IBM vs. ETF Alternatives
Company Description
International Business Machines Corporation (IBM or the company) was incorporated in the State of New York on June 16, 1911, as the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Co. (C-T-R), a consolidation of the Computing Scale Co. of America, the Tabulating Machine Co. and The International Time Recording... More

- Friday, December 7, 2012, 7:19 AM IBM will save millions starting next year - and perhaps start a trend - as it shifts to contributing to employee 401(k) accounts just once a year, Dec. 31. Those who leave the company before Dec. 15 will not qualify for a match. For employees - besides being induced not to leave the company mid-year - the move dilutes the dollar-cost-averaging power of contributions. Expect the government to have its say on the change. 25 Comments [U.S. Economy]
- Thursday, December 6, 2012, 11:44 AM Intel (INTC) has a dedicated salesperson for each of its "big four" cloud customers - Google, Amazon, Facebook, and Microsoft - says its server CPU chief. The big four develop their own Intel-based servers, and their preference for cheap, low-power, densely-packed hardware means they often use lower-margin CPUs than many enterprise clients - that's a big reason server industry revenue is declining, and the collective share of top-5 vendors slumping. But Intel is better off addressing this market than seeing cloud clients turn to AMD's SeaMicro unit or ARM-based CPUs. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Wednesday, November 28, 2012, 12:28 PM Having just bought flash storage vendor Texas Memory, IBM is hoping to create a flash memory interconnect standard that can improve performance relative to existing technologies such as serial-attached SCSI. Efforts to build faster flash interfaces could have implications for Fusion-io (FIO), which has been able to deliver superior performance (and charge premium pricing) in part by doing away with conventional interconnect technologies. Many industry players are already supporting the NVMe and SCSI Express standards, which aim to improve flash performance. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, November 16, 2012, 2:16 PM Gartner forecasts global enterprise IT spending will rise 2.5% next year to $2.68T. Investors should be aware these estimates get revised frequently - 4 months after hiking its 2012 IT spending growth forecast to 3%, Gartner claims 2012 will only see "scant overall growth" due to macro issues that have clearly pressured (I, II) many enterprise IT names. Decent IT spending growth from financial services, telecom, and media companies is expected to offset continued government weakness. Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, November 15, 2012, 6:45 PM More from Dell's FQ3 call and slides: Large enterprises (-8% Y/Y, +5% for enterprise solutions) are said to be deferring discretionary IT purchases; that's backed up by October's earnings reports. Dell was a little more positive about SMBs (-1%, +15% for ES). Sales of DCS servers, used by Internet companies for "scale-out" deployments, rose 126% Y/Y. Networking +40%, boosted by Force10. More than one analyst suggested a big change is needed in PC strategy: cost cuts, price cuts (to maintain scale), and a retreat from the consumer market were among the suggestions. 2 Comments [Tech, Earnings]
- Thursday, November 15, 2012, 10:17 AM IBM's financing arm plans to offer $4B in credit over the next 12 months to SMBs in an effort to stoke demand for technologies such as cloud services, analytics software, and Big Blue's PureSystems line. Some of the credit packages will feature 0% interest for the first year and no money down. SMBs have often been early adopters of cloud services, due to their lack of up-front licensing/installation costs. Last year, IBM offered a relatively paltry $1B in financing for such projects. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, November 9, 2012, 6:26 AM Kenexa (KNXA): Q3 EPS of $0.33 beats by $0.02. Revenue of $90.7M (+20% Y/Y) misses by $4M. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Tech]
