    Citigroup sends hospital stocks lower with an in-depth report in which it downgrades eight firms in the sector and provides a gloomy forecast for government health-care spending. THC -2.73%, SUNH -1.03%, LNCR -2.94%, AHS -5.6%, HCA -1.7%, HMA -1.9%, LPNT -1.88%, and UHS -2.75%.

    A program to pre-approve Medicare hospital payments for pacemakers and joint replacements apparently is limited to Florida, contrary to an earlier report that Medicare wouldn’t pay for a range of procedures in 11 states. An expanded version of Florida’s program is unlikely to take effect in an election year, Credit Suisse says (earlier). Bouncing back: THC +11%, HCA +5.9%, CYH +2.3%.

    Barry Rosenstein's Jana Partners makes a big bet on HCA (13F filing) - loading up on 4.1M shares of the hospital operator in Q3. Shares of HCA are mired in an extended slump, down 48% YTD, but gave a slight kick higher on word of Jana's investment.

    Barclays is reiterating an Overweight on HCA, albeit while lowering its PT to $30, after shares rise 12% on the company's stock repurchase deal with BAC. Though noting concerns about the hospital operator's exposure to Medicare rate cuts, Barclays is positive on HCA's ability to improve profitability through cost-cutting efforts.

    Some positive sentiment is washing over hospital stocks today, led by HCA Holdings (HCA) as it rocks a 10.5% gain following a share repurchasement announcement. Tenet Healthcare (THC +5.1%) and Community Health Systems (CYH +3.6%) also move higher, as investors start to move away from takeover chatter and focus on earnings and valuation.

    Hospital operator HCA, which was taken public by its PE owners in March, rises 10.4% after announcing it will repurchase 80.7M shares from Bank of America (BAC). Three BofA-appointed board members will resign following the transaction, which will roughly give the bank a 3x return on its investment, originally made by Merrill Lynch's PE arm.

    Shares of HCA Holdings (HCA -3.6%) fall after the company reported fewer heart procedures in Q2 due to its lower number of physicians on staff. Cowen downgraded shares to Neutral from Outperform, saying government pricing concerns "keeps them on the sidelines."

FY11 and FY12 guidance from management is "reasonable." PT Cuts: CYH $30 from $23, HCA $25 from $36, THC $6 from $8, UHS $46 from $63.

    The prospect of potential Medicare cuts in a debt ceiling deal pressures hospital and managed-care stocks, negating Humana's (HUM -2.3%) solid Q2 results. The deal includes preset cuts that kick in if Congress doesn't adopt sufficient savings in a second wave of deficit reduction. Among hospitals: HCA -7.2%, [[UHS] -8.2%. In managed care, HUM and UNH -3.8% slip.

    Hospital shares are weak in early trading, after HCA's (HCA -14%) disappointing Q2 results serve as a "harbinger of bad things to come" for the sector this quarter, a Jefferies note says. Hospitals continue to struggle, as Americans who lost their jobs and health insurance avoid all but the most urgent medical care. Also: CYH -4.3%, THC -4%, HMA -3.4%.

    HCA (HCA) continues to fall premarket after missing earnings expectations. CEO Richard Bracken says the company "experienced a shift in service mix from more complex surgical cases to less acute medical cases," resulting in lower revenue and earnings growth. Shares -14.4%.
