Gushan Environmental Energy: The Case for Chinese Biofuel [view article]
GU - is it as simple as this: oil is going through the roof, the Chinese government has mandated alternative fuel use, GU is roughly doubling manufacturing capacity by year's end, it has a PEG of .31, forward PE of 10, no debt, a current ratio of 11, ROE @15%, and a PM of 23%. Why should this stock not go very much higher? Reply

Gushan Environmental Energy: The Case for Chinese Biofuel [view article]
Dan, In response to the breakout... it seemed to be timed exactly in response to a press release that 65 Gushan employees and officers were getting over 1.5 million ADR options to vest a third a year for the next three years at US$10.60. The gain had a fundamental basis, but its magnitude might have been technical.

The fundamental being that they have good management and they are enticing them to stay and conquer the market.

The technical... I know that Market Technicians are capable of producing gains aside from the underlying businesses they are investing in, but I am not one and the word has too many meanings for me. For the sake of simplicity I would replace it with popular or increased demand for ownership in this situation... unless you are referring to something else like one of the volume/financial stat functions that most quote sites offer. If that is the case, I am curious to know what measurement you think was the underlying influence on the gain.

Thanks for your comment though. Shortly after I wrote this article I went long GU, and I nervously watched the price drop more than 10%. "Cat's eye's" comment was quite alarming and made me reluctant to continue writing because it didn't seem like I had a reader. Instead I concentrated on my own analysis more.

I am still in GU now, indefinitely, but I am looking to be compensated more for the risk I assumed when I picked it up. The price has been pretty unstable at the current level and if it had more time to follow it I would probably approach the situation differently and try to take advantage of the huge movements.

These reports are moments in history that I will have to tell my grandchildren. I remember when solar only gained 2% or the quarter..yes...granpa we know. But still it will be hard for them to believe it. Reply

nice call on GU: stock is up 75% in a matter of weeks. Looks like the run is more technically driven than anything fundamental, but nevertheless there is some takeover noise making the rounds at some desks we got in touch with.

Will look for GU entry and hope the run is on pause and that we don't see an exhaustion gap anytime soon.

Nice call Daniel, cat's eye got it all wrong. GU has doubled in the last 2 weeks, basically. Keep up good work. Looks like a technical breakout, rather than something fundamental, but we are hearing vague chatter about a takeout. Reply

Cameron, Thank you for a very informative analysis of these three stocks. I purchased GU at $9 and took a lot of heat from the "peanut gallery" but surprisingly the good news keeps flowing and the price keeps rising. I was considering cashing out on Monday but with 60% earning growth will hang in longer. Just may pick up WEL too- that was also on the radar but I opted for RIO.

The Week in Sustainable Energy Stocks (Week Ending 3/7) [view article]
We track 13 geothermal stocks including all the names you mentioned. We include Calpine in the geothermal search but we don't consider it to be a sustainable energy company - the last time I looked it had 25,000 MW of gas fired combined cycle generation and about 1,000 MW of geothermal. Two of the companies, Ormat and Geodynamics, are included in our Renewable Electricity index. Reply

Why don't you track the 5 or 6 geothermal stock?. The new Calpine(just out of bankruptcy) has the largest geothermal assets in North America The others: Nevada Geothermal, Western Geopower, Polaris Geothermal, U.S. Geothermal and Sierra Geothermal are all small cap almost penny stocks. They will be producing electricty very soon. Reply

Five Oil and Alternative Energy Developments to Watch [view article]
Strobe, I'm thinking not for a while. I don't see any real competitive advantage, and they've consistently diluted their shareholders because they haven't made money for so long. The cash that they raised is now falling in real value due to inflation. And the telecom equipment sector continues to consolidate, and that hurts the component vendors. What's to like about the stock to make me cover? Not a lot.

Willtom, that's really fascinating. Can you provide any more details and tell us about what you do?
