- Monday, April 1, 2:00 PM Disappointing Q4 results from Daqo (DQ -9.8%), together with a general decline in risk assets, fuels a rout in solar names. YGE -7.9%. SOL -7.3%. JKS -5.4%. GTAT -4.1%. CSIQ -4.9%. SPWR -2.8%. WFR -2.5%. Daqo's Q4 revenue of $6.2M represented a 77% Y/Y drop, and was well below the $14.5M forecast by the one analyst providing estimates. Gross margin was -178.5% (no typo), a little worse than Q3's -51.1%. Polysilicon output is expected to total 720 MT in Q1, up from Q4's 592 MT. Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Thursday, March 28, 2:12 PM GT Advanced (GTAT +10.7%) shoots higher after signing a deal to sell more polysilicon manufacturing equipment to Taiwan's Powertec. Powertec, which has already bought equipment from GT that's good for making 6K metric tons/year (MTA), plans to eventually boost its capacity to 27.5K MTA. Orders related to the new deal are expected to start in 2H14. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]

Midday top 10 gainers: PTEK +30%. BVX +23%. OPXA +20%. LEDS +20%. IBCP +13%. DXYN +11%. GTAT +11%. APP +11%. HGSH +9%. PGNX +9%.
Midday top 10 losers: ZIOP -62%. FUQI -17%. GMAN -16%. PGTI -14%. STSI -13%. GMXR -11%. STXS -11%. PRTS -10%. REED -10%. CSUN -8%. Comment! [On the Move] - Thursday, March 21, 6:37 PM Sapphire glass will find its way into smartphone displays, GT Advanced (GTAT) insists. Sapphire, used in the iPhone 5's camera lens, is thinner and ~3x stronger/scratch-resistant than Gorilla Glass (GLW). But a sapphire display costs ~$30, whereas a Gorilla Glass display costs less than $3. GT is hoping its furnaces, which can be upgraded to support larger crystals at little cost, will narrow the gap to 3x-4x. Industry analyst Eric Virey, who thinks sapphire's cost could fall below $20 in a couple years, expects "some high-end smartphones using sapphire in 2013." (previous) 17 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, March 5, 9:42 AM Cree (CREE +11.4%) raises its FQ3 guidance: the company now expects revenue of $335M-$350M and EPS of $0.31-$0.36 vs. prior guidance of $325M-$345M and $0.30-$0.35, and a consensus of $336.1M and $0.33. Cree is also announcing new, aggressively-priced LED bulbs: Home Depot will sell a 40W-replacement bulb for $9.97, and 60W-replacements for $12.97 and $13.97. Shares are making new 52-week highs. Up in sympathy: RBCN +3%. AIXG +3.5%. GTAT +6%. VECO +5.5%. (PR) Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]
- Thursday, February 28, 5:18 PM While peers Aixtron and Veeco rallied thanks to Aixtron's Q4 report, GT Advanced (GTAT -6.5%) hit multi-year lows after missing Q4 EPS estimates. 2013 guidance is broad: revenue of $500M-$600M and EPS of $0.25-$0.45 vs. a consensus of $538.1M and $0.30. Backlog fell to $1.25B from Q3's $1.5B, and new orders amounted to just $6.5M vs. $49.2M in Q3. A credit facility has been restructured so as to waive financial obligations through 2H14. In return, GTAT agrees to pay down $40M, decrease its revolver facility by $50M, and agree to minimum liquidity/EBITDA levels. (transcript) Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]
- Wednesday, February 27, 5:52 PM GT Advanced Technologies (GTAT): Q4 EPS of -$0.15 misses by $0.07. Revenue of $102.3M. (PR) 2 Comments [Earnings, Breaking News, Tech]
- Wednesday, February 27, 11:40 AM Unsurprisingly, solar stocks are giving back some of their big 2013 gains (TAN -3.7%) in response to First Solar's (FSLR -16.1%) Q4 results and guidance. LDK -9.6%. SCTY -7.7%. SPWR -6.2%. YGE -6%. TSL -4.5%. JASO -4.4%. GTAT -2.9%. Piper and Baird have joined BofA in downgrading FSLR. On the earnings call, management said it's targeting a 2013 book-to-bill of at least 1 (it was 0.8 in 2012), but cautioned it expects 2H results to be weaker than 1H results due to upcoming project completions and a greater mix of module sales. 4 Comments [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]
- Wednesday, February 20, 4:55 PM Rubicon (RBCN) has resumed trading and is down 17.7% in response to the ugly Q1 guidance accompanying its slight Q4 miss. LED equipment makers GTAT and AIXG could trade lower in sympathy, particularly in light of Rubicon's comments about excess inventory at a top LED client and very weak pricing for 2"-4" wafers. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]

- Thursday, February 14, 2:49 PM Even on a very good day for solar stocks (TAN +3.9%), the huge gains posted by SunPower (SPWR +23.3%) are eye-opening. No news has hit the wires to explain the move, but with 16.9% of the float shorted as of Jan. 31, short-covering could be playing a big role. Solar stocks had already rallied strongly on Monday and Tuesday thanks to growing optimism about an industry bottom. LDK +8.7%. DQ +12.6%. FSLR +7.6%. JASO +5.8%. ENPH +14.3%. WFR +5%. GTAT +5%. 3 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, February 12, 11:37 AM Another day, another big rally for heavily-shorted solar stocks (TAN +3%). Hopes are growing the beleaguered industry might finally be bottoming: Credit Suisse's Satya Kumar is encouraged by flattening polysilicon and module pricing, and thinks U.S. and Chinese solar initiatives could drive growth. However, he adds "excess panel capacity in China needs to be permanently retired." LDK +9.3%. SCTY +8.3%. GTAT +5.1%. DQ +7.2%. SOL +7.9%. JKS +6.5%. FSLR +2.9%. - Thursday, January 17, 9:58 AM GT Advanced (GTAT +7%) pops after Jefferies declares the bad news priced in and upgrades shares to Hold. While cutting estimates on GT and arguing there's additional backlog risk, the firm also notes shares trade roughly at book value, and it sees orders for sapphire LED and solar polysilicon manufacturing equipment potentially acting as 2H and 2014 catalysts (though it wants to see more visibility). 30.3% of the float was shorted as of Dec. 31.
