ETF Update: Is There Hope for Consumer Stocks? [view article]
This short article opened my eyes to a world of possibilities beyond its focussed discussion of the consumer services ETF. The list of ETF's and their ranked performances was, in itself, new to me; and the ability to assess the given links in order to better understand this ETF world makes the article a most valuable tool. I intend to tune into this site very often! ReplyETF Update: Is There Hope for Consumer Stocks? [view article]

“Oil doesn't have a genuine relationship with stock assets over time. Even shorter time period assessments would ironically show a positive correlation between the price of crude oil and stocks. After all, oil rose significantly in the bull market uptrend for stocks from 3/03-9/07.”You’ve got to be kidding. Here is an idea. With oil at $140 and gasoline at $4.70 (in Ca.) folks are going to reduce their driving. This is going to torpedo the auto industry which will cause the economy to crater. I don’t know about you but I firmly believe that with the economy in the toilet the stock market may get sucked under. What do you think? By the way, with oil at $140 the airlines will follow the cars right down the old flusher.

Outlook for Select Sector ETFs [view article]
Jonathan:As I say in the article--three years of trailing data is what I use. As far as getting rid of an under-performing sector, that will require study beyond QPP. The Financial sector is a great example. I have been very light on financials since well before the meltdown. I own some BAC, though, and it has gotten pounded. I am neither selling nor buying more. I invest for the long term and that is really what QPP is designed to help with. Over periods of less than a year, momentum tends to dominate--as I have discussed in some articles.
Personally, I do my homework up front and then I tend to get in for the long haul. I do not try to time my major investments in terms of selling out when they are down. When I am adding money, I will use data such as these to help provide ideas for sectors to look at.
The difference between under-valued and distressed is also apparent if you look at projected risk levels...

Outlook for Select Sector ETFs [view article]
Geoff,Thank you for your uniquely academic approach. Can you be more specific in the length of the trailing time frames you use? As well, how often you look to make a change to a long term portfolio if a sector has just become a lead anchor? As you mention there is a difference between undervalued and distressed so when are you making your decision and acting upon it?
Thanks,

US manufacturing economy stalling per today's news. "Manufacturing activity in the New York area deteriorated slightly in May, the New York Federal Reserve Bank said Thursday. The bank's Empire State Manufacturing index fell to negative 3.2 in May from 0.6 in April. This is the third month in the last four that the index has been negative. Readings below zero indicate contraction. The report was weaker than expected. Economists were expecting to be essentially flat in April. "Expect Basic Materials IYM to pull back. Higher costs for Basic Materials companies due to energy price spike matched with inability to raise prices in a near-recessionary environment. Reply

The weekly chart analysis you use is a great communicator for those of us who find visual language a better vehicle for understanding than confounding commentary and the use of words that carry bias and opinion. I guess a picture is truly worth a thousand words. Thanks for compiling the picture. Reply
