"Funny, how some people bemoan the fact we only pay $4.00/gallon or so for gas while in China they pay even less."What's our per capita GDP, ten times theirs? Reply

Yeah, and aren't the Chinese/Cubans drilling the Eastern Gulf of Mexico right NOW... ? ReplyEnergy Bombshell: China Raises Oil and Diesel Prices [view article]
Agree that every step the Chinese government makes in the direction of free markets is cause for cheer. Interesting, isn't it, that certain Democratic senators want the US to go in the opposite direction by taking over domestic oil refineries in a quixotic effort to force down gasoline prices.GU does look interesting, though I'd like to see more evidence of basing before getting involved. Every analyst I read who claims we are in the middle of a speculative oil bubble in no way denies what the long term trend is.It is a bombshell. There was the usual griping at $3.00 per gallon over here but GM kept all of its light/consumer truck plants cranking out Suburbans & Tahoes.
Now the Chinese consumer has to pay more realistic prices they will be more conscious of their gas consumption. Funny, how some people bemoan the fact we only pay $4.00/gallon or so for gas while in China they pay even less. Reply

Measured by weight because that is how refiners blend mixtures and additives; it also avoids density issues due to varying temperatures. ReplyChina Clean Energy, Gushan: Very Different Animals in China's Biodiesel Space [view article]
if you listened to the conference call, you would have heard that they have proprietary technology that allows them to use a lower grade of grease, thereby cheaper.also they state that they have scale, which gives them leverage in negotiating prices. Reply

I feel the two best alt energy ETF's are GEX & PBW. You can hold both & gain quite excellent diversification. Here's why:GEX: Larger caps, Global (EU & Asia mostly) exposure, Older companies
PBW: Smaller caps, More US focused co's, Younger companies
So, GEX is a "safer" investment, while PBW will have more volatility. Combine the two & you get a little bit of cross over (mostly Chinese Solar co's) with better diversification.

Hey Aquaculture - I believe you mean ground sourced heat pumps not geothermal. Speaking as a geologist, geothermal is hot water gysers etc. Ground sourced heat pumps use the stable temperature of the earth as a heat source (winter) or sink (summer) for a heat pump. U.S. geothermal industry experiencing "dramatic growth surge" with expectations that total power production (currently 3 million homes) could triple over the next few years.GEA together with Ormat (NYSE:ORA) and Glitnir bank will host a workshop on july 23, 2008 in NYC to introduce geothermal energy to the NYC financial community.
Among the present: Google.
Google has announced that geothermal energy will be one of their focus areas for new investment. Reply

Actually, I take that back. PZD is diversified way beyond alternative energy so it's not a pure-play energy ETF. It's a good ETF, but it's not a good direct comparison to PBW. QCLN is a good comp to PBW, but it's no better, in fact, its worse. I'd have to stick with GEX as a better direct comp. ReplyPowerShares WilderHill Clean Energy ETF (PBW) Holdings [view article]
This ETF is a nice short-term investment, but the strategy for long-term sucks. There's no investment merit here and the risk-adjusted return is poor. If you have to pick so many companies in the same sector then you get too many losers. Seems like there's a lot of stocks here that have little to do with altnernative energy, are in bio-fuels from food crops, or just plain lousy companies. I'd have to agree, that GEX, or PZD, or even the new solar ETFs (for trading) blow this puppy out of the water. ReplyPowerShares WilderHill Clean Energy ETF (PBW) Holdings [view article]
Hey everyoneI have tracked PBW the last six months and currently own a call spread on it. This ETF does exactly what I think the ETF philosophy should be: be balanced. PBD is also good for the global exposure. Long term this is a nice ETF to own. Reply

Gushan is in flaud. If you talk with any provider of used cooking oil, they would quote you more than 4000 RMB per ton. But GU claimed their cost is less than 2300 RMB per ton. Their Beijing factory started partial production since middle of April. But they claimed to start production in January. Reply
