Thursday, May 16, 1:55 PM Quest Diagnostics (DGX +0.3%) moves to expand its lab business by acquiring the toxicology and clinical laboratory business of Concentra, a medical center operator owned by Humana (HUM). The business will be transitioned into DGX's national laboratory network of regional clinical and toxicology laboratories by the end of 2013. The the company also entered into a long-term agreement with Concentra to be its primary provider of workplace drug toxicology and clinical lab testing. Comment! [M&A, Healthcare]

Monday, May 6, 8:25 AM Humana (HUM) gets an upgrade from JPMorgan to Overweight from Neutral (price target $91 from $88) following last week's beat and raise. "What's a reasonable [minimum] return on invested capital metric that we should think about for the Medicare Advantage business?" analyst Justin Lake asked on the call. 13% "is the number that it is today [and] we expect to improve on it, but not in a predictive sense," management responded. Wednesday, May 1, 6:45 AM More on Humana's (HUM) Q1: "Outperformance across the company's portfolio," contract claim settlements, and delayed implementation of sequestration for the Medicare business, helped the company beat estimates and exceed prior guidance. CEO Bruce Broussard says the results "are a testament to the benefits of [a] focus on further developing new member and chronic care clinical programs." Friday, April 19, 2:46 PM Humana (HUM +0.8%) says it's fired its lobbying firm and launched an internal probe into the circumstances surrounding the leak of a significant change in Medicare Advantage rates earlier this month. The probe will focus on determining whether the company's interests were harmed by the ties between an outside lobbyist employed by HUM and an investment firm that received a 'heads-up' and sent out early word of the policy shift to its clients. Wednesday, April 17, 12:33 PM The big surge in health care stocks earlier this month just prior to the government's decision on Medicare Advantage rates may have been due to an email to sent by a former top congressional aide who now happens to be an outside lobbyist for Humana (HUM -1.9%). The email, which is now subject to an SEC probe, was sent to a Washington investment-research firm and circulated to clients just minutes before the close of trading, saying that "credible sources" had told them a decision had been made to restore the payments. 4 Comments [Healthcare]

It's reiterating a CL-Buy on UnitedHealth (UNH +7.6%), calling its valuation under 10X FY14 EPS attractive, as well a Buy on Health Net (HNT +3.6%) and WellCare (WCG +5.2%). It maintains Sell ratings on Humana (HUM +8.3%) and Universal American (UAM +9.9%) however, noting the majority of their earnings are tied to Medicaid Advantage with about half of those members in non-HMO plans." Tuesday, April 2, 8:49 AM Humana (HUM) says that the despite the proposed increase in Medicare Advantage rates in 2014, certain adjustments "may still present meaningful challenges in certain geographies." The company expects reductions under the Affordable Care Act and other factors to "nearly offset" the increase in the rates, while other adjustments are likely to hurt bid premiums in some markets.
