- Thursday, May 16, 12:28 PM Thanks to a $30M payment stemming from a favorable arbitration ruling in a dispute with contract manufacturer Pegatron, InterDigital (IDCC +1.1%) now expects Q2 revenue of $67.5M-$74M, well above a $47.5M consensus. Revenue from current royalties is expected to total $43.5M, and revenue from past sales (largely Pegatron-related) $24M-$30.5M. Shares are up just modestly in response. 1 Comment [Tech, Earnings]

A 58% Y/Y increase in patent adminitration & licensing expenses to $36.9M weighed on earnings, as InterDigital continues to pursue both ITC suits again mobile OEMs, as well as arbitration battles. (Q1 transcript) Comment! [Tech, On the Move]

- Friday, April 5, 2:11 PM Google, BlackBerry, Red Hat, and Earthlink submit a paper (.pdf) to the FTC and DOJ calling for actions against perceived patent trolls, arguing such firms cost U.S. companies $80B in 2011 after factoring both direct and indirect costs. To back up their stance, the companies claim suits from "patent assertion entities" have risen 4x since '05, and now account for 62% of all IP suits. The paper arrives 6 weeks after Pres. Obama criticized patent trolls, and amidst expectations of Congressional action. Companies that could be affected: RMBS, IDCC, VHC, ACTG, WILN. 11 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, March 15, 3:32 PM InterDigital, Inc. (IDCC) declares $0.10/share quarterly dividend, in line with previous. Forward yield 0.86%. For shareholders of record Apr. 10. Payable Apr. 24. Ex-div date Apr. 08. (PR) Comment! [Dividends]
- Tuesday, February 26, 10:20 AM Sony (SNE +1.2%) will pay InterDigital (IDCC +1.3%) $125M in cash over 3 years under the terms of their recent 3G/4G patent licensing deal, InterDigital discloses in its 2012 10-K. $22.3 of that total was recognized in Q4, fueling a big earnings beat. InterDigital, which recently formed an R&D JV with Sony in tandem with its licensing deal, has also acquired patents from the electronics giant it estimates are worth $28.9M. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, February 20, 5:08 PM More on InterDigital: The huge Q4 beat was fueled by a $22.3M payment made on past device sales from a new, unnamed licensee signed in December. Q1 revenue is expected to total $46M-$47M, soundly above a consensus of $32.8M. Opex (exc. $12.5M in restructuring charges) +36% Y/Y to $56.5M, thanks largely to a 48% increase in patent admin/licensing costs to $31.3M. Per-unit royalty revenue -21% Y/Y (weak BlackBerry/HTC sales) to $29.8M, fixed fee revenue roughly flat at $33.7M. IDCC +2.2% AH. CC at 6PM ET (webcast). (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings]
- Wednesday, February 20, 4:34 PM Interdigital Comm (IDCC): Q4 EPS of $0.38 beats by $0.32. Revenue of $87.9M beats by $26.73M. Shares +0.7% AH. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News, Tech]

- Friday, February 15, 12:09 PM Pres. Obama isn't a fan of patent trolls. "They are essentially trying to leverage and hijack somebody else's idea and see if they can extort some money," Obama stated during a Google+ hangout. He added, "Our efforts at patent reform are only about halfway to where we need to go." The remarks come as the DOJ and FTC hold hearings on patent trolls, and an appeals court debates whether software should be patentable. Some IP holders accused of being patent trolls: ACTG, VRNG, RMBS, VHC, IDCC, WILN. 45 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, February 12, 1:46 PM InterDigital (IDCC -1.9%) slumps after announcing: 1) An ITC hearing about a 3G patent infringement complaint levied against Nokia, Huawei, and ZTE has commenced 2) The ITC's Office of Unfair Import Investigations Staff is only involved with 2 of the 7 patents InterDigital is asserting in the complaints (unlike prior complaints, where it covered all issues), and that the staff didn't support the company's stance on those 2 patents in ts pre-trial position. InterDigital's Q4 report is due on Feb. 20. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, January 3, 4:06 PM InterDigital (IDCC +0.6%) has launched an R&D JV with Sony (SNE -0.3%) focused on machine-to-machine (M2M) mobile connectivity. The JV, called Convida Wireless, is being announced less than 3 months after InterDigital announced a restructuring in which the company will pare back its R&D spending and focus more of what it does spend on "market-ready technologies" such as M2M. The JV agreement also features a Sony license for InterDigital's 3G and 4G IP. Comment! [Tech]

We design and develop advanced digital wireless technologies for use in digital cellular and wireless IEEE 802-related products and networks. We actively participate in and contribute our technology solutions to worldwide organizations responsible for the development and approval of Standards to which digital cellular and IEEE 802-compliant products are built and our contributions are often incorporated into such Standards. In addition, we develop solutions for improving bandwidth availability and network capacity, wireless security and seamless connectivity and mobility across networks and devices. We offer licenses to our patents to equipment producers that manufacture, use and sell digital cellular and IEEE 802-related products. In addition, we offer for license or sale our mobile broadband modem solutions (modem IP, know-how, and reference platforms) to mobile device manufacturers, semiconductor companies, and other equipment producers that manufacture, use and sell digital cellular products. We have built our suite of technology and patent offerings through independent development, joint development with other companies, and selected acquisitions. We have also assembled a number of leading technology partners that share our vision and complement our internal research and development efforts. Currently, we generate revenues primarily from royalties received under our patent license agreements. We also generate revenues by licensing our technology solutions and providing related development support.
As an early participant in the digital wireless market, we developed pioneering solutions for the two primary cellular air interface technologies in use today: TDMA and CDMA technologies. That early involvement, as well as our continued development of advanced digital wireless technologies, has enabled us to create our significant worldwide portfolio of patents and patent applications. Included in that portfolio are a number of patents and patent applications, which we believe are or may be essential or may become essential to 2G, 3G, and LTE cellular Standards and other wireless Standards such as IEEE 802. Accordingly, we believe that companies making, using or selling products compliant with these Standards require a license under our essential patents and will require licenses under essential patents that may issue from our pending patent applications. In conjunction with our participation in certain Standards bodies, we have filed declarations stating that we have patents which we believe are or may be essential or may become essential, and that we agree to make our essential patents available for use and license on fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory terms or similar terms consistent with the requirements of the respective Standards organizations.
Third party products incorporating our patented inventions include, without limitation:
•Mobile devices, including cellular phones, wireless personal digital assistants and notebook computers, data cards and similar products;
•Base stations and other wireless infrastructure equipment; and
•Components and modules for wireless devices.
We also incorporate our inventions into our own IP modem solutions. In addition to conforming to applicable Standards, our solutions also include proprietary implementations for which we seek patent protection. Our development areas include adjacent wireless technologies within the wireless ecosystems and across the broad array of converged devices, networks, and services.
Our investments in the development of advanced digital wireless technologies and related products and solutions include sustaining a highly specialized engineering team and providing that team with the equipment and advanced software platforms necessary to support the development of technologies. Over each of the last three years, cost of development has been our largest expense category, ranging between $64.0 million and $98.9 million. The largest portion of this cost has been personnel costs.
InterDigital’s predecessor company incorporated in 1972 under the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and conducted its initial public offering in November 1981. Following an internal corporate reorganization in July 2007, InterDigital Communications Corporation converted into a limited liability company and became the wholly-owned operating subsidiary of InterDigital, Inc. Our corporate headquarters and administrative offices are located in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, USA. Our research and technology development teams are located in the following locations: King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, USA; Melville, New York, USA; and Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
