Earnings Power vs. Investor Sentiment [view article]
Regarding Apple, the red dots of the consensus estimate are still going up, but not as much as in the past year. However, at this moment in time it is very hard to predict Apple's earnings, because they have only just started in the phone business. It looks like they are doing extremely well in that department, so it is only logical that earnings estimates will rise in the coming year, something that's not yet reflected in the chart. And Apple has a massive amount of money to start another new venture if they wish to do so, like television, navigation or gaming. Don't forget they are doing very well in the PC business too. So I'm not too worried about the share price of AAPL. ReplyEarnings Power vs. Investor Sentiment [view article]
Regarding Apple, your analysis assumes that consensus earnings is reasonably accurate. And yet for the past 5 years Apple has handsomely beaten analyst expectations and with the most current quarterly report coming up it seems that again Apple will deliver better than expected results. The point when Apple becomes a mature and slowly growing company like Starbucks or some railroad company seems to still be quite far away. Dell Adds 'Gutsy Gibbon' to Linux Lineup [view article]
I suspect Dell will be the first one there. I know computers without Windows pre-installed have been only $50 cheaper (which was a problem), if Microsoft is neutered in its ability to charge computer suppliers unfairly, then the actual cost of a computer with Linux will get closer to half the cost of one with MS stolen-Linux-called-Wi... installed. GNU GPL will slowly kill software as anything but a professional engineering service. The industry, as I recently learned, steals about everything they do, regardless of the license. Microsoft is far from the only such thief. GNU GPL legalizes borrowing code under the precondition that you return the actual code to the Free Software Community under the same license.I might add that this is effective regardless of any enforcement, and that when you include GNU GPL software in a product you charge for, every bit of that entire piece of software is automatically under the GNU GPL, so once XP and all below are proven to include GNU GPL code, most people can sue Microsoft for illegally charging them, as well as publish all the code Microsoft considered proprietary prior to the exposure.
So from my background, I could suggest that a crack of Windows XP code be made public, so that it could be shown that software under GNU GPL is incorporated (as it was under Gates's tenure). Windows XP would then altogether be free, under GNU GPL, and all computer manufacturers could then include Windows XP without paying one red penny to Microsoft. Then the open source development community could embrace GNU-XP and make a better Vista than Vista.
Anyway, I'm looking for something like this to happen, and I thought it was worth sharing while the subject was related.
*I suspect that Vista was the first OS Microsoft actually produced without stealing GNU GPL software and incorporating it in software they charged for. Reply
IBM Set to Spend $1.6B on Emerging Markets [view article]
I don't agree with the comments of the first post, but besides the fact, IBM's software organization is #2 behind Microsoft. So, also software products. Also regarding the announcement. IBM has been in these markets for years, in Hungary for example, 80+ years. This new money means, more emphasis. But its not like they are starting from scratch. Reply

IIF is actually a closed-end-fund, not an ETF. IFN is another Indian closed-end-fund and INP is an exchange-traded-note. I don't know of an ETF for India, but maybe there is one.I'm not sure what the relationship is between IBM doing business in a country, and that country "already having an ETF". Reply

One problem-- does IBM still actually HAVE any products? They sold PC's to Lenovo; their servers suck; and their "services" suck worse. ReplyHuang

"I saw no particular news to drive the rise today;"I think folks have figured out Apple is somewhat recession-resistant. You need a laptop; you need a laptop. You need a phone; you need a phone. You're not going to be going out to buy a new car or a boat with so much uncertainty in the economy. Reply

Five Implications of OSS in Software Investment Research [view article]
Hi Dennis, thanks for the kind words! I am not a software executive though :-) Just a product manager who has lived though implementing an OSS based business model with WebSphere Community Edition (WAS CE). It was this experience and the linkage of WAS CE to the rest of the WebSphere product family that helped further shape my views on OSS. We've been able to use OSS to drive our business, in the face of OSS competition, and our WebSphere revenue (publicly available) can attest to this.I truly believe that the future of the software market is a hybrid model, where vendors use OSS (-based) products to satisfy some user needs, and also offer higher value products under commercial licenses.
