The U.S. mall vacancy rate declined to 8.6% in Q4 from 8.7% in Q3 and the cycle peak of 9.4% in 2011 Q3, according to Reis. The strip mall vacancy rate fell to 10.7% from 10.8%. Rents barely budged. Disappointed with the middling improvement, Reis' Ryan Severino notes vacancy rates are barely declining even with minimal mall completions occurring.

The U.S. shopping mall vacancy rate falls to 9.2% in Q4 from an 11-year high of 9.4% previously, according to REIS. Worried about more high-profile closures coming from firms like Sears and Gap, the Reis isn't declaring victory for malls just yet. The vacancy rate was as low as 5.5% in 2007.

With many homebuilders (ETF: XHB) set to report earnings in the next two weeks, MKM Partners thinks the time is right to buy into the group, favoring Pulte (PHM) and D.R. Horton (DHI) because they’ll be closest to profitability; money-making builders are still relatively rare. She also likes Developers Diversified Realty (DDR) and Glimcher Realty (GRT).

Stifel goes bullish on REITs. Upgrades nine to Buy from Hold: WRI, NNN, CBL, PEI, CDR, GRT, RPT, KRG, LSE. It expects REITs to outperform the S&P, and thinks short-covering could be a catalyst.

The_American CSA, RSO , NLY , AGNC , GRT is best in breed REITs as we had a nice rally and hopefully continues to go. I am long GRT , GE , F , S did well
