Thursday, May 16, 12:28 PM Thanks to a $30M payment stemming from a favorable arbitration ruling in a dispute with contract manufacturer Pegatron, InterDigital (IDCC +1.1%) now expects Q2 revenue of $67.5M-$74M, well above a $47.5M consensus. Revenue from current royalties is expected to total $43.5M, and revenue from past sales (largely Pegatron-related) $24M-$30.5M. Shares are up just modestly in response. 1 Comment [Tech, Earnings]

Friday, April 5, 2:11 PM Google, BlackBerry, Red Hat, and Earthlink submit a paper (.pdf) to the FTC and DOJ calling for actions against perceived patent trolls, arguing such firms cost U.S. companies $80B in 2011 after factoring both direct and indirect costs. To back up their stance, the companies claim suits from "patent assertion entities" have risen 4x since '05, and now account for 62% of all IP suits. The paper arrives 6 weeks after Pres. Tuesday, February 26, 10:20 AM Sony (SNE +1.2%) will pay InterDigital (IDCC +1.3%) $125M in cash over 3 years under the terms of their recent 3G/4G patent licensing deal, InterDigital discloses in its 2012 10-K. $22.3 of that total was recognized in Q4, fueling a big earnings beat. InterDigital, which recently formed an R&D JV with Sony in tandem with its licensing deal, has also acquired patents from the electronics giant it estimates are worth $28.9M. Comment! [Tech]

Q1 revenue is expected to total $46M-$47M, soundly above a consensus of $32.8M. Opex (exc. $12.5M in restructuring charges) +36% Y/Y to $56.5M, thanks largely to a 48% increase in patent admin/licensing costs to $31.3M. Friday, February 15, 12:09 PM Pres. Obama isn't a fan of patent trolls. "They are essentially trying to leverage and hijack somebody else's idea and see if they can extort some money," Obama stated during a Google+ hangout. He added, "Our efforts at patent reform are only about halfway to where we need to go." The remarks come as the DOJ and FTC hold hearings on patent trolls, and an appeals court debates whether software should be patentable. Tuesday, February 12, 1:46 PM InterDigital (IDCC -1.9%) slumps after announcing: 1) An ITC hearing about a 3G patent infringement complaint levied against Nokia, Huawei, and ZTE has commenced 2) The ITC's Office of Unfair Import Investigations Staff is only involved with 2 of the 7 patents InterDigital is asserting in the complaints (unlike prior complaints, where it covered all issues), and that the staff didn't support the company's stance on those 2 patents in ts pre-trial position. Thursday, January 3, 4:06 PM InterDigital (IDCC +0.6%) has launched an R&D JV with Sony (SNE -0.3%) focused on machine-to-machine (M2M) mobile connectivity. The JV, called Convida Wireless, is being announced less than 3 months after InterDigital announced a restructuring in which the company will pare back its R&D spending and focus more of what it does spend on "market-ready technologies" such as M2M. The JV agreement also features a Sony license for InterDigital's 3G and 4G IP. Comment! [Tech]
