Apple is way underpriced, RIM is way overpriced. Other than that, no problems with this article. The quote that the iPhone is not the only phone to show off to your friends could be true. If you friends are not very bright.

Why I Prefer TomTom Over Garmin [view article]
First of all I think the writer has never used one of the current phones as a GPS guide in his car. If he did he would know how crappy this works. Thats why there still is marketshare to gain for the nuvifone because this will be a phone that can easily compete with current PND's AND Smartphones.Second of all in the history of TeleAtlas they have never made ANY profit. With the current worth off TOM2 they have to spend more money on TeleAtlas then Tom2 is worth itself.
Garmin is a company that has own money invested and own their own development. TOM2 has everyting board out.
Besides that Garmin has Automotive, Marine, Aviation, Outdoor and Fitness products. Everyone of these markets offer better margins than Automotive and all of these markets offer a lot of growth.
My guess is that Garmin will continue to grow and maintain a solid company and TomTom will be bought by a bigger company that want's to add GPS devices to their assortment without having create it itself (e.g. Philips?). Reply

I am absolutely flabbergasted that everyone does not realize that smart phones are the killer of Garmin. It has amazed me since Nokia bought the mapping software company. What are these people thinking?? This application has been commoditized - one trick vendors will die. ReplyAttention Shoppers: Garmin Now 21% Off [view article]
I live in Europe too and a year ago I would agree with you TJ it was either TomTom or Garmin with much more TomTom than Garmin. But lately in the cars around me in traffic I see either a "different" brand GPS or a Garmin, TomTom really seems to be selling less (in my region anyway).
Garmin did buy the distributors in my region last year so perhaps there's a correlation.

I have used both Garmin and Tom Tom; the only reason I bought the Tom Tom is because it was cheaper as a result of the price war which Tom Tom started last fall. The Tom Tom sucks compared to the Garmin. Reply

That's good to know, TJ. Thanks for sharing. I can only speak about the American market. There's no doubt I knew TomTom was significant competition, but perhaps larger than I thought! ReplyBye Bye Bear - Cramer's Mad Money (7/30/08) [view article]

I live in Europe, and TomTom (not Garmin) is the household word for a GPS. And I know quite a few folks who have bought a Garmin only to evenually replace it with a TomTom. I think Garmin's competition is stiffer than you mention. ReplyAt Its 52-Week Low, Is Garmin a Buy? [view article]
