Vic, I think your point is true. The facts that you presented are alarming! I find it hard to understand how the ritual of having corporations reporting earnings is not with new Federal Regulations? Vic your concerns are justified. I give my respect to you. Leo Surprenant ReplyNext Week's Earnings Preview: The Roller Coaster Descends [view article]

Next Week's Earnings Preview: The Roller Coaster Descends [view article]
I, for one, am opposed to the ritual of having corporations reporting earnings on announced dates. The only requirement should be that the reports should be no later than a specific period of time after the quarters. This practice only feeds into speculation in the options markets and encourages manipulation in the stocks. The only requirement should be that companies report after the markets close and they should not allow after market trading or pre-market trading on and after announcement days to allow all interested parties to have a chance to hear the report and digest it's significance so that there is a level playing field. Reports should be made as soon as they are available. Companies should warn of upcoming surpises to reasonalby expected results as early as the approximate magnitue can be determined and again the off market trading should be limited after these announcements until the public can digest the information. Further I don't think it serves the best interest of investors for companies to give guidance beyond what which they can be reasonably certain and that isn't very much. The notion that companies produce smooth quarter to quarter earnings is false and it encourages all kinds of creative accounting to produce these "to the penny figures". All this is a child of Wall St. analyst and the average investor is swindled into trading on this artificial scenario. Vic ReplyBankrate.com Sued for Deceptive Online Mortgage Ads (RATE, BPOP, IACI) [view article]
So many clients will come and tell us that they saw some low rates on bankrate.com and some online business stuff. They will give unrealistic good faith estimate and which will be a estimate only not a reality. They will get some paper signed that they have this rate right now but client is not approved till last minute because no case is clear cut deal some have "A" problem and some have "B" problem. So in the end they will say client has problem "A" , "B" and so many other and they can not qualify. Closing date is just a week ahead, client is emotionally stressed, then they will ask you will qualify for a higher rate if they take they will close if not they will say they can fax the denial letter. But client need to close the home in a week because pressure from seller or his realtor, ok in this pressure client make an unwanted decision to go with them and get a higher rate. So when you shop for a mortgage always prefer people inside brick and mortar not online. Online is good for information and getting educated not shopping for mortgage rate. Here is the most famous line "When Bank Competes on a tree you always get a higher Rate" because bank has to spend lot of money to be on tree. Legg Mason's Bill Miller: Buys, Sells, Portfolio [view article]
"(quarter ending 12/31/06; filed 3/1/07) ... Amazon (AMZN): 256,000 shares (cost: $6.7 million); ..."I guess I'm missing something here. If I do the math on this (i.e. $6,700,000 / 256,000) I come up with an average purchase price of $26.17/share. This is a real good trick considering that the stock was never less than $30 in the 4th quarter.

Barry Diller's Curious Remarks On Match.com [view article]
Match.com is unlike the other "personals" sites. It caters to an older audience seeking a serious relationship. These people aren't as familiar with computers and websites as the younger generation. The audience is also turned off by the flirtation aspect of the sites targeted at younger people, as they seek long term relationships. They also get confused by the bells and whistles. Match.com did a lot of research and they have identified what the target audience is looking for.You make it sound as though Diller is confused - he is not. Match.com tried competing head to head with the newer sites and quickly found out that their target audiences were not the same, and they were losing their competitive advantage.
Match.com has since returned to what it does best and has attracted many more subscribers.
To those who are unfamiliar with Diller and his company, this quote seems confusing. I encourage you to to learn a bit more about IAC and Diller before taking comments such as these out of context and attempting to analyze them without enough background information. Reply
