"Challenges" remain, says Moody's, notably, short-term financing risks for a country with a balance of payments deficit - much of it structural - of more than 7% of GDP. Monday, November 5, 2012, 9:33 AM Turkey is upped to a BB+ from BBB- at Fitch, giving the country its first investment-grade rating since 1994. The economy appears on track for the mythical "soft landing," with growth slowing just enough to bring down what was once a rather large current account deficit. Tuesday, January 24, 2012, 8:29 AM Eurozone finmins take the next step towards financial sanctions on Hungary, endorsing the EC view that the country only achieved a deficit/GDP ratio below 3% with a series of one-off measures. The EC can now withhold up to 100% of EU "cohesion funds" from Hungary, but will give Budapest until year's end to alter its course. Comment! [Global & FX]
Tuesday, January 24, 2012, 2:32 AM Hungary's central bank meets later today and is expected to raise what is already the EU's highest benchmark interest rate. This sets in motion the next stage of the Excessive Debt Procedure at which the country could be shut out of the EU cohesion fund. Friday, January 6, 2012, 8:10 AM Hungarian bonds and the forint are rallying back from crisis levels as PM Orban says it's in the country's interest to get assistance from the IMF and pledges to cooperate with the central bank. Wednesday, January 4, 2012, 7:10 AM The forint falls to an all-time low vs. the euro as a EU/IMF rescue package for Hungary looks unlikely before the second half of the year. Talks recently broke off as the government moved forward with a new law stifling central bank independence. Friday, December 30, 2011, 9:19 AM Poland's central bank is rumored to have intervened in the foreign exchange markets to prop up the zloty for the 2nd straight day (the bank has confirmed it intervened on Thursday).
