- Tuesday, June 18, 11:30 AM Hudson City Bancorp (HCBK +2%) pops as M&T Bank (MTB +0.6%) looks to soon be able to move forward with its purchase after agreeing with regulators to beef up its anti-money laundering policies. Comment! [Financials, M&A, On the Move, Breaking News]
- Friday, May 24, 7:11 AM Remember M&T Bank's (MTB) proposed purchase of Hudson City Bancorp (HCBK)? Regulators have put the merger on ice and it's sending a chill through the executive suites of other regional banks (KRE) who were considering doing deals, but now figure it's not worth the regulatory scrutiny. In the past, conditions such as we're in - slow economy, weak loan growth - have prompted waves of bank mergers (it's happening in community banks). "I am not buying another bank for as long as I can see," sees one unnamed top executive. Comment! [Financials, M&A]
- Friday, April 12, 9:29 AM M&T Bank (MTB) and Hudson City Bancorp (HCBK) both tumble about 4.5% as they have been unable to gain regulatory approval for their merger. "The timeframe for closing the transaction will be extended substantially beyond the date previously expected." The date for terminating the agreement is moved from August 27 to January 31, 2014. (PR) Comment! [Financials, M&A, On the Move]
- Thursday, October 25, 2012, 1:24 PM Wanting to secure long-term financing for its GE Capital unit, GE reportedly made a play for Hudson City Bancorp (HCBK) before the lender fell into the arms of M&T Bank (MTB). Previously (and maybe still) a bank dressed up in an industrial firm's clothes, GE's reliance on short-term funding nearly brought the enterprise to ruin in 2008. Comment! [Financials, M&A]
- Monday, August 27, 2012, 9:49 AM More on the M&T/Hudson City deal: There isn't much action in other regional bank shares as M&T (MTB +4.8%) - by the market's verdict - picks itself up a steal, buying Hudson City (HCBK +16.2%) at about 80% of tangible book value. Hudson City finds itself in this vulnerable position by recent costly balance sheet restructurings and continuing barely-visible net interest margins. 3 Comments [Financials, On the Move, M&A]
- Monday, August 27, 2012, 8:25 AM M&T Bank (MTB) purchases Hudson City Bancorp (HCBK) for $3.7B in an all-stock deal. Each share of Hudson City will be worth 0.08403 shares of M&T. Based on Friday's M&T close, that means $7.22/share for HCBK, a 12.1% premium to its Friday close. (PR) 5 Comments [Financials, M&A]
- Friday, May 25, 2012, 12:33 PM Hudson City Bancorp (HCBK) could fetch a 31% premium to its current price in a sale to an acquirer "that could take substantial liability marks," reckons Stern Agee's Matt Kelley. Continued to be mentioned as a possible bidder is New York Community Bancorp (NYB). 2 Comments [Financials, M&A]
