- Monday, July 2, 2012, 3:22 PM Halcon Resources' (HK -2.3%) planned takeover of GeoResources (GEOI -0.7%) gives traders the chance to reap the biggest arbitrage profit in America, Bloomberg says. While shares of both companies have slumped as oil prices have dropped, traders can still secure an annualized 56% profit by buying GEOI on the bet the deal will close by July 31, the report says. Comment! [Energy, M&A, Quick Ideas]
- Monday, June 25, 2012, 12:39 PM Halcon Resources (HK -4.1%) forecasts 2012 production to more than double, rising to 9K-11K boe/day from 4,121 boe/day last year, thanks to recent acquisitions in liquids-rich shale acreages. HK also expects Q2 production of 3.9K-4K boe/day. 1 Comment [Energy, On the Move]
- Wednesday, June 6, 2012, 10:05 AM Halcon Resources (HK -0.6%) agrees to buy an operated interest in east Texas oil and gas leases for ~$377M. HK plans to pay $222M in cash and issue ~16.5M shares to buy the interest in the assets covering 16,365 net acres. Net daily production runs to ~2,000 boe/day at the leases, which HK believes are prospective in the oil-rich Woodbine formation. Comment! [Energy, M&A]
- Wednesday, April 25, 2012, 8:56 AM Halcon Resources (HK) agrees to acquire GeoResources (GEOI) for $20/share in cash and 1.932 shares of HK common stock for each GEOI share held. The deal represents total consideration of ~$37.97/share. GEOI +21.3%, HK +4.8% premarket. Comment! [Energy, M&A, On the Move]
- Monday, February 13, 2012, 1:18 PM The CNBC effect: Shares of Halcon Resources (HK) jump 7.1% after CEO Floyd Wilson hits the airwaves earlier today touting the firm's prospects. Comment! [Energy, On the Move]
- Wednesday, January 4, 2012, 2:12 PM Marc Gerstein runs oil producers through a fundamentals stock screener to pull out names where growth is being implemented in an "economically responsible manner." Not shying away from volatility plays, he takes on the under-$10 sub-sector on the theory that increased inefficiencies can make fundamental analysis more "potent." Picks: ALJ, WRES, FPP, RAM, TGA. Comment! [Energy, Quick Ideas]

[On the Move] - Thursday, August 25, 2011, 4:58 AM The SEC is asking oil and gas companies to provide information about the fracking process used to obtain natural gas trapped in rocks, which has come under fire due to environmental concerns. The request includes details about the chemicals used and efforts to limit the ecological impact. 3 Comments [Energy]
- Wednesday, August 24, 2011, 5:25 AM Don't expect any share buybacks from BHP Billiton (BHP), CEO Marius Kloppers says on today's earnings call, noting its $12.1B acquisition of Petrohawk Energy (HK) will absorb any extra cash. Rival Rio Tinto (RIO) boosted its buyback to $7B from $5B earlier this month, but Kloppers says BHP is prioritizing volume growth and dividends. Comment! [Earnings, Commodities]
- Wednesday, August 17, 2011, 7:18 PM BHP Billiton (BHP) gets the final stamp of approval on its $12B takeover bid for shale gas company Petrohawk Energy (HK). BHP +1.6%, HK +0.2% AH. Comment! [Commodities, M&A]
- Friday, August 12, 2011, 2:32 PM In spite of many class action lawsuits accusing Petrohawk's (HK) board of not evaluating all options before agreeing to a $12.1B acquisition by BHP Billiton (BHP), the company insists it's unlikely to attract a rival bid. BHP expects to close the acquisition in Q3, and believes Petrohawk will average 10%+ annual production growth for the rest of the decade. Comment! [Energy, M&A, Commodities]
- Wednesday, August 3, 2011, 7:13 AM Petrohawk Energy (HK): Q2 EPS of $0.34 beats by $0.13. Revenue of $595M (+70% Y/Y) beats by $31M. (PR) Comment! [Energy, Breaking News, Earnings]

- Sunday, July 31, 2011, 5:32 AM The SEC has sent subpoenas to energy companies about how they calculate the performance of their shale gas wells. Regulators are concerned firms may be overstating how their wells perform and how much gas can be extracted, and that there are discrepancies in their disclosures. 3 Comments [Energy]
- Friday, July 15, 2011, 5:25 PM In the current low growth, cheap money economy, Jim Jubak thinks it's worth adding an M&A component to your investment portfolio. But how to find winners? He suggests focusing on sectors such as coal and iron mining, where supply (and growth) are hard to find, or chemicals and software games, where there are lots of players with small market shares. Acquisition candidates include ATVI, HK and PXD. 1 Comment [M&A, Quick Ideas]
- Friday, July 15, 2011, 3:42 PM One small energy company benefiting from BHP's acquisition of Petrohawk (HK +62%) today is Crimson Expoloration (CXPO +14%). The company operates in the same onshore Gulf Coast regions as Petrohawk, and is also a player, albeit minor, in the in the enormous Eagle Ford shale oilfields. Comment!
