- Monday, May 20, 7:06 AM Star Trek: Into Darkness pulled in $84.1M over its four-day opening period to fall a bit short of the expectations from Paramount Pictures (VIA, VIAB). The movie did perform well for IMAX, hauling in $13.5M from the 336 theaters it played in the big-screen format. Comment! [Consumer]
- Sunday, May 5, 11:56 AM Box office roundup: 1) Revenue continues to pour in at a breakneck pace for Disney's (DIS) Iron Man 3. Early estimates for the movie's opening U.S. weekend are for a $170M haul (vs. ~$150M consensus) to push global sales for the film to over $360M. 2) Keep an eye on IMAX (IMAX). The company is seeing the percentage of moviegoers in the U.S. choosing to see big tentpole films in the big-screen format increase - including an impressive 10% this weekend for Iron Man 3. 3) Analysts at Cowen and Co. think Warner Bros. (TWX) could have a big summer with The Hangover Part III and The Great Gatsby set up to beat estimates while they warn DreamWorks Animation (DWA) could struggle with 3D computer-animated film Turbo facing serious competition. 4 Comments [Consumer]
- Wednesday, May 1, 1:37 PM A standoff between movie studios (SNE, VIAB, CMCSA, LGF, TWX) and China's government over the percentage of the box office take studios can keep could have big implications on revenue totals down the road. Moving to a 25% cut from 13%-17% seemed like a big win, until China starting toying around with some extra taxes to levy on the group. The development is also something to watch for IMAX if it sees its pipeline cut down a bit. The tricky part: Playing hardball with China means studios risk getting banned from the country entirely to see that cut go all the way to 0%. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Monday, April 29, 2:55 PM The smashing success of Disney's Iron Man 3 in international markets helped IMAX (IMAX +0.6%) put in a $7.1M weekend in 113 theaters. The company said it broke opening day records in Taiwan, the Netherlands, Brazil and the Philippines. The box office rush bodes well for IMAX's Q2 results after Q1 was a little lackluster largely due to the lack of tent-pole titles from Hollywood. 2 Comments [Consumer]
- Thursday, April 25, 7:23 AM More on IMAX's (IMAX): Revenue fell during the quarter with a lack of tentpole titles out but the company remain optimistic in front of the stacked summer season. IMAX reports 25 new theater signings and 17 new installations during the period. (PR) Comment! [Consumer, Earnings]
- Thursday, April 25, 7:12 AM IMAX (IMAX): Q1 EPS of $0.08 in-line. Revenue of $49.9M misses by $4.25M. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News, Consumer]

- Thursday, April 18, 2:08 PM Highlights from CinemaCon: 1) The debate over shortening theater release windows picks up with the displeasure of move theater operators (CNK, CKEC, IMAX, RGC, MCS, RDI) over the practice losing steam as the appeal of boosting VOD revenue entices studios. 2) Disney's (DIS) presentation was a hit with screening of both Monsters University and The Lone Ranger being well-received on top of the company's dramatic Star Wars news . 3) What's next for theaters? The success of both IMAX in international markets and new premium theaters popping up in the U.S. has operators exploring upgrades to theater complexes to add features such as bars, lounges, and restaurants. Naturally, ticket prices would be boosted to pay for it all. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Tuesday, April 16, 7:52 AM IMAX (IMAX) and Paramount Pictures (VIA, VIAB) extend their partnership with a new agreement to feature upcoming films in the IMAX format. The commitment to IMAX for films such as Transformers 4 (June 2014) and Interstellar (November 2014) helps ensure the company's pipeline looks promising for global markets. Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, April 15, 7:48 AM IMAX (IMAX) strikes a deal with Cinepolis in Mexico to open up five new theaters. The two companies are partnering in both Mexico and Brazil to bring the IMAX format to high-growth areas. Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, April 12, 8:38 AM IMAX (IMAX) plans to make a statement in Hollywood with a new deal to open a mammoth theater at the historic Grauman's Chinese Theater. Though it's a major force in overseas markets such as Russia and China, the saturated theater market in the U.S. has kept the company only slowly evolving out of showcasing documentaries and exhibitions. What to watch: The close ties between IMAX and Chinese film companies could pay dividends in the U.S. as more theater chains get snapped up by Chinese firms. Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, April 5, 1:10 PM By all indications the rapid expansion of movie theaters in China isn't saturating the market quite yet as last year's box office haul of 17.07B yuan ($2.75B) marked an impressive 30.2% Y/Y increase. Though all the major Hollywood studios have their hands in the pie, IMAX (IMAX -0.3%) is the company that is the purest play on China film industry growth. (Previous: China's influence on film production plans) Comment! [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Thursday, March 21, 12:56 PM The combined box office from BRIC nations could double to $12.1B by the end of 2017, according to new industry research. Growth in China, Russia, Brazil, and India is being led by higher ticket prices and a rapid pace of screen construction. Though it's good news for Hollywood studios (TWX, DIS, LGF, VIAB, CMCSA, SNE) looking for global growth opportunities, IMAX (IMAX -0.9%) is the company that could see the biggest benefit if the rosy forecast pans out. Comment! [Consumer]
- Wednesday, March 20, 8:39 AM Disney (DIS) says it will distribute an upcoming 3D movie from director Toni Myers jointly with IMAX (IMAX). The partnership will mark the first time the two companies produced an IMAX movie together. 4 Comments [Consumer]
- Monday, March 18, 2:12 PM IMAX (IMAX +1.4%) will expand further Turkey with an agreement with Mars Group to open three new theaters in Turkey. The nation is underpenetrated, according to IMAX. Comment! [Consumer]
