    Market recap: Stocks weakened after several health-care companies cut guidance, but strong earnings from Apple (AAPL +6.0%) and Boeing (BA +3.9%) provided support, leading indexes to a mixed close. Advancers slightly outnumbered decliners on the NYSE. Huntington Bancshares (HBAN +13.0%) led a strong showing for regional banks.

    UBS downgrades four regional banks to Sell - Huntington Bancshares (HBAN -5.0%), KeyCorp (KEY -3.0%), Regions (RF -3.1%) and TCF Financial (TCB -3.5%) - calling the group’s valuations “unsustainable" and expecting a “meaningful pullback” in the stocks. (ETF: RKH)

    Market recap: Stocks closed mixed, failing to hold gains after release of minutes from the FOMC's March meeting. The NYSE advance/decline ratio finished nearly even. Among individual stocks, the two top percentage gainers on the S&P were Marshall & Ilsley (MI +5.8%) and Huntington Bancshares (HBAN +5.6%). The biggest loser was Massey Energy (MEE -11.6%).

    With Barclays (BCS) on the prowl for U.S. retail assets, regional banks are riding higher today: Zions Bancorp. (ZION) up 4.9%; Regions Financial (RF) up 4.9%; Huntington Bancshares (HBAN) up 2.8%. The three were up 5-8% at the markets' intraday highs earlier.

    While NYSE short interest rose 3.8%, Nasdaq short interest increased 4.8% in the first half of the month, with short positions increasing most for Cisco (CSCO), Oracle (ORCL), Huntington Bancshares (HBAN) and Sirius XM (SIRI).

    Seven of the 10 worst S&P 500 performers this year were banks weighed down by real estate loan defaults that may extend their declines into next year - including worst performer Marshall & Ilsley (MI), down 60%; Huntington Bancshares (HBAN), down 52%; Citigroup (C), down 51%; and Zions Bancorporation (ZION), down 48%.

    Investors are beginning to look beyond banks' loan losses and focusing on how things might shake out after the crisis. "Nobody asked us about 2009 earnings," Huntington Bancshares (HBAN) CEO Stephen Steinour commented after HBAN's Q3 earnings call. "Frankly, they want to know what 2011 looks like."
