Furniture stocks are trading weak as smaller-sized Leon's Furniture reports sluggish numbers in Canada and the sub-sector gets lined up as a potential target of consumer spending pullback. Restoration Hardware (RH -3.5%), Pier 1 Imports (PIR -3.5%), Haverty Furniture (HVT -2.7%), and William- Sonoma (WSM -2.5%) are all underperforming on the day.

Restoration Hardware (RH) files its S-1 with the SEC as it prepares for an IPO of up to $150M. The company has posted double-digit revenue growth for the last 10 quarters, but is saddled with a heavy debt load. Of interest to BBBY, WSM, ETH, KIRK, and HVT, the retailer only projects annual growth in the home furnishings sector of 3% to 4% up to 2015.

The Butterfly Effect: A report from IBM's Benchmark shows a sharp increase in sales drive by social media referrals over the last two months with investments in online and mobile channels starting to contribute significantly to results. Despite the plans of major retailers to see back-to-school shopping spur electronics buying, in somewhat of an odd twist it was home furnishings that showed the biggest pickup in sales. On watch for a potentially big second half: BBBY, WSM, ETH, KIRK, HVT.

Specialty home furnishing companies are trading higher as they ride the coattails of Pier 1 Imports' strong same-store sales numbers and hiked FY12 guidance. (PIR +5.3%). So far this year, consumers haven't backed off in droves after seeing price increases on home accessories. Gainers: KIRK +4.9%, HVT +3.1%.

Raymond James raises its rating on Haverty Furniture (HVT +4.8%) to Outperform following the company's better-than-expected Q4 sales report. HVT's "better merchandising, best-in-class supply chain, and conservatively managed balance sheet" should allow it to capitalize on improved demand for residential furniture, the firm says.
