- Wednesday, November 7, 2012, 1:35 PM Shares of major hospital companies jump today as fears are allayed over a Mitt Romney administration that would undo Obamacare. The repeal of Obamacare would have meant that hospitals would have to put a large share of "bad debt" back on their books in order to pay for indigent patients' emergency care. HCA Holdings (HCA +9.5%), Tenet Healthcare (THC +10%), Health Management Associates (HMA +8.2%) and Community Health Systems (CYH +7%). 2 Comments [Healthcare, On the Move, U.S. Economy]

- Friday, September 21, 2012, 11:16 AM Competition for emergency room care is heating up for Health Care Associates (HCA), as California-based Kaiser Permanente completes construction on four of five “multi-specialty centers” in the Washington area that will compete with hospitals for ER business. Kaiser's move is part of a larger effort to shift toward stand-alone medical centers that are less expensive for patients and insurers than ERs, which is a worrisome development for hospital operators like HCA, who rely on emergency room income from privately insured patients to help make ends meet. Comment! [Healthcare]
- Tuesday, August 14, 2012, 5:23 PM Stephen Mandel's Lone Pine Capital takes up new positions: Cooper Cos. (COO), Walt Disney (DIS), eBay (EBAY), Google (GOOG), HCA Holdings (HCA), Kohls (KSS), Liberty Global (LBTYA), Monsanto (MON), News Corp, (NWSA), Qualcomm (QCOM). Comment! [Tech, Commodities, Healthcare]
- Tuesday, August 14, 2012, 1:14 PM Investors appear to be shrugging off a second New York Times story published today on HCA (HCA +0.8%). The article centers around HCA's aggressive billing for services and emergency room management practices, which, due to pressure to focus on profits, have at times caused conflict with its doctors and nurses. The model has been hugely profitable for its three private equity partners - who've more than tripled their initial investment since 2006 when they invested $33B into the troubled company - and created a frenzy among other private equity firms buying up similar firms attempting to cash in on the new model. Comment! [Healthcare]
- Monday, August 13, 2012, 10:26 AM HCA Holdings (HCA -0.1%) says a second story about the company may soon be published by the New York Times, covering several topics that did not appear in the first story. Last week the company disclosed the newspaper had published an article questioning its cardiology practices in Florida, and it had been contacted by the U.S. Attorney's office over the matter. Among the new topics are questions about reimbursement guidelines and the process the company uses to determine the status of emergency care. Comment! [Healthcare]
- Tuesday, August 7, 2012, 12:55 PM HCA Holdings (HCA +5%) snaps back from yesterdays pummeling on a negative New York Times article regarding its practices in Florida, as a number of firms come to its defense. Jefferies thinks concerns over the issue will subside, and the stock will eventually move higher on its strong fundamentals and solid income potential. Baird agrees, saying that sellers have overreacted and the company's balance sheet remains strong. Comment!
- Monday, August 6, 2012, 3:46 PM Hospital stocks recover some, but not all, of today's losses on the back of Health Care Associates' (HCA -4.3%) earlier drubbing: Health Management (HMA -0.8%), Tenet (THC -1%) and Community Health (CYH -0.8%). Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Monday, August 6, 2012, 11:10 AM HCA Holdings (HCA -6%) trades lower despite an overall upbeat Q2 earnings report this morning on the back of a negative story from the New York Times about its cardiology practices Florida, and the disclosure during its conference call that it's been contacted by the U.S. Attorney's office over the matter. Comment! [Healthcare, Earnings, On the Move]
- Monday, August 6, 2012, 7:59 AM More on HCA (HCA) Q2: net income rises to $391M from $229M last year, which was hit by losses of $75M on retirement of debt. Q2 this year boosted by increased patient volume and the consolidation of HCA's HealthONE venture. Affirms 2012 guidance for adjusted EPS of $3.57-$3.77 and revenues of $32-33B vs. consensus of $3.69 and $35.56B Comment! [Earnings, Healthcare]
