The week's ETF movers - Gainers: XLK +3.9%. QQQ +3.7%. EPI +3.6%. EWY +3.2%. ILF +3.1%.
ETF Losers: GAZ -4.6%. UNG -4.2%. VXX -2.8%. GDXJ -2.4%. TLT -2.0%. Comment! [On the Move] - Monday, March 18, 4:57 AM Ron Rowland offers additional highlights on the recently expanded lineup of commission-free ETFs over at Fidelity including the following caveat: Funds not held for 30 days by retail investors or 60 days by RIAs using Fidelity as a custodian will be subject to a $7.95 per-trade commission. Some RIAs have complained that the longer holding period directed at them is unfair. Rowland spells out the full list of affected ETFs here. Comment!
- Tuesday, February 12, 3:44 PM Markets make opinons, they say, and Brazil's (EWZ) poor performance has managers pulling funds and talking about long-term troubles for the next great country. Money is instead chasing performance in Mexico (EWW), Peru (EPU), and Chile (ECH). A 10% move up in the Bovespa and it's our guess the prospects for Brazil among the adviser crowd will have improved. Comment! [Global & FX]
- Wednesday, January 16, 2:52 PM Exposure to Brazil (EWZ), only better, the Latin American 40 ETF (ILF) also has a heavy weighting in Mexican giants like Carlos Slim's America Movil (AMX) and Wal-Mart Mexico (WMMVY.PK). The Mexican additions have allowed ILF a far-superior performance to the Brazil offering. 1 Comment [Global & FX]

After-hours top gainers, as of 5:15 p.m.: UVXY +7.84%. TVIX +5.87%. VIIX +5.21%. VIXY +4.85%. VXX +4.37%.
After-hours top losers: ILF -6.47%. XIV -6.26%. SVXY -5.11%. TTI -2.97%. UPRO -2.41%. 2 Comments [On the Move] - Thursday, December 13, 2012, 12:04 PM Latin American stocks (ILF) have outperformed much of the developed world for most of the last decade, but that could be about to change. Using EFA as a proxy for developed markets, ex-North America, J.C. Parets sees a huge base and potential bottom formed in the EFA/ILF ratio. Bulls on beaten down spots like Japan and Europe may have reason to cheer in coming years. Comment! [Quick Ideas, Global & FX]
- Tuesday, April 17, 2012, 2:53 AM If China grows "only" 7.5% this year, Latin America will likely feel the pain, as China has become one of the largest trading partners for many Lat.Am. countries and has helped open Asia as an export market. In Brazil, exports to China have increased more than forty fold since 2000, growth that is likely unsustainable as China slows. Comment! [Global & FX]
- Thursday, January 19, 2012, 9:40 AM Defining overbought as being more than 5% above a 50-day moving average, Bespoke says 24% of tracked ETFs fit the bill. Leading the list is the homebuilders (XHB), more than 13% above its 50 day MA; Brazil (EWZ) leads the country ETFs, 8.2% above. A few more days of market gains and look for talk about the entire market being overbought. Comment! [Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, May 12, 2011, 4:54 PM "In good times, everybody looks very handsome" says Nicolas Eyzaguirre of the IMF (formerly Chilean Fin Min), issuing a stern warning to Latin American countries to prepare for an inevitable economic shock. "We are much more prone to overspend in good times than other parts of the world." 3 Comments [Global & FX]
- Tuesday, February 15, 2011, 5:30 PM Not only do emerging markets have to deal with slowing growth, rate hikes, and inflation, but their shares are not necessarily cheap. RBC points out the ratio of emerging market valuations to G7 valuations is at the highest level since right before it collapsed in the mid-90s. Comment! [Global & FX]
- Wednesday, January 19, 2011, 4:13 PM The re-emergence of capital controls in Latin America has some worrying about a replay of the conditions that led to 1980s hyperinflation. Most countries run current account deficits, meaning they must borrow to buy dollars in order to hold down their currency, leaving them vulnerable if credit conditions worsen. Comment! [Global & FX]
- Tuesday, January 11, 2011, 2:35 PM Latin American enjoys the commodity boom, but frets about contracting Dutch Disease. Resources account for 53% of exports vs. 40% a decade ago, as manufacturing shrinks. Policymakers try stay on top of the issue, holding down currencies, building savings, and investing with an eye towards long-term productivity. 1 Comment [Global & FX]
- Friday, January 7, 2011, 5:30 PM The risk of owning Argentinian bonds drops the most of any nation this week as beans in the teens boosts the economy of the world's 3rd largest soybean producer. “Soy prices improve domestic liquidity, improve taxes ... so it overall improves the ability to pay," says an analyst with RBS. Comment! [Global & FX]
- Friday, December 31, 2010, 12:17 PM Peru, up 64%, is the strongest performer in a solid year for the MSCI Emerging Markets Index. Mining and sugar companies make up nearly 70% of the capitalization of Peru's IGBVL index, pretty fair industries to own in 2010. 3 Comments [Global & FX]
- Thursday, December 16, 2010, 3:41 PM "After all this money has flooded in ... it's hard to find fundamental value," says top-ranked international fund manager David Herro, speaking about emerging market equities. Herro has reduced emerging market stocks to 4% of his portfolio following their biggest rally in 16 years. 1 Comment [Global & FX]
- Friday, March 5, 2010, 11:22 AM M&A activity in Latin America is off to its best start in a decade - and it's the only region showing in increase in transactions from the end of 2009. Recovery in Brazil and Mexico is spurring consolidation. (ETFs: ILF, GML) Comment!
