- Tuesday, June 18, 9:43 AM More on GSK (GSK -0.3%) / Aspen (APNHF.PK) deal: Reuters speculates that GSK's sale of its thrombosis drug brands Arixtra and Fraxiparine to Aspen could be worth £700M, or twice this year's anticipated sales of around £350M. That would be down from £420M in 2013 and £510M in 2011. Around 1,000 GSK workers, mostly in France, would transfer to Aspen. News of the prospective sale prompted speculation that GSK may look to offload other older drugs. Comment! [Healthcare, M&A]
- Tuesday, June 18, 8:33 AM GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has received an offer from South Africa's Aspen Pharmacare (APNHF.PK) for its thrombosis drug brands Arixtra and Fraxiparine (excluding China, India and Pakistan), and the related manufacturing site. GSK said any sale would fit in with its strategy of focusing on growth products and the delivery of its pipeline. (PR) Comment! [Healthcare, M&A]
- Thursday, June 13, 8:15 AM Tobacco companies (MO, PM, LO, RAI, BTI, ITYBY.PK) think they have the answer to where to find revenue growth with the advent of electronic cigarettes across the world, even as regulators struggle with the concept of if "safer" products are tolerable enough to allow the devices to work as a gateway to reducing nicotine addiction. If the future of e-cigarettes is as bright as tobacco players make it out to be, Pfizer (PFE) and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) could see demand for their own nicotine addiction products turn lower. Comment! - Thursday, June 13, 3:15 AM GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has been looking into claims from an anonymous tipster that its Chinese sales staff bribed doctors to prescribe drugs between 2004 and 2010, including for unauthorized uses. However, GSK said that it has so far not found any evidence of corruption or bribery. The allegations come after GSK recently reached multi-billion dollar settlements with U.S. authorities over its drug-marketing tactics. Comment! [Healthcare, Top Stories]
- Tuesday, June 11, 9:30 AM GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has fired the head of its Chinese R&D unit, Jingwu Zhang, following an investigation into allegations of data fabrication in a 2010 scientific paper on multiple sclerosis (MS) that was published in Nature Medicine. Another scientist has resigned, while GSK has put another three on "administrative leave" pending a final review. SA author Derek Lowe has lots of questions, including "how many more things have been faked as well?" (PR) 2 Comments [Healthcare]
- Friday, June 7, 5:12 PM 20 out of 26 panelists vote to either ease restrictions or eliminate them entirely on GlaxoSmithKline's (GSK) diabetes treatment Avandia after a two-day meeting at which FDA officials considered the results of a Duke University study which reportedly supports GSK's contention that heart worries surrounding the drug may be overblown. Comment! [Healthcare]
- Wednesday, June 5, 8:58 AM An FDA advisory panel starts a two-day meeting to discuss Avandia, GlaxoSmithKline's (GSK +0.4%) former blockbuster diabetes pill whose sales plummeted after the agency said in 2010 that it could only be used only in rare cases due to fears that it caused heart attacks. The options are to remove, modify or leave Avandia's safety restrictions in place, or withdraw the drug entirely. However, even if the FDA eases those restrictions, sales of Avandia aren't expected to significantly increase. (Webcast) 1 Comment [Healthcare]
- Tuesday, June 4, 11:12 AM Response Genetics (RGDX -2.7%) says it's reached its second milestone payment hurdle in conjunction with a licensing agreement with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) signed in 2010 to develop its BRAF-Inhibitor Tafinlar. Under the terms of the agreement, GSK gained certain rights to Response Genetics' proprietary PCR analysis technology and diagnostic expertise which received premarket approval from the FDA in May. Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Monday, June 3, 10:04 AM An FDA panel is due to vote this week on whether to lift the restrictions on Avandia, GlaxoSmithKline's (GSK +0.3%) former blockbuster diabetes pill whose sales plummeted after the agency said in 2010 that it could only be used only in rare cases due to fears that it caused heart attacks. Following a new positive analysis of old data, two panels will decide whether to remove, modify or leave Avandia's safety restrictions in place, or withdraw the drug entirely. Comment! [Healthcare]
- Sunday, June 2, 3:07 AM GlaxoSmithKline's (GSK) Votrient, which is approved to treat kidney cancer or soft-tissue sarcoma, extended the time taken for ovarian cancer to worsen in patients by an average of 5.6 months in a Phase III trial. The results suggest that Votrient could be used as a "maintenance" therapy, although an interim analysis found no difference in overall survival rates between the drug and a placebo. The findings were presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. (PR) Comment! [Healthcare]
- Thursday, May 30, 4:19 AM The FDA has approved GlaxoSmithKline's (GSK) Tafinlar and Mekinist drugs for treating melanoma that has spread or can't be surgically removed. The drugs, which are aimed at patients with certain gene mutations, are expected to generate annual sales of $622M by 2016, and will compete with Roche's (RHHBY.OB) Zelboraf and Bristol-Myers Squibb's (BMY) Yervoy. GSK's shares -0.4% in London. (PR) Comment! [Healthcare]
- Wednesday, May 29, 3:28 PM GlaxoSmithKline (GSK -3%) says a combination of ARZERRA and chlorambucil has met its primary endpoint of improving progression free survival times (versus treatment with chlorambucil alone) in a pivotal Phase 3 trial with partner Genmab (GNMSF.PK). No unexpected safety issues were encountered. (PR) Comment! [Healthcare]
- Wednesday, May 29, 9:58 AM AstraZeneca's (AZN -1.5%) $443M deal to acquire Omthera puts the U.K. company at "distinct commercial advantage" over Amarin (AMRN +0.3%), says Decision Resources' Paramjit Narang. Omthera's Epanova drug "offers higher and more constant bioavailability, and arguably better efficacy" in lowering triglyceride than Amarin's Vascepa, and it "lacks the gastrointestinal side effects of the market incumbent Lovaza," which is sold by GSK (GSK -2%). Narang reckons Epanova's annual sales could peak at $1B. 9 Comments [Healthcare, M&A]
- Wednesday, May 29, 9:03 AM GlaxoSmithKline (GSK -2.3%) pays €250M for Swiss-based Okairos, a developer of vaccine platform technologies that was spun out of Merck in 2007. Okairos specializes in vaccines that target the immune system's CD8 T-cells, with its technology based on chimpanzee viruses. The company's products are undergoing Phase II trials for hepatitis C and malaria. (PR) Comment! [Healthcare]

- Tuesday, May 28, 9:58 AM More on Deutsche Bank's GlaxoSmithKline (GSK +1.8%) upgrade: Analyst Mark Clark says FY13 guidance "looks achievable," and notes that the regulatory environment should be favorable regarding melanoma, HIV, and especially respiratory drug candidates. Additionally, the pipeline may be underappreciated, he says. 4 Comments [Healthcare]
