Hertz (HTZ) is working with retailers such as Lowe's (LOW) and Walgreen (WAG), as well as with parking lot operator Standard Parking (STAN), to expand its reach beyond airports so that customers can rent cars at any hour and for any length of time. Hertz aims expand its neighborhood locations to 12,000 over the next few years from 2,600 now as it looks to challenge the leadership of Avis (CAR) in the hourly rental category and of Enterprise in the non-airport segment.

The automobile industry could face some damaging headwinds which will dent auto-related stocks, according to Morgan Stanley's Adam Jonas. He sees the decline in the yen and capacity growth which may be accelerating too fast as two significant risks. On the trickle-down theory,  the analyst thinks Goodyear Tire & Rubber (GT), Tenneco (TEN), Hertz (HTZ), and Avis Budget (CAR) should be avoided.

What do hedge funds see that Seeking Alpha readers don't? Of Goldman's list of stocks most-loved by hedge funds, two - John Malone cable plays Virgin Media (VMED) and Charter Communications (CHTR) - are barely followed by our readers, each with less than 500 Real Time Email Alerts subscribers. Another three - Hertz (HTZ), CBS, and Equinix (EQIX) - have, at best, moderate followings (1,100-1,400 subscribers). For comparison: Hess has 3.5K, GM 11.4K, JPM 23K, Google 76K, Apple 180K. While hedge funds as a whole struggle to beat the market, their top 20 holdings have done so with ease this year.

Getting crowded? After a home-run of a buy idea by Oscar Schaefer at the Roundtable in January, Barron's is back with another bullish call on Hertz (HTZ) - only now the price is 55% higher, the $10B market cap company is a favorite of the hedge fund crowd, and the winners of a recent high-profile investment competition won by pitching a buy of the auto-rental leader.

AIG remains at the top Goldman's list of hedge fund hotels (the 50 stocks appearing most frequently among hedge fund top 10 holdings). Google (GOOG) retains its #2 position. Apple (APPL) - in the top spot for 3 years until February - remains at #3. Goldman notes the basket has outperformed the S&P a bit this year and the top 20 has done better by more than 1000 basis points. We smell an ETF offering. The rest of the top 20: C, GM, PCLN, VMED, NWSA, MSFT, HTZ, JPM, APC, PFE, QCOM, CHTR, HES, CBS, EBAY, DAL, EQIX.

The winners of a Pershing Square investment competition at Columbia University Business School pitched Hertz Global (HTZ -1.1%) as a promising investment in a development which looks much more interesting now that a huge block of shares has been unloaded on to the books of underwriters. The students thought an activist investor could help unlock value at Hertz by spinning off its equipment rental business. Is is possible Bill Ackman likes the youthful idea?
