International Business Machines Corporation (IBM or the company) was incorporated in the State of New York on June 16, 1911, as the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Co. - Thursday, May 16, 12:16 PM Cisco JV partner EMC (EMC +4.5%) joins the list of companies rallying in response to Cisco's FQ3 beat and guidance. Cisco mentioned on its earnings call integrated hardware solutions such as Vblock (offered by the Cisco/EMC VCE JV) are driving demand for its UCS servers - Cisco's UCS unit saw 77% Y/Y rev. growth. All in all, it's a good day for enterprise IT names, who are happy to receive some good earnings news after getting plenty of bad news (I, II, III, IV). HPQ +1.7%. IBM +1.3%. ORCL +1.3%. VMW +2.6%. TIBX +4.1%. CTXS +3.9%. CRM +3.8%. JIVE +4.1%. NTGR +2.7%. CVLT +2.6%. INFA +3%. (others rallying: I, II) 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, April 19, 9:55 AM IBM (IBM -6.5%) would've missed Q1 EPS estimates by $0.34, rather than $0.05, if not for a lower tax rate, says BMO's Keith Bachman. Like others, Bachman is skeptical Big Blue's woes are solely due to execution, given weak results from peers (one can now add SAP to the list). "We think demand was perhaps weaker than we and the companies thought." Sterne Agee, however, is staying bullish precisely because it doesn't consider IBM's issues company-specific. Meanwhile, the WSJ is backing up CRN's report about the relatively low-margin x86 server unit being on sale. Morgan Stanley estimates the unit had 2012 sales of $4.9B. - Thursday, April 18, 4:09 PM IBM (IBM): Q1 EPS of $3.00 misses by $0.05. Revenue of $23.41B (-5.1% Y/Y) misses by $1.28B. Continues to guide for 2013 EPS of at least $16.70 vs. consensus of $16.77. Shares -3.7% AH. CC at 4:30PM ET (webcast). (PR) 5 Comments [Tech, Earnings, On the Move, Breaking News, Top Stories]
- Friday, April 12, 9:32 AM IBM (IBM -1.1%) and Wipro (WIT -5.7%) join the list of stocks affected by Infosys' (INFY -17.7%) revenue miss and light FY14 (ends March '14) guidance. In addition to forecasting soft revenue, the Indian outsourcing giant says it expects its pricing and margins to be pressured over the near-term, though the company's deal pipeline is said to be slightly better than what it was a year ago. Is the weakness simply a result of macro and government budget issues, or are cloud services also taking a toll? 1 Comment [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Thursday, March 21, 11:39 AM Evercore and CLSA have downgraded Oracle (ORCL -8.8%) following its FQ3 miss and light top-line guidance. The numbers have many worried about the impact of cloud apps ... and not just on application software sales. "As customers move to the cloud, you get a lot of the functionality consolidated ... so you need less hardware and less databases and middleware," says Pac Crest. UBS is still bullish: "Historically when they have a miss it’s a great time to buy." Interestingly, cloud rivals are higher - WDAY +1.4%, CRM +0.4%, N +1.2% - even as other peers follow the tech sector lower. IBM -1.6%. INFA -1.6%. RHT -1.1%. - Wednesday, March 20, 4:44 PM Some enterprise IT names slump in response to Oracle's FQ3 miss, which included a surprising 2% Y/Y drop in new software license/cloud subscription revenue, and a 23% Y/Y drop in hardware product sales. InfiniBand hardware supplier Mellanox (MLNX) is the worst-hit, -7% AH. IBM -1%. HPQ -1%. EMC -1.2%. RHT -1.9%. VMW -1%. TIBX -1.2%. TDC -1%. Archrival SAP is unchanged for now. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, January 23, 11:55 AM "For all its complexity, IBM (IBM +5%) continues to emphasize a simple goal – growing EPS through a variety of tools," writes CLSA. Big Blue's Q4 report and 2013 guidance indicate it remains quite successful in this respect in spite of minimal top-line growth, and the market is responding accordingly. As far as the top-line goes, UBS is encouraged by an upbeat earnings call and opportunities in focus areas such as emerging markets, analytics, and cloud solutions. ISI is more cautious, arguing IBM's valuation (12.3x 2013E EPS) is a little too high. 3 Comments [Tech, On the Move]

After-hours top gainers, as of 5:15 p.m.: CREE +15%. ISRG +9%. GOOG +5%. IBM +4%. SNE +2%.
After-hours top losers: STRI -21%. BNNY -11%. WCC -4%. SNH -3%. IVR -3%. Comment! [On the Move] - Tuesday, January 22, 4:11 PM IBM (IBM): Q4 EPS of $5.39 beats by $0.14. Revenue of $29.30B (-0.6% Y/Y) beats by $210M. Expects 2013 EPS of at least $16.70, above consensus of $16.63. Shares +4.1% AH. - Friday, January 11, 12:47 PM Splunk (SPLK +6.3%) is rallying, apparently on a rumor IBM could bid for the company. As the top vendor in a fast-growing analytics software segment, Splunk is definitely in IBM's wheelhouse. But it also trades at lofty multiples and would probably require a buyout price north of $4B. 18.8% of the float was shorted as of Dec. 14. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Friday, October 26, 2012, 9:23 AM CA -6.4% following its FQ2 report. Not only did revenue miss estimates, the company guided for FY13 (ends March '13) revenue of $4.58B-$4.67B and EPS of $2.36-$2.44, below a consensus of $4.76B and $2.48. FQ2 EPS was propped up by $250M in stock buybacks. Bookings fell 13% Y/Y, and backlog by 7% (North American bookings -25%). CA has faced tough competition from SolarWinds (SWI), ServiceNow (NOW), and IBM's Tivoli unit. (transcript) Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Wednesday, October 24, 2012, 1:17 PM Unisys (UIS -13.9%) plummets as its Q3 EPS beat (assisted by rising hardware margins) is overshadowed by a revenue miss caused by a 15% Y/Y drop in services revenue. U.S. sales (-24% Y/Y) were particularly weak, thanks to a big drop in federal demand, and hardware revenue fell 10%, as rising server/mainframe sales were offset by lower reseller revenue. The results could have negative implications for bigger mainframe/services rival IBM. (transcript) 1 Comment [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Tuesday, October 16, 2012, 4:18 PM IBM (IBM): Q3 EPS of $3.62 in-line. Revenue of $24.75B (-5% Y/Y) misses by $630M. Expects 2012 EPS of at least $15.10 vs. $15.14 consensus. Shares -3.2% AH. (PR) 7 Comments [Tech, Earnings, On the Move, Breaking News, Top Stories]
- Friday, October 5, 2012, 10:35 AM An upgrade to Buy from Nomura helps Informatica (INFA +5.2%) rebound a bit from the bloodletting it saw thanks to its Q3 warning. Nomura argues the risk/reward is favorable, but cautions Informatica's license revenue will likely take several quarters to recover due to sales execution issues. Yesterday, Evercore argued Informatica, which faces strong competition from an IBM that has aggressively expanded its analytics software lineup, appears to be dealing with company-specific problems. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Monday, August 27, 2012, 9:18 AM IBM is buying cloud HR software vendor Kenexa (KNXA) for $1.3B, or $46/share. The price represents a 42% premium to Kenexa's Friday close. The acquisition follows SAP and Oracle's purchases of peers SuccessFactors and Taleo, and comes as Workday, another big name in the space, prepares an IPO. Cornerstone OnDemand (CSOD), a cloud HR name that hasn't found a buyer yet, could trade higher on the news. IBM expects the acquisition to close in Q4.
