That is the point. They are not scooters. They are impractical and meant for display, like a parade float.Anyone that thinks that people will start buying Harleys to SAVE MONEY is deluded. Expensive gas is just one more reason not to daydream about buying a "hog" and riding across the country. Reply

Tell some 250 pound, blackjacketed, bearded dude who uses a chain for his belt.....that his hog is a cute scooter! ReplyIcahn Trades - Cramer's Mad Money (6/9/08) [view article]

motor scooter play=hog...I dont think so. Although these motorcycles get better mpg than cars, on average, they are not scooters. ReplyGeneral Discussion on HOG
Chris Cross . Good luck with your concept but unfotunatly the word luck is key with something new or differant. Many a people assume that if there idea is a ground breaker your phone will ring off the hook. In reality most won't notice. To market an idea takes a lot of effort then you have the political and economic factor. In your circunstances flow charts' extensive field test and blue prints would be a big plus If your product were in a cast form versus a billet more eyes may look because that is the only way it will be mass produced. If you assume that fuel mileage is the key then the motorcycle market may not be good target. I can't immagine HD in these economic times putting a lot of money into R and D To improve fuel mileage. good luck. ReplyHigh Gas Prices May Help Harley-Davidson: More Evidence [view article]
they do not make Harleys that get as high of gas mileage as my Harley.Yet.
But if the Harley Davidson does not aquire my technology, they may go the way of the dinosaur.
If Harley Davidson would aquire my technology they would corner the market on all motorcycles above a 500cc engine size.
There are impending Greenhouse Gas laws, and Fuel Mileage requirments that will be imposed by California and the US EPA soon.
I do agree with you Mallarde...the everday HOG rider rides for pure enjoyment. Not to save fuel.

Your scenario is not the usual one for commuters, including the mileage you are getting on your Harley. Do they make hybrid Harleys?I really find it interesting that this gas-costs-will-boost-H... argument seems to have benefited the stock. It is a great example how the "experts" can lack an understanding of the market they analyze, leading them to faulty conclusions.
If the vast majority of Harley-miles are recreational, increased gas costs will discourage people from buying a Harley.
I closed out of some of my short position and am using it as a hedge against this nasty market. Wow. My WB shares are killing my portfolio.

At gas prices in the $4.00 a gallon range. My F150 PU gets 17 mpg. I drive 42 miles per day on an average. The cost to drive my truck is $9-$10 dollars each day back and forth to work.My 2007 Dyna Harley with only Chris-Cross cylinder head technology gets a consistant 64 mpg (this is 20% better than HD OEM) at 42 miles round trip, It will cost me $2.62 each day to ride to work.
That is a $6. and change savings per a day. When I ride 2 days a week........that is $48.00 a month savings. x 6 months of riding weather in Colorado......only$288... but hey save your money where you can.

warm weather and higher interest rates coming and there is a fork in the road which way from here? ReplyGeneral Discussion on HOG
Yes, what is the base number that international growth is based upon?Harley moving up with the market. I felt a little uneasy holding a short position. I added a little around $40. Next earnings report will tell the tale. Is domestic market cratering???
I guy in my building rides a Buell. He can't stand it. What a POS! It has the fit and finish of a lawnmower. That is what it is like -- a giant lawnmower. Sounds like one, too. Reply

Percentage of growth. I came off my seat when I saw the percentage growth of HD in the foriegn market. I became very enthusiastic and said now we are talking and all of a sudden my faith emerged. All the gurus have been right. Harley lives on. I love No# but what I need to do is look at the base No# first. ReplyGeneral Discussion on HOG
Don't mean to "hog" the forum, but the Wall Street Journal (I think) mentioned HOG and concerns with gas prices being a possible boost. Anyone that actually rides motorcycles knows that this is pure nonsense.Almost all Harley-driven miles are recreational. I don't think these are great commuter bikes. I think they are more like art pieces to show off on weekends. I commute everyday in heavy traffic on a BMW GS and cannot imagine commuting on anything like a Harley. Reply

Fujimo, you are a bright guy. Just discovered your posts in the "General Discussion" section.I am also a short as you are (I think) and a rider of another brand of motorcycle.
When I watch this management group at Harley, I see a group that is highly focused on wringing as much cash out of their brand as possible. I also think that they play a lot of games with inventory to increase or steady their earnings to please Wall Street. In other words, they seem like a group where all is not as it seems.
I was getting leery of my short position, but think this stock will continue to have problems trading over $40. I do not think their next earnings release will be encouraging.
