- Wednesday, April 10, 12:53 PM U.S. companies paid out an additional $14.5B in dividends on common stock in Q1 as more companies increased their payouts, S&P Dow Jones Indices reports, even as payout rates remain at a historically low 36%. The quarter saw 944 dividend increases, a 39.4% gain Y/Y. By percentage, some of the biggest dividend hikes came from F, WYNN, QCOM, HAL and HD. Comment! [U.S. Economy]
- Wednesday, March 27, 2:48 PM For investors interested in oilfield services companies, Simmons analysts provide their share-price entry points for the sector's top names - SLB, HAL, BHI, WFT, CAM, FTI, NOV - and finds all look fairly valued with 2013 likely to be a murky year. But "most of these names are good solid buys on weakness," the firm says, and that’s where the entry points help. Comment! [Energy, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, March 27, 11:49 AM UBS ups its price target for Buy-rated Halliburton (HAL +0.5%) to $53 from $48 on higher 2014 EPS estimates but thinks the stock will continue to tread water until as late as H2 2013. The firm says Q1 North American pricing is soft but should stabilize in Q2 and into H2, as price declines have not been widespread and are not escalating; frac pricing has generally stabilized for term contracts. Comment! [Energy, Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, March 21, 1:52 PM Independent E&P Dejour Energy (DEJ) says it's on schedule to begin a new drilling program at its 72% owned and operated Kokopelli project in Colorado. The company has inked an agreement with Halliburton (HAL) to complete the wells once the program ends. Dejour's COO said these developments show the company is "beginning the process of converting the Kokopelli asset from a proven undeveloped and probable reserve to a proven developed producing reserve that [will only] grow with time." Comment! [Energy]
- Thursday, March 21, 9:38 AM Goldman Sachs believes the selloff in oil service stocks creates a buying opportunity, as it sees Q1 earnings growing at a faster rate driven by completion work. The firm expects Halliburton (HAL) to report in-line Q1 results and recommends buying on the recent pullback, suggests Basic Energy (BAS) on better utilization, and likes Nabors Industries (NBR) on relative valuation. 9 Comments [Energy, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, March 20, 3:32 PM Drillers are little more than range-bound trading vehicles for now, Dan Dicker says in urging investors to avoid the group. Despite excitement over new U.S. finds, the weak price of natural gas will continue to stifle drilling growth until some price recovery past $3.50/mcf arrives. SLB and others have done a good job squeezing growth from international markets, but a robust U.S. market is key for their stocks to take off. 4 Comments [Energy, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, March 19, 3:19 PM Despite Schlumberger's near-term concerns, Credit Suisse is convinced the U.S. rig count is going higher and thinks investors should be overweight in U.S.-focused companies leveraged to the rig count or completions. CS likes manufacturers HAL, SPN and FET that supply equipment for drilling and producing the tight reservoirs, plus BHI, WFT, NOV and FTI. 1 Comment [Energy, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, March 19, 10:29 AM Oilfield services companies suffer another down day after Schlumberger (SLB -1.3%) sounded an alarm for the sector, warning that customers have reactivated fewer rigs than expected and pricing is still an issue. It was a “clarion call of realism," Simmons says, virtually ensuring negative Q1 guidance from SLB and making positive revisions from other oil service firms "a steeper climb." HAL -1.9%, BHI -1.3%. 1 Comment [Energy, On the Move]
- Monday, March 18, 10:23 AM Schlumberger (SLB -2.4%) warns that North American activity is coming in weaker than expected in Q1, with fewer rigs going back to work. Asset utilization has recovered from a holiday slowdown and lower cost for guar, a key ingredient used in fracking, is providing some relief, but pricing remains the fundamental issue, CEO Paul Kibsgaard tells an energy conference. HAL -1.5%, BHI -2%, WFT -1.9%. Comment! [Energy, On the Move]
- Monday, March 18, 8:59 AM Halliburton (HAL) signs a strategic partnership that could see it earn up to a 25% stake in three Polish concessions. London-listed San Leon Energy (SLGYF.PK) would continue as manager and operator of the concessions, while HAL would perform and fund fracturing tests for the Siciny-2 well in Q2 2013. Comment! [Energy, Global & FX]
- Tuesday, March 12, 11:22 AM A Halliburton (HAL) executive testified yesterday he was aware of some irregularities in HAL's testing of its cement that was used to seal BP's Macondo well, the Times-Picayune reported. A lawyer for plaintiffs in the case said HAL had discarded several "off the record" tests of the cement, the newspaper added. 1 Comment [Energy]
- Monday, March 11, 6:05 PM A closer look at China’s plans to unlock what could be the world’s biggest shale gas reserves shows shows 16 firms winning exploration rights in the latest auction had never drilled a gas well before. They have little idea about the costs, but they're "getting in early into what could be a huge market." It also offers the potential for lucrative contracts for specialist foreign firms such as SLB or HAL. 2 Comments [Energy, Global & FX]
- Tuesday, February 26, 2:49 AM Talks between BP (BP) and states to settle the latter's claims over the Gulf oil spill are reportedly being made more difficult by the competing interests of the sates. At the opening of the civil trial yesterday, the Justice Department's Michael Underhill accused BP of "willful misconduct," which is an even higher standard than gross negligence and would leave BP open to fines of up to $17.6B. Underhill accused Haliburton (HAL) and Transocean (RIG) of gross negligence. 7 Comments [Energy, Top Stories]
- Friday, February 22, 5:35 PM UBS expects Halliburton's (HAL) dividend hike - its first since 2007 - could lead other oilfield companies to follow suit later this year, particularly Ensco (ESV), which now pays $1.50/share but could raise it to $2 or $2.50. Schlumberger (SLB), which increased dividends last month by 14%, also will seek to regularly raise its dividend in coming years as free cash flows grow, the firm says. 1 Comment [Energy]
- Thursday, February 21, 11:49 AM Halliburton (HAL -2.7%) shares move lower, along with most energy issues today, despite a 39% hike in the quarterly dividend to $0.125/share. HAL says it plans to distribute total annual dividends of at least 15%-20% of its net income, "nicely above the range of the preceding two years and generally above the historical range," and a potential ~35% dividend hike next year, Simmons analysts say. 1 Comment [Energy, On the Move]
- Wednesday, February 20, 6:23 PM Halliburton Company (HAL): declares $0.125/share quarterly dividend, 39% increase from prior dividend of $0.09. Forward yield 1.20%. For shareholders of record Mar. 06. Payable Mar. 27. Ex-div date Mar. 04. (PR) Comment! [Dividends]