- Tuesday, October 30, 2012, 12:29 PM IBM has added $5B to its stock buyback plan, raising the company's total authorization size to $11.7B. That's good for buying back 5.3% of outstanding shares at current levels. IBM's huge buybacks are a big reason why it has met or beaten EPS estimates (I, II) in recent quarters even as its revenue misses. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, October 30, 2012, 11:07 AM IBM (IBM) declares $0.85/share quarterly dividend, in line with previous. Forward yield 1.76%. For shareholders of record Nov 09. Payable Dec 10. Ex-div date Nov 07. The board announces additional $5B for stock repurchase program. (PR) Comment! [Dividends]
- Monday, October 29, 2012, 8:08 AM IBM (IBM) scientists make a breakthrough in the use of carbon nanotubes for microchips, which could help manufacturers continue to meet "Moore's Law" - doubling the number of transistors that can be inserted on a single chip every 12-18 months. The technique should also allow for an increase in "clock speed," which has largely stalled. However, IBM probably won't perfect the use of the nanotubes until the end of the decade. 2 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, October 26, 2012, 4:26 PM Though Qlik (QLIK -7.7%) claimed macro issues are responsible for its Q3 miss and Q4 guidance, FBN's Shelby Seyrafi believes the company is seeing tougher competition from business intelligence software rivals Oracle, SAP, IBM, and Tableau. Seyrafi notes the number of $100K+ deals signed by Qlik fell by nearly 20% for the second quarter in a row, albeit while granting $250K+ deals rose to 20 from 15. He adds Tableau "has greater focus (and momentum) in the Americas" (QLIK transcript) Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Friday, October 26, 2012, 9:23 AM CA -6.4% following its FQ2 report. Not only did revenue miss estimates, the company guided for FY13 (ends March '13) revenue of $4.58B-$4.67B and EPS of $2.36-$2.44, below a consensus of $4.76B and $2.48. FQ2 EPS was propped up by $250M in stock buybacks. Bookings fell 13% Y/Y, and backlog by 7% (North American bookings -25%). CA has faced tough competition from SolarWinds (SWI), ServiceNow (NOW), and IBM's Tivoli unit. (transcript) Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Wednesday, October 24, 2012, 1:17 PM Unisys (UIS -13.9%) plummets as its Q3 EPS beat (assisted by rising hardware margins) is overshadowed by a revenue miss caused by a 15% Y/Y drop in services revenue. U.S. sales (-24% Y/Y) were particularly weak, thanks to a big drop in federal demand, and hardware revenue fell 10%, as rising server/mainframe sales were offset by lower reseller revenue. The results could have negative implications for bigger mainframe/services rival IBM. (transcript) 1 Comment [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Monday, October 22, 2012, 6:29 PM Gartner now expects 2012 global IT spending of $3.6T (hurt by forex), down a bit from a prior forecast of $3.75T. Spending is expected to grow a muted 3.8% next year to $3.7T. Microsoft and IBM's Q3 reports and commentary (I, II) have already raised fears of a soft IT spending environment. Also: Gartner expects half of all non-PC devices sold in 2016, and half of all business IT devices sold at the end of the decade, will be bought by employees - that's a long-term trend that could benefit Apple and hurt Microsoft. 5 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, October 18, 2012, 7:48 AM IBM is reportedly in advanced talks to buy Red Bend, an Israeli developer of mobile virtualization and device management software, for $200M-$250M. Red Bend's offerings, which compete with VMware (I, II) and Citrix, allow multiple operating systems to be installed on a mobile device, and help service providers handle remote updates. The company, which has over 80 customers, also offers mobile analytics tools, something that ties into Big Blue's broader analytics push. 1 Comment [Tech, M&A]
- Wednesday, October 17, 2012, 10:14 AM Enterprise IT stocks slump following IBM's (IBM -3.7%) Q3 revenue miss, which had much to do with drops in mainframe, storage, and middleware sales. Earnings call remarks about weak September demand aren't helping either, though some might be encouraged IBM's Chinese sales rose 19% Y/Y at a time when others (I, II) are seeing Chinese demand slump. EMC (EMC -1.5%), VMware (VMW -1.9%), Citrix (CTXS -2.2%), Red Hat (RHT -1.7%), and Tibco (TIBX -3.6%) are among the losers. 1 Comment [Tech]
