Health Management Associates (HMA -1.4%) launches a pre-emptive strike on a 60 Minutes story due to air this weekend by holding a conference call and webcast to discuss the story. The report purportedly focuses on emergency room practices at HMA's Carlisle Regional Medical Center in Pennsylvania, for which HMA says the show "wrongly portrays the company in a negative light." Shares of major hospital companies jump today as fears are allayed over a Mitt Romney administration that would undo Obamacare. The repeal of Obamacare would have meant that hospitals would have to put a large share of "bad debt" back on their books in order to pay for indigent patients' emergency care. HCA Holdings (HCA +9.5%), Tenet Healthcare (THC +10%), Health Management Associates (HMA +8.2%) and Community Health Systems (CYH +7%).

More on Health Management Associates (HMA): Q3 misses across the board as its bottom line was hurt by the negative impact of derivative positions as well as other items. The hospital operator also lowered the high end of its per-share earnings estimate by a nickel, now expecting $0.80 to $0.85 per share, and projects a deeper decline in same hospital admissions of 3% to 5%, compared with its prior expectations for a drop of 1% to 3%.
