- Tuesday, December 4, 2012, 9:37 AM Home Depot (HD -0.2%) will add home appliance products from Samsung (SSNLF.PK) to stores, beginning this weekend. Will Best Buy (BBY -0.5%) feel a pinch? Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, November 23, 2012, 6:51 AM Black Friday shopping will be the headline story in retail for the day, but the underlying plot will be the effect online channels have on the total sales hauls. Though various trade groups tag Black Friday weekend shopping to see a 3% to 4% rise this year, online shopping is expected to increase by closer to 15% heading into Cyber Monday. Online has also been where the winners and losers in the sector have been separated with major online forces such as Macy's (M) and Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS) roaring to huge gains - while the likes of J.C. Penney (JCP) and Big Lots (BIG) limp along. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Thursday, November 22, 2012, 8:00 AM It turns out that a sizable chunk of Black Friday one-day-only deals that can't be beat actually can be beat, often at the same store. An analysis finds that out of 500 doorbusters, almost a third had already been sold at lower prices this year. Home Depot (HD), for example, is selling a GE Adora dishwasher for $598, claiming savings of $151. Except that the machine was available for $538 last month. 4 Comments [Consumer]
- Monday, November 19, 2012, 7:06 AM Shares of Home Depot (HD) get a little lift after rival Lowe's reports earnings., moving up 1.2% premarket to $62.75. The buzz on the company as of late is that it will catch more Black Friday business this year than in years past. Comment! [On the Move, Consumer]
- Thursday, November 15, 2012, 5:46 PM The Home Depot, Inc. (HD) declares $0.29/share quarterly dividend, in line with previous. Forward yield 1.89%. For shareholders of record Nov. 29. Payable Dec. 13. Ex-div Nov. 27. (PR) Comment! [Dividends]
- Tuesday, November 13, 2012, 9:33 AM More on Home Depot's (HD) earnings call (previous): 1) Guidance for Q4 doesn't include any positive benefit from Hurricane Sandy with the company unable to accurately project post-storm sales gains or losses. 2) Execs note November sales are trending strong across parts of the country outside of the Northeast including the South and West. 3) On inflation, the company sees lumber pricing staying elevated and copper prices falling back. 4) The housing market is still in "workout period" but will give an "assist" to HD's results instead of acting as a drag. According to internal models, housing turnover continues to improve. (webcast) Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, November 13, 2012, 9:17 AM Heard on Home Depot's (HD) earnings call: 1) Sees same impact from Hurricane Sandy as the company felt from Hurricane Irene with timing of the impact uncertain. 2) On the housing market, execs note credit availability in housing sector is still a major issue but sees a general trend of improvement. 3) Sales gains were broad across categories, although sales in housing materials were a laggard due in part to a tough comparable from last year in lumber. 4) Appliance sales and higher lumber costs helped drive the firm's average ticket price higher. 5) Credit card expenses significantly lower this year with private-label cards contributing positively. HD +2.1% premarket. (webcast) Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, November 13, 2012, 6:56 AM More on Home Depot's (HD) Q3: The company showed broadly better-than-expected results for the quarter with the slow housing recovery as a backdrop. No specific breakdown on the impact of Hurricane Sandy on sales is issued. The company's square footage flat was flat for the period. Pacing its growth, the number of transactions increased 1.7% Y/Y while the average ticket size grew up 2.9% to $54.55 - marking the best growth rate for ticket size in four years. Conference call scheduled for 9:00 AM EST (webcast). Shares of HD -0.4% premarket. (PR) Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Tuesday, November 13, 2012, 6:31 AM More on Home Depot (HD -0.9%) Q3: net profit +1.4% to $947M, helped by recent improvements in the U.S. housing market, but hurt by charge of $165M for closure of seven stores in China. Comparable store sales +4.2% and +4.3% in U.S. Ups FY guidance: expects adjusted EPS, including share buybacks, to rise 23% to $3.03 vs consensus of $2.97. Forecasts revenue to rise 5.2%, which would take it to $74.1B vs consensus of $73.8B. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Consumer]
- Tuesday, November 13, 2012, 6:05 AM Home Depot (HD): Q3 EPS of $0.74 beats by $0.04. Revenue of $18.1B (+4.6% Y/Y) beats by $150M. (PR) 1 Comment [Earnings]

- Monday, November 12, 2012, 1:50 PM Is the market underestimating the boost in sales Lowe's (LOW +2.1%) and Home Depot (HD +0.3%) will see in Q4 as consumers opt to buy more durables instead of discretionary retail purchases with the sweeping impact of Hurricane Sandy changing some buying behavior? Though both stocks trade near 52-week highs, a number of analysts like the home improvement companies as a better play than the hyper-competitive smorgasbord of retails stocks trying to gain an edge over each other in the holiday season price-slashing wars. Comment! [Consumer, Quick Ideas]
- Sunday, November 11, 2012, 2:05 AM A New York judge gave preliminary approval on Friday to Visa's (V) and MasterCard's (MA) proposed $7.25B settlement with retailers over the fixing of swipe fees on credit cards. The authorization came despite the opposition of trade groups and about 1,200 retailers, including Target (TGT), Wal-Mart (WMT), Home Depot (HD) and Saks (SKS). The deal still needs final approval. 3 Comments [Consumer]
- Monday, November 5, 2012, 12:59 PM Home Depot (HD +0.6%) becomes one of the first retailers to add contextual relevance and functional utility to a broad mobile advertising campaign in an effort to drive its store traffic higher. Instead of just splashing display ads in apps, the company will use location services and click to call functions in the hopes of stoking mobile engagement. Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, November 2, 2012, 7:56 AM The recent mix of economic news and retail sales reports sets the table for a holiday retail season that will come in better than original forecasts, according to IHS Global Insight. What to watch: While Hurricane Sandy is only an "interruption" to retailers on a strong growth track and an "excuse" for underperformers, two potential drags on Q4 retail sales could be a fiscal cliff that doesn't get resolved or a national election that is in dispute. 1 Comment [Consumer]
