- Thursday, May 23, 4:10 PM More on Gap's (GPS) Q1: The company reports comparable store sales gained 2% during the quarter with Gap, Old Navy, and Banana Republic all making a solid contribution but nothing remarkable. Operating margin expanded 290 bps to 14.2%. Store count: Athleta +5 to 40; +2 China stores to 49; Gap North America -7 to 983, Total stores +21 to 3,428. The retailer reaffirms its full year EPS guidance of $2.52-$2.60 vs. $2.72 consensus. GPS -1.0% AH. (PR) Comment! [Consumer, Earnings]

- Wednesday, May 22, 11:04 AM Wal-Mart (WMT -0.2%) finds a friend in Gap (GPS -0.3%) CEO Glenn Murphy who sided with the retail giant during a shareholder/analyst call when asked why the company didn't sign a highly-publicized Bangladesh building safety accord. The exec notes the framework of the agreement is European-based and it needs some U.S. accommodations before Gap and other U.S. retailers can become comfortable with it. (transcript) Comment!
- Wednesday, May 22, 8:44 AM Gap (GPS) CEO Glenn Murphy thinks the retailer can use its digital know-how to increase market share outside of North America without creating a giant retail footprint. With Gap's share price running up to $41.67 per share to stretch valuation out a bit, more questions on Gap's ability to grow sales and profits are being raised. Though not quite on the hotseat, Murphy's international moves will be closely scrutinized. Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, May 21, 2:59 PM Battle back on: 19 retailers say they will opt out of a $7.25B settlement with Visa (V +0.2%) and MasterCard (MA +0.7%) over interchange fees and will consider additional legal action against the companies. The highly-anticipated move from the heavyweight retailers (WMT, GPS, COST, NKE) comes about a week before a court deadline in the case. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Wednesday, May 15, 9:52 AM Citigroup gushes over the execution by Gap (GPS +0.5%) with its Old Navy chain, noting its apparel has moved into the "must-have" category for key demographics. The recent strength of Old Navy follows a pattern of solid moves by Gap management and prompts Citi to raise shares to a Buy rating from Neutral. Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, May 14, 1:31 PM Retail analysts think a lucrative market exists for plus-sized yoga apparel and activewear for the first company to invest and market in the category. The early read: Gap's (GPS +1.2%) Athleta brand might have the upper hand as it already offers yoga clothing up to size 20 compared to Lululemon's (LULU +1.8%) biggest size of 12. 4 Comments [Consumer]
- Monday, May 13, 9:22 AM Hennes & Mauritz (HMRF.PK) is the first major retailer to agree to a new set of fire and building rules set forth by the International Labour Organization and trade unions following a deadly factory building collapse last month in Bangladesh. Gap (GPS) and Wal-Mart (WMT) are expected to feel some pressure to follow suit. 1 Comment [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Friday, May 10, 5:48 PM Standard & Poor's lifts its credit rating on Gap (GPS) by one notch to BBB- from BB+ with a stable outlook, bringing the retailer back into investment-grade territory. The ratings agency says GPS has demonstrated consistent positive operating performance in recent quarters, and it expects the company to be able to sustain recent trends in same-store sales growth and margin expansion. Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, May 10, 7:31 AM Did Gap (GPS) hit a home run in April with its online and mobile channels? A healthy rise in same-store sales of 7% comes during the same month other retailers were lamenting the slow start to the spring buying season due to lousy weather patterns. Total sales rose 6.9% to $3.73B during Q1 to also topple estimates, according to the company's projections. GPS +7.2% premarket. Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, May 9, 4:05 PM Gap (GPS) says same-store sales rose 7% in April, led by a 8% gain for Gap Global and 9% Old Navy Global. Q1 EPS is forecast to come in at $0.68-$0.69 vs. $0.56 consensus. GPS +5.5% AH. 1 Comment [Consumer, On the Move]
- Tuesday, May 7, 10:36 AM Gap vs. Lululemon: Gap (GPS +0.1%) is upgraded by Wells Fargo to Outperform from Market Perform, with the investment firm saying the retailer has under-appreciated growth opportunities. One of those revenue channels could be Athleta which is looking more and more like a serious challenger to Lululemon (LULU +0.1%), according to a number of retail analysts. In an anecdotal aside, SA notes Athleta opened a new store in a Midwest mall just two storefronts down from Lululemon. Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, May 7, 9:29 AM Retail sales numbers for April could be a tad weaker than expected after weekly reports from Redbook and ICSC-Goldman on chain store sales both came in a bit below expectations. Retail read-through: Weather and swings in gas prices seemed to impact store traffic to malls (KSS, DDS, JCP, LTD, GPS, ANF, AEO) and supercenters (WMT, COST TGT), but economists think consumer confidence on the high end (TIF, RL, SKS, COH, BBBY) just might be on the rise. Also, with online sales de-emphasized in the weekly chain store reports - Internet whiz kids Macy's (M) and Urban Outfitters (URBN) could still outperform even if mall parking lots aren't packed. 1 Comment [Consumer, U.S. Economy]
