Audit Integrity chief James Kaplan responds to news of criticism by CBS (CBS) and a lawsuit by Hertz Global (HTZ) - both of which appeared on Audit Integrity's most-likely-to-bankrupt list - with a dry, pointed letter (.pdf) amplifying the firm's concerns: "I must warn our readers that this will be the first and last time I depart from the 'pseudo-analysis' we call 'statistical.' The lawsuit filed by Hertz Global (HTZ) could have a chilling effect on what analysts and investors say to business journalists. Hertz alleges it was defamed by Audit Integrity on CNBC when the firm named it as one of 20 major companies most likely to go bankrupt. (previously)

It's odd and ironic that Hertz Global (HTZ), which by its own admission has a list of risk factors "nearly a mile long" (10-K), is suing research firm Audit Integrity for placing HTZ on its most likely to bankrupt list, Doug McIntyre says. Hertz is wasting shareholder money, and drawing attention to something that most shareholders probably never knew.

Customers might soon start taking better care of rental cars, as Hertz (HTZ) is testing a high-res photo system that would determine before/after dings and marks on its vehicles, to replace its walk-around-the-car- and-look-at-it system. The company says it loses $170M in damage costs per year.

Zipcar is gearing up for a 2010 IPO. Its car-sharing scheme, once viewed as 'wacky,' has been sufficiently successful that Hertz (HTZ) has announced plans to increase its NYC car-sharing program to 1,000 cars from 100 by year's end.
