290 bps to 14.2%. Store count: Athleta +5 to 40; +2 China stores to 49; Gap North America -7 to 983, Total stores +21 to 3,428. The retailer reaffirms its full year EPS guidance of $2.52-$2.60 vs. $2.72 consensus. GPS -1.0% AH. (PR) Comment! [Consumer, Earnings]
- Thursday, May 23, 4:01 PM Gap (GPS): Q1 EPS of $0.71 beats by $0.05. Revenue of $3.73B (+7% Y/Y) beats by $0.05B. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News]
- Thursday, May 23, 7:44 AM Gap Inc (GPS) declares $0.15/share quarterly dividend, in line with previous. Forward yield 1.46%. For shareholders of record July 10. Payable July 31. Ex-div date July 8. (PR) Comment! [Dividends]

- Wednesday, May 22, 11:04 AM Wal-Mart (WMT -0.2%) finds a friend in Gap (GPS -0.3%) CEO Glenn Murphy who sided with the retail giant during a shareholder/analyst call when asked why the company didn't sign a highly-publicized Bangladesh building safety accord. The exec notes the framework of the agreement is European-based and it needs some U.S. accommodations before Gap and other U.S. retailers can become comfortable with it. (transcript) Comment!
- Wednesday, May 22, 8:44 AM Gap (GPS) CEO Glenn Murphy thinks the retailer can use its digital know-how to increase market share outside of North America without creating a giant retail footprint. With Gap's share price running up to $41.67 per share to stretch valuation out a bit, more questions on Gap's ability to grow sales and profits are being raised. Though not quite on the hotseat, Murphy's international moves will be closely scrutinized. Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, May 21, 2:59 PM Battle back on: 19 retailers say they will opt out of a $7.25B settlement with Visa (V +0.2%) and MasterCard (MA +0.7%) over interchange fees and will consider additional legal action against the companies. The highly-anticipated move from the heavyweight retailers (WMT, GPS, COST, NKE) comes about a week before a court deadline in the case. 1 Comment [Consumer]
