FUJIMO, if their new releases are just new bodywork on the same old engine, then aren't they still in a bit of a technology trap? Isn't one of the criticisms I have read here that the V-twin has reached its limits and overheats easily, etc., etc.? The Rocker (same V-twin, right?) does not solve that problem.

I am building my small short position up. (I am poor.) I still believe that their are large macro forces mounting against HOG. U.S. consumers are waking up from their magical mystery tour. Toys that cost a quarter of their annual income are no longer in the offing.

Hi Joseph, that's a good point. We should see one more quarter of dealer inventory draw-downs, followed by an increase in Q4. I'd be interested to re-visit this topic at the end of the year to make a better comparison to the situation at the end of 2003. Reply

Mallarde. Not long. I look at HOG to retrace to the mid 30's. But it is a crap shoot, right.

One point that I believe [ my point of view ] inventory for now may be low but with 09 models coming. Will there be 3-qtr stuffing to get the numbers?

Some where I may have the numbers on full size cruiser sales versas other revenue.

When I mentioned the new line up it was in general reference to the gradual movement to other models over the last few years. The only new models that I can recall being mentioned was the purchase of MV the Bare bones and the Rocker, to me the rocker when mounted with a rider looks like a moving bar stool but how fitting.

Question, Did I see some where that HD'S in house financeing may be extending the number of years of financeing for select customers?

FUJIMO, are you going to go long on HOG? I always suspected you are short HOG stock.

When did they announce a new lineup? In their conference call?

Do we know what proportion their full-size cruiser bike are of their revenue (and I do not mean # of bikes sold).

The greater the proportion of full-size cruiser bike is, the more of a challenge they will have.

Where will the up trend go? 39.00 is close to the resistence level ,calculating in a 50 day moving average. Reply

The author makes a good point about HOG's efforts to reduce dealer inventory. However, there is a significant seasonality to retail sales of Harleys and the second quarter always starts with the highest dealer inventory of the year and the third quarter ends with the lowest dealer inventory of the year. At that point, dealer inventory again builds in advance of the next sales cycle.

By the end of 2008, it is unlikely that dealer inventory will be lower than it was at the end of 2003.

Cudos to HD for diversifying all of their new models Buell 1125, V Rod & MV Agusta.
This is the future for suvival in a world economy, for most riders are motorcyclist not bikers

There will always be a V-45 twin as long as they can make epa[border line with present v-45 models ] standards. But for the Co to be a producer as in the past they have to look at the future. HOG looks much brighter to me with there new lineup.

I get the impression that if they say HERE IS WHO WE ARE! There sheep may become irritated. Reply Report abuse

Why is that when I hear HD talk I assume that I'am listening to the Treasury 'SECRETery' Henry Paulson stammer and stutter. Reply

David, thanks for posting that link. It was indeed an interesting read. Although I can see the prestige value of a Harley in India and elsewhere, I doubt India will ever be a significant market for HOG. My guess is that Harley will always have a certain cache, both in the US and elsewhere, the real issue, as I see it, is whether the current stock price is sustainable. I think not, expensive gas consuming toys are all going to be under pressure for the near future. That includes, RVs, SUVs, Boats, and Harleys. Reply

Early every Sunday morning the Harley dealership down the road has maybe a dozen people in helmets in the parking lot. They appear to be taking riding lessons. Reply

I think of the Harley business in terms of my memories of it from the 60s and 70s, when, in fact, it is much larger, more conservative and "big business" than I could have imagined.

I looked into buying a Harley Franchise - as it seemed to embody everything I longed for from my youth, and looked like a job I'd enjoy getting up in the morning for . . .

Not to happen. They have gotten too big, too corporate and highly profit driven. Not that that is a bad thing . . . it just doesn't encourage independent franchise owners . . . .

I do have the stock, (which I believe in even more now!) and am considering my first bike at 56.

Women on Harleys has become a good niche for them . . .

If you can afford a HOG $5 gas wouldn't bother you! In fact, you can justify your purchase with gas savings. Reply

I have a Vespa and I can't afford to ride that. It needs new tires and it does run on gasoline which I need to cut my weeded lawn very infrequently! Reply

    ronh,

although Europe's auto business is showing weakness, moto's are a way of life over there. Have you ever hit any of the cities in Italy? People willing to shell out premiums for a Harley, will distinguish themselves from the Piaggio loving public over there. The same goes for India, where it's all about dinky Hero Honda bikes. I asked a fellow coworker when I was there last year if he would ride a Harley around the streets of Mumbai... "fantastic" is the word he used. Affording one is a different story, but in time things should look good for Harley in emerging markets.

There is a good story the Chicago Tribune ran about Hog's versus Royal Enfields in India. An interesting read.
