- Monday, May 20, 1:37 PM More on Royalty Pharma/ Elan (ELN +3.3%): Royalty says ELN "dramatically overpaid" for its 21% participation interest in future royalty payments from Theravance's (THRX -5.9%) respiratory collaborations with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK +0.2%). The deal was made in a "hasty" fashion Royalty claims, and says the same might well be said of ELN's purchases of AOP Oprhan Pharmaceuticals and a 48% stake in NewBridge Pharmaceuticals (for a combined cost of $380M). The new offer ($12.50/share) is contingent upon shareholders voting against the THRX deal. Comment! [Healthcare, M&A]
- Monday, May 13, 5:49 AM Elan (ELN) will make a one time cash payment of $1B to Theravance (THRX) for a 21% participation interest in future royalty payments from THRX's four respiratory collaborations with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) including the recently-approved Breo Ellipta/Relvar treatment for COPD. The news comes on the heels of THRX's earnings report and concurrent announcement that it will split into two separate publicly traded companies. (PR) Comment! [Healthcare]
- Friday, May 10, 12:09 PM GlaxoSmithKline (GSK +1.5%) and Theravance (THRX +11%) both move higher today after the FDA approves Breo Ellipta for the treatment of airflow obstruction in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, including chronic bronchitis and/or emphysema. The approval was widely expected after a federal advisory panel endorsed the product last month. Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Wednesday, May 8, 11:38 AM The 5% yield barrier on junk bonds (HYG, JNK) is broken for the first time ever, the Barclays U.S. High Yield Index sliding to 4.97% (prior to Jan., the yield had never fallen below 6%). Spreads to Treasurys remain at a not-unreasonable 406 bps, far wider than the record-tight 223 points reached just as the gates of financial heck were about to open in 2007. In the meantime, the equity of highly non-wobbly companies like RDS.A, VOD, and GSK yields in the area of 5%. "We don't want to question the market," writes the FT's David Keohane, "but: what the (heck)?" 7 Comments
- Monday, May 6, 1:36 PM Merck (MRK -1.3%) gets no love today from the FDA's approval of Liptruxet late Friday, as the stock is likely dragged down with the rest of the big pharma names on the back of a CNBC report that criticizes their earnings so far. The article points to the fact that pharmaceutical companies have seen a 4.7% contraction in earnings, and a 3.2% drop in revenue this quarter. Why? Morningstar's Damien Cover says there are two primary reasons: FX impact, especially from the yen, and intensified generic competition from patent losses. Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Monday, April 29, 10:30 AM GlaxoSmithKline (GSK +0.1%) breaks off its relationship with Impax Laboratories (IPXL -1.1%) regarding the experimental Parkinson's drug Rytary due to "delays in the anticipated regulatory approval and launch dates in the countries in which GSK has rights to commercialize the product." GSK was working to develop and market Rytary outside of the U.S. and Taiwan. IPXL shares have yet to fully recover from a steep decline in March stemming from FDA concerns about the testing and evaluation process for Rytary. (PR) 1 Comment [Healthcare]
- Friday, April 26, 12:19 PM GlaxoSmithKline (GSK +0.4%) says it's submitted a regulatory application in the European Union for umeclidinium bromide, or UMEC, an investigational once-daily medicine for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Regulatory filings are pending in the U.S. and planned for other countries during the course of 2013. Comment! [Healthcare, Global & FX]
- Thursday, April 18, 8:17 AM Theravance (THRX) looks poised for a strong session after an FDA advisory panel recommends approval of a once-daily COPD inhaled treatment option (Breo Ellipta) the company is developing with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). Some color on the story: 1) the drug will be called "Relvar" in the U.S. 2) Annual sales should come in at ~$337M next year. 3) Treatment may be used in conjunction with GSK's $8B per year Advair. 4) Relvar will compete with AstraZeneca's Symbicort which had sales of $3.19B in 2012. THRX shares +16% premarket. 1 Comment [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Wednesday, April 17, 2:39 PM An FDA advisory panel votes in favor of Theravance's (THRX) Breo Ellipta, saying the inhaler was safe and effective at treating COPD. The agency's pulmonary-allergy advisory committee is still reviewing the drug and has to vote on whether the product should be marketed, but today's positive vote makes it likely the panel will vote affirmatively to support approval. Shares remain halted. 1 Comment [Healthcare]
- Wednesday, April 17, 10:47 AM Shares of Theravance (THRX) remain in limbo after being halted by Nasdaq earlier this morning, as the FDA meets today to discuss the company's new drug application for Breo Ellipta, a dry powder inhaler that treats chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The drug is being sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK -0.9%). Comment! [Healthcare]
- Tuesday, April 16, 2:05 PM Biogen Idec (BIIB +1.2%) and Roche's (RHHBY.PK) Genetech lose their appeal made in a patent infringement case against GlaxoSmithKline (GSK -0.1%). The Court upheld the interpretation of a BIIB patent covering the cancer drug Arzerra, ruling that GSK didn't infringe upon the patent. Comment! [Healthcare]
- Tuesday, April 16, 9:03 AM A downgrade from Leerink Swann to Market Perform from Outperform adds to Sarepta Therapeutics' (SRPT) problems. The FDA's request has "prolonged uncertainty" and the need to run a Phase III trial preapproval could give GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and Prosensa's drisapersen treatment a first-to-market advantage. SRPT shares now -10.17% premarket. 2 Comments [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Monday, April 15, 11:12 AM Theravance (THRX +20.6%) tops the leader board as a staff report suggests Breo — a COPD treatment the company is developing with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK +3.1%) — could be set for approval by the FDA which will evaluate a recommendation Wednesday. There were some questions about side effects which Citi and UBS analysts said were expected. THRX will get royalties of 15% on the first $3B in sales and 5% thereafter. 1 Comment [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Friday, April 12, 7:49 AM XenoPort (XNPT) says its restless leg drug Horizant is sold out, and in this case, that's a bad thing. GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), which has commercialization rights to the treatment through the end of this month, reports manufacturing delays have led to a stockout of Horizant. XNPT says it is "evaluating the impact, if any, this will have" on financial expectations. Shares -2.48% premarket. 1 Comment [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Tuesday, April 2, 10:02 AM Optimer Pharmaceuticals (OPTR) surges 18.1% following a report that the antibiotics maker has attracted takeover interest from GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), AstraZeneca (AZN), Cubist Pharmaceuticals (CBST) and Japan's Astellas. Optimer hopes to fetch up to $1B in an auction, well above its market cap of $660M. The company has one drug on the market, Dificid, which is used to treat intestinal infections in hospitalized patients. 1 Comment [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Thursday, March 28, 5:21 PM Bacteria that live in the gut change after gastric-bypass surgery and may aid in weight loss, according to a recent study. Gastric surgery helps people lose weight by shrinking the size of the stomach and making it tougher to absorb calories, now scientists think it may also adjust gastrointestinal bacteria, contributing to weight loss and raising the possibility for less-drastic obesity treatment. 7 Comments [Healthcare]
