- Monday, May 13, 3:52 PM Genesee & Wyoming (GWR -0.7%) says consolidated traffic rose 7.3% in April Y/Y, aided by higher shipments of petroleum products, metallic ores and lumber. Consolidated traffic rose to 157,695 carloads from 146,947 over the same period, while same-railroad carloads rose 5.6%. Metallic ores and petroleum product carloads rose 30% and 70%, respectively, while lumber and forest products carloads were up 18%. But coal and coke carloads, its largest segment, fell 3.4%, with an even sharper decline was in agricultural products, which were down 8%. Comment! [On the Move, Commodities]
- Wednesday, May 1, 6:13 AM Genesee & Wyoming (GWR): Q1 EPS of $0.87 misses by $0.02. Revenue of $375.2M (+80.9% Y/Y) misses by $8.97M. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News]

- Thursday, April 11, 8:40 AM Genesee & Wyoming (GWR) reports traffic in March doubled Y/Y to 154,077 carloads including the extra volume from RailAmerica. The biggest gain by cargo was petroleum products, up 39.9% to 8,619 carloads during the month. Comment! [Consumer]
- Wednesday, March 27, 2:29 PM Are railroad stocks (KSU, UNP, NSC, GWR, PWX, CNI, BNI) ready to stay on track to see even higher levels? Despite valuations that are getting stretched after a broad sector rally, a compelling case can be made that shares will keep motoring higher. The industry will pour $14B into improvements this year and freight demand is forecast to soar 50% by 2050. The stat that makes the bull case all by itself: Trains can move a ton of freight about 500 miles on one gallon of fuel - an efficiency rate 3X or 4X better than trucks. 9 Comments [Consumer, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, February 27, 10:12 AM Railroad stocks move higher after a report on durable goods comes in better than expected with Kansas City Southern (KSU +6.4%) leading the pack. Advancers: UNP +2.0%, GWR +2.2%, CNI +1.6%, UNP +2.1%. 2 Comments [Consumer, On the Move]
- Tuesday, February 12, 6:04 PM Genesee & Wyoming (GWR): Q4 EPS of $0.79 misses by $0.01. Revenue of $227.3M (+8% Y/Y) beats by $4.47M. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News]
- Tuesday, January 22, 3:30 PM Commercial shipping traffic on the Mississippi River was halted at Granite City, Illinois after a vessel struck one of the Army Corp of Engineers locks on the river. The low level of several rivers in the Midwest has helped stoke up extra demand for railroad carriers as an alternative for transport. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Tuesday, January 15, 7:19 AM Genesee & Wyoming (GWR) reports December traffic fell 9.1% Y/Y to 74.5K carloads, while its RailAmerica unit saw carloads fall 4.7% to 67,562 for the month. A good portion of the drop can be attributed to weak demand for coal & coke transport. Comment! [Consumer]
- Wednesday, January 9, 10:58 AM Railroad companies could see more demand with more reports now out that the low level of the Mississippi River will limit the ability of barges to run up and down the river. The biggest danger is that a 200-mile stretch of the mighty river between St. Louis, Missouri and Cairo, Illinois could be effectively closed. Waiting in the wings: CSX, RA, CNI, PWX, GWR, CP, NSC, KSU, UNP. 1 Comment [Consumer, Quick Ideas]
- Monday, November 5, 2012, 6:06 AM Genesee & Wyoming (GWR): Q3 EPS of $0.74 beats by $0.05. Revenue of $222M (+2.5% Y/Y) beats by $3M. (PR) Comment! [Earnings]
- Wednesday, October 24, 2012, 11:23 AM Shares of Norfolk Southern (NSC -7.1%) trade lower after the company warns it sees a coal slump extending well into 2013. Other railroad stocks are also getting hit on the news. CSX -2.6%, UNP -1.1%, GWR -1.2%. 4 Comments [Consumer, On the Move]
- Tuesday, September 25, 2012, 6:06 PM Some more S&P MidCap 400 changes: InterDigital (IDCC) will replace Quest Software (QSFT) as of the Sep. 28 close, and Genesee & Wyoming (GWR) will replace Collective Brands (PSS) as of the Oct. 1 close. Quest shareholders just approved the company's $28/share acquisition by Dell. IDCC +3.2% AH. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Consumer]
- Wednesday, September 12, 2012, 5:28 PM Genesee & Wyoming (GWR) -4.4% AH after announcing a public offering of 3.5M common shares and 2M tangible equity units through Bank of America, Citi and JPMorgan. GWR intends to use the net proceeds to partially fund its acquisition of RailAmerica or for general corporate purposes. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Monday, August 13, 2012, 8:56 AM Genesee & Wyoming (GWR) reports July rail carloads off 5.1% Y/Y. Excluding acquisitons, same-railroad traffic fell 8.5% Y/Y. The company is also a significant operator in Australia and has benefitted from the China-led materials boom. In Oz, carloads fell 1.9% Y/Y. (PR) Comment! [U.S. Economy, Global & FX]
