GSK vs. ETF Alternatives
Company Description
Human Genome Sciences, Inc. (“HGS” or the “Company”) is a commercially focused biopharmaceutical company advancing toward the market with three products in late-stage development: BENLYSTAtm for systemic lupus erythematosus (“SLE”), ZALBINtm for chronic hepatitis C, and raxibacumab for... More

- Thursday, July 5, 2012, 4:08 PM GlaxoSmithKline's (GSK) $3B hit from the DoJ earlier this week is being billed as the “largest health care fraud settlement in U.S. history... unprecedented in both size and scope.” And nobody cares. Why? Because investors know that over the past decade, the two drugs behind the scandal, Paxil an Wellbutrin, together brought in more than seven times the amount of the settlement. Paxil brought in close to $14B, and Wellbutrin $8.5B. As is frequently the case in cases of corporate misdoings, crime and punishment aren't always relative. Comment! [Healthcare, U.S. Economy]
- Tuesday, July 3, 2012, 2:34 PM GlaxoSmithKline's (GSK) pleading guilty to illegally marketing drugs and withholding safety data brings to the forefront dark reminders of the industry's past aggressive marketing tactics. After much scandal, the industry has cleaned up its act, however, many of the scars still remain visible. Furthermore, as the regulatory environment constricts, pipelines dwindle and sales pressures mount, just how far will the industry go to remain true to the reforms it's put in place? Comment! [Healthcare]
- Monday, July 2, 2012, 11:03 AM The Department of Justice says GlaxoSmithKline (GSK +1%) will plead guilty and pay $3B in fines - including a $950M criminal fine - to resolve fraud allegations and failure to report safety data. The complaint alleges [[GSK} attempted to defraud doctors by promoting false and misleading studies and treatment guidelines to convince them to use its drugs, including blockbusters like Paxil and Advair. - Monday, July 2, 2012, 8:18 AM GSK's (GSK) once-daily lung drug LAMA/LABA performed well in late-stage testing in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. GSK, which plans to begin filing for regulatory approval at the end of the year, hopes LAMA/LABA will be a successor to Advair. GSK is developing the drug with Theravance (THRX), whose shares are +8%. Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Friday, June 29, 2012, 8:20 AM Human Genome (HGSI) +1.1% premarket as a note mulls the potential for a more robust bid from GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). RBC Capital thinks HGSI might draw a bid of $15/share, up from the current $13 bid. GSK again extends its tender offer until July 20 in hopes HGSI shareholders finally will relent. Comment! [Healthcare, M&A]
- Thursday, June 28, 2012, 10:53 AM Pharmaceutical stocks are down following the Supreme Court healthcare opinion, although not dramatically: AZN -0.4%, GSK -1.6%, SNY -0.8%, PFE -0.8%, ABT -0.8%, MRK -0.7%, LLY -1%, WPI -0.9%, NVS -0.7%, JNJ -0.4%. iShares Dow Jones US Healthcare ETF (IYH) -0.95%, the Health Care SPDR (XLV) is -1.3%. 2 Comments [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Monday, June 18, 2012, 10:52 AM The pharma industry escapes being imposed with liabilities of billions of dollars after the Supreme Court rules by 5-4 that GSK (GSK +0.8%) doesn't have to pay its reps overtime for visiting doctors' offices to promote its medicines. Two GSK employees had appealed a lower-court ruling that they were "outside sales" personnel exempt from overtime pay requirements. 4 Comments [Healthcare, Top Stories]
- Thursday, June 14, 2012, 5:14 PM The FDA reportedly approves GlaxoSmithKline's (GSK) Menhibrix children's meningitis vaccine. The vaccine is meant for children aged from six weeks to 18 months and targets two types of bacteria that can cause meningitis, meningococcal disease and Hib disease. Comment! [Healthcare]
- Tuesday, June 12, 2012, 11:32 AM Baird calls rumors of a GlaxoSmithKline (GSK +1.7%) takeout of Biomarin (BMRN +2.2%) "gossip" after an article in the Telegraph suggested the company was in " advanced" talks to acquire the drug developer. Baird notes many details were lacking in the report, and, more curiously, is that such a deal would happen before "transformational data readouts" from clinical studies that are expected by the end of the year. A "takeout does make sense, just not now," the firm asserts. Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Tuesday, June 12, 2012, 9:43 AM Human Genome (HGSI +1.35% to $13.47) investors appear to be betting GSK (GSK) will raise its $13/share bid for the company. HGSI has traded above the offer since rejecting it in April, and less than 1% of investors tended their shares to GSK before the U.K. firm extended its proposal last week. A bid of $15 would overcome HGSI's poison pill. Comment! [M&A, Healthcare]
- Tuesday, June 12, 2012, 9:07 AM BioMarin Pharmaceutical (BMRN) +4.8% premarket on rumors that Glaxo (GSK) is in advanced discussions toward a $5B buyout of BMRN. Last week, Shire (SHPGY, SHPGF.PK) also was said to be stalking the company. Glaxo is already engaged in a hostile $2.6B takeover bid for Human Genome Sciences. Comment! [Healthcare, M&A, On the Move]
- Tuesday, June 12, 2012, 8:19 AM (GSK) is making another bolt-on acquisition to strengthen its lineup, agreeing to pay an initial £146M ($227M) to acquire eczema drug Toctino from Swiss biotech Basilea (BPMUF.PK). GSK will pay another £50M if Toctino passes its Phase III trial and receives FDA approval, and royalties on U.S. sales starting three years after launch. Comment! [M&A, Healthcare]
- Friday, June 8, 2012, 9:43 AM Glaxo (GSK +1.3%) extends its $2.6B offer to buy Human Genome Sciences (HGSI +0.2%) until the end of June; HGSI responds that the unchanged $13/share offer is "inadequate and does not reflect the value inherent" in the company. Comment! [Healthcare, M&A]
- Thursday, June 7, 2012, 9:05 AM The FDA OKs XenoPort's (XNPT -3.6%) and GSK's Horizant drug to treat post-herpetic neuralgia, or nerve pain related to shingles, which affects around 100K people a year in the U.S. GSK will pay XenoPort a $10M milestone payment following the first sales of the treatment. XenoPort is already approved for restless legs syndrome. Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Tuesday, June 5, 2012, 6:25 PM Human Genome Sciences (HGSI) says several abstracts related to Benlysta and systemic lupus erythematosus will be presented at the EULAR Annual European Congress of Rheumatology, being held in Berlin, Germany from June 6 to June 9. A total of seven abstracts - five clinical trial data abstracts and two health economics and outcomes research abstracts - have been accepted for presentation. Comment! [Healthcare]
- Monday, June 4, 2012, 1:28 PM Bristol Myers' (BMY) BMS-936558, which shrank tumors in advanced lung, kidney and skin cancer in 18%-28% of patients, is at the forefront of treatments designed to enable the body's immune-system to kill cancer cells. Other firms in this "revolution in the making" include Merck (MRK), Roche (RHHBY.PK), Teva (TEVA) and GSK (GSK). Comment! [Healthcare]
