    • A sharp drop in corn prices could filter down to help give a little lift to the bottom lines of a number of food companies.
    • Tyson Foods (TSN +0.4%), Pilgrims Pride <<PPC>, and Hormel (HRL +0.6%) are three of the companies that could benefit the most if hedging strategies don't get in the way.
    • Raw material cost could turn lower for cereal makers Kellogg (K -0.1%), General Mills (GIS), and Post Holdings (POST -0.7%).
    • Soda sellers Coca-Cola (KO -0.5%), PepsiCo (PEP -0.3%), and Dr. Pepper Snapple (DPS -0.3%) won't mind the news either.

    • Shares of Tyson Foods (TSN +4.3%) are higher after the company surprised analysts with a brisk quarter led by steady demand for chicken, pork, and beef products. The trend of restaurants and consumers moving toward a higher mix of lower-margin chicken products seems to have abated, which is also welcome relief for Tyson.
    • Peers are out-performing market averages for the days on the good sector news. SFD +0.1%, HRL +0.2%, PPC +0.4%.

    • Price target is hiked to $46 from $39.
    • It's a "relative call", analyst Robert Moskow says. HRL "has roughly 11% upside over the next 12 months" which looks pretty good compared to zero percent for the food group.

Hormel (HRL) lowers estimates for profitability this year, dropping its EPS outlook to $1.88-$1.96 from prior guidance of $1.93-$2.03. The company cites higher input costs and poor pork sales for the shortfall. HRL -9% premarket, working off much of the gains picked up from enthusiasm in the sector after Smithfields Foods was bought out.

Smithfield Foods (SFD) moves up 1.4% premarket after Starboard Value pitches that a piecemeal sale of the company might make sense. The sum-of-the-parts chatter could also provide another lift for the packaged meats sector as a whole. On watch: Tyson Foods (TSN), Seaboard Corporation (SEB), Hillshire Brands (HSH), and Hormel Foods (HRL).

Hormel Foods (HRL) gets an upgrade to Buy from Hold from KeyBanc (PT $48) as accretion from the acquisition of the iconic Skippy peanut butter brand, lower costs, and improved new product growth should create upside to FY14 EPS estimates. Meanwhile, SA contributor Joseph Reinke said recently that the shares are overvalued and present a "low to negative return potential with moderate risk."

Shares of Tyson Foods (TSN) and Hormel Foods (HRL) trade higher following the blockbuster acquisition of Smithfield Foods. The rally stems from the premium Smithfield caught and the notion that China will increasingly look to U.S. food companies with safety concerns creating headlines all year long. Premarket: TSN +4.2%, HRL +2.2%.

Though Smithfield Foods has drawn the most attention from activist investors, calls for extracting more value from sector peers are also getting louder. On watch: Tyson Foods (TSN), Hormel Foods (HRL), Sanderson Farms (SAFM), Seaboard Corporation (SEB), Hillshire Brands (HSH).

More on Hormel Foods' (HRL) Q1: Volume was up 4% during the quarter. Revenue gains were led by a 49% Y/Y increase in Grocery Products, while Refrigerated Foods and Jennie-O Turkey Store sales both fell back. Segment operating profit slipped 2%, partially due to higher grain costs and weaker commodity turkey prices. The company backs its full year EPS guidance of $1.93-$2.03. (PR)
