Friday 4:47 PM ARM (ARMH) can hold its own against Intel (INTC) as the latter company enters the mobile app processor market, argues UBS' Gareth Jenkins, who's upgrading shares to Buy. Among Jenkins' arguments: 75% of the top smartphone apps are specifically written with ARM-based processors in mind; the company continues to innovate with solutions such as its big.LITTLE architecture; and Intel has to compete with 15+ app processor vendors (most of whom use ARM CPU cores). - Friday 11:38 AM Neowin.net provides details about Dell's (DELL) first Windows 8 (MSFT) tablet. The specs appear ho-hum: a 10.1" display, a dual-core Intel (INTC) Clover Trail CPU with integrated graphics; dual cameras; a solid-state drive; and a thickness of 0.4" (the new iPad is at 0.37") . Expect H-P, Nokia, and about a dozen or so Asian OEMs to launch similar hardware, only with some models sporting ARM-based (ARMH) CPUs instead. (more on Windows 8) [Tech]
- Friday 8:58 AM At the top of Goldman Sachs' VIP List of 50 stocks most important to hedge funds is Apple (AAPL), followed by GOOG, ESRX, MSFT, QCOM, C, GM, PCLN, JPM and LMCA. Leading the list of the firm's top 50 short positions is JNJ, XOM, INTC, IBM, AMZN, T, CVX, VZ, DUK and DIS. [Quick Ideas]
- Thursday 6:45 PM The E.U. will make a final ruling on June 27 regarding a $1.1B fine levied on Microsoft (MSFT) in '08 for failing to comply with an order to share information about its server OS products to guarantee networking software interoperability, and release a version of Windows that doesn't feature Windows Media Player. The ruling could have implications for Intel's (INTC) attempts to overturn a $1.33B fine levied in '09. [Tech]
- Wednesday 10:28 AM For whom the Dell tolls: As the IT giant's FQ1 miss and commentary lead to a tech selloff, PC-related names get hit harder than most, no doubt thanks to the 10% drop seen in Dell's (DELL -15.8%) notebook sales. Rival H-P (HPQ -4.4%), due to report this afternoon, is among the biggest losers. Also selling off: INTC -3.1%. MSFT -3.2%. AMD -3.1%. LOGI -3.3%. (more on DELL) [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday 5:36 PM During its FQ1 earnings call (webcast), Dell admits its 10% Y/Y drop in notebook sales had much to do with tablet cannibalization (more with consumers, but also among businesses). Dell also claims price competition (especially in emerging markets) hurt PC sales, and an inefficient sales structure affected enterprise sales. Also, it adds April was particularly weak, and some enterprises are delaying IT purchases. DELL -12% AH. HPQ -2.5%. INTC -1.1%. (presentation - PDF). [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Tuesday 12:19 PM In tandem with Windows 8's fall launch, AMD is planning to release a new low-voltage CPU line, codenamed Hondo. Though based on an older 40nm manufacturing process, Hondo chips will consume only 4W-5W of power, making them rivals to Intel's (INTC) upcoming Clover Trail CPUs. AMD's Trinity CPU line, released last week, has been praised for its battery life gains, though commentary about its performance has been muted. [Tech]
