    athenahealth (ATHN +7.6%) moves up today after winning a deal to replace Quality Systems (QSII -8.1%) as Health Management Associates' (HMA -0.8%) business service provider. Under the deal, ATHN will facilitate more than 1,200 medical groups currently being serviced by QSII. Wells Fargo likes the deal, saying it will significantly improve 'doc add'' numbers for ATHN in the first half of 2013.

    An interesting big-picture read-through from Health Management Associates' (HMA +0.1%) conference call on employment conditions as well as state of the overall economy: "Our outpatient volume continued to grow in the first quarter of 2012 and we believe our inpatient volumes continue to be affected by a challenging economic environment as patients seek to limit time away from the jobs to ensure continue employment."

    Health Management Associates (HMA -0.3%) posted a mixed Q1 result late yesterday, beating on a per share basis but coming up short on revenue. Net earnings fell 32% Y/Y as the hospital operator was hurt by lower in-patient volumes, a negative derivatives impact and higher overall expenses.

    Credit Suisse is recommends taking advantage of recent weakness to buy Health Management (HMA +0.7%). The firm says it's not concerned with recent headlines and believes organic growth estimates will prove conservative. The firm rates the shares at Outperform with a $12 price target.

The firm says it's comfortable with the health care operator's ability to achieve 2012 guidance, noting that it continues to post impressive top and bottom line growth rates.

The update came as the hospital operator reported Q4 and 2011 results; on an adjusted basis, full-year EPS from continuing operations came to $0.86.
