- Tuesday, May 21, 1:53 PM More on Intel's reorg: Intel's PC, mobile, and server chip units, previously reporting to chief product officer Dadi Perlmutter, will now report to Brian Krzanich. Software/services chief Renee James, recently named President, will also now be in charge of manufacturing and parts of Intel's (INTC +0.2%) security ops. Krzanich in an internal e-mail: "I am committed to being bolder, moving faster ... we will listen, learn and then make adjustments in order to keep pace." Mike Bell, who has spearheaded Atom CPU development, is now head of Intel's "new devices" unit. Ex-Infineon exec Herman Eul will now fully oversee Intel's mobile ops. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, May 21, 12:09 PM New Intel (INTC +0.6%) CEO Brian Krzanich has already signed off on a major reorg, one that includes the creation of a "new devices" unit, Reuters reports. Krzanich has been promising mobile will become a bigger priority for the chip giant. "We see that we've been a bit slow to move in the space ... We're well positioned already and the base of assets we have will allow us to grow much faster." 4 Comments [Tech, Breaking News]
- Friday, May 17, 2:15 PM "Intel's culture is blessedly not the culture of a CEO," says the departed Paul Otellini in an in-depth Atlantic piece. Journalist Michael Malone likens Intel's (INTC) culture to that of a giant, regimented, research team (contrasting sharply with many tech firms). "Intel was in many ways a camp for bright young people with unlimited energy and limited perspective ... There was also the belief ... that the organization to which they've attached themselves is the greatest of its kind." It's now up to new CEO Brian Krzanich to leverage that culture to rapidly grow Intel's mobile processor sales in the face of major challenges. Krzanich is already promising a stronger mobile focus. - Wednesday, May 15, 5:05 PM Mellanox (MLNX) is acquiring Kotura, a developer of silicon photonics interconnect tech, for $82M in cash. The deal, which is expected to be accretive to 2014 EPS by $0.01-$0.03, is noteworthy in light of Intel's (INTC) efforts to both develop both InfiniBand solutions and 100G silicon photonics interconnects for its server CPU platforms, with the goal of creating more modular server architectures. This purchase seems aimed at trying to meet that long-term threat. 2 Comments [Tech, M&A]
- Monday, May 13, 8:42 PM Sporting 4 cores and the same GPU platform and manufacturing process as Ivy Bridge CPUs, there's little doubt Intel's (INTC) Bay Trail Atom CPUs (due in Q4) will deliver big performance gains over the current Clover Trail. ReadWrite's Mark Hachman wonders if Bay Trail will be too good, cannibalizing sales of Core CPUs with the help of a relatively resource-efficient Windows 8. Though more demanding users will want Haswell Core systems (esp. since Bay Trail lacks multithreading), will some mainstream users decide Bay Trail is good enough? Intel wants to eventually reach a ~$200 price point for Atom-based touchscreen Android laptops, and a ~$300 price point for Windows systems. 2 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, May 6, 4:00 PM Palo Alto Networks (PANW -1%) closes modestly lower in the wake of Intel's (INTC) deal to buy Finnish security hardware vendor Stonesoft. Stonesoft's product line includes next-gen firewalls, and though its presence in this space doesn't compare with PANW's, Intel's resources and McAfee's security software (could allow for richer content analysis) stands to make it a tougher rival. Stonesoft, which relies on a security engine that can be modified to support different types of hardware, also makes intrusion prevention systems, but shares of Sourcefire (FIRE +0.5%), the leader in this market, have closed slightly higher. 5 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, May 6, 3:20 AM Intel's (INTC) security software unit, McAfee, has agreed to acquire Finish network firewall provider Stonesoft for around $389M, with the offer of €4.50 a share representing a 128% premium to the latter's closing price of €1.97 on Friday. The deal comes despite the slump in the PC industry hurting sales of security software. (PR) 9 Comments [M&A, Tech, Consumer]
- Sunday, May 5, 1:26 PM The GPUs integrated with mid-range and high-end versions of Intel's (INTC) upcoming Haswell CPUs could be a threat to AMD and Nvidia's (NVDA) discrete GPU sales, ZDNet points out. Intel claims the GPUs, codenamed Iris, will deliver a 2x-3x performance gain (depending on the CPU model) over the ones integrated with comparable Ivy Bridge CPUs. However, more power-efficient Haswell ultrabook chips will ship with HD 5000 GPUs (though Intel still promises performance gains here). Integrated GPUs (both from Intel and AMD) have been steadily taking share from discrete GPUs for years. (more on Haswell) 11 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, May 2, 9:38 PM "Intel’s (INTC) competitive advantage is its expertise in manufacturing," writes Quartz's Christopher Mims, making the case ex-manufacturing chief Brian Krzanich is a better choice for CEO than an outsider. Though its mobile processor lines have lagged in adopting its most advanced processes, Intel's PC CPUs are made on a 22nm process at a time when Qualcomm, Nvidia, and others are at 28nm ... and they should get to 14nm while rivals are at 20nm. If Krzanich can eliminate the lag, it could give Intel an edge when battling for mobile design wins, at least when 4G modem integration (where Qualcomm has a lead) isn't required. (previous: I, II) 3 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, May 2, 1:40 PM Brian Krzanich is a "well-respected insider," but he lacks the "market acumen to lead [Intel] during a period of tectonic change," says Piper about Intel's (INTC +0.3%) next CEO. RBC is more positive, and thinks Krzanich is behind Intel's foundry efforts. Krzanich takes over a company with huge scale and a manufacturing process lead, but which arguably faces both tactical and strategic challenges in mobile. The tactical: Apple and Samsung are committed to in-house processors, and Qualcomm has a major lead in integrated baseband/app processors. The strategic: even if Intel's mobile share soars, ASPs for mobile processors are well below those for PC CPUs, thus cannibalization could still take a toll. 6 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, May 2, 9:12 AM Intel (INTC) names COO Brian Krzanich its next CEO; he'll take over from Paul Otellini following Intel's May 16 shareholder meeting. Krzanich, who first joined Intel in 1982, was named COO early last year after having overseen Intel's manufacturing ops, and (along with CFO Stacy Smith) became an executive VP at the time Otellini announced his retirement plans. The Street isn't crazy about the move, INTC -1% premarket. (PR) 15 Comments [Tech, Breaking News, Top Stories]
- Thursday, May 2, 4:53 AM The ghost of Lehman Brothers sues Intel (INTC) over a $1B swap deal originated in 2008, Reuters reports. Ultimately, Lehman says it was to deliver 50.5M shares of Intel stock while Intel claims the deal was for $1B in shares regardless of the stock price. Intel seized $1B in cash collateral which Lehman claims is unfair given that, as of the termination of the swap (September 29, 2008), "the value of 50.55M shares of Intel common stock was about $873M, not $1B." 1 Comment
- Friday, April 26, 4:57 PM Intel's (INTC) Haswell CPU line will officially launch on June 3, the chip giant announces; CNET reported 3 weeks ago Intel has begun shipping Haswell parts to OEMs ahead of a launch. More costly CPUs are expected to arrive first, followed by low-end CPUs later in the year. Meanwhile, Intel confirms it wants to sell Atom CPUs for $200 Android touchscreen PCs (previous), while adding systems based on its Core CPUs could sell for $400-$500. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Tuesday, April 23, 3:39 PM Haswell CPUs are expected to account for less than 1/5 of Intel's (INTC +2%) desktop CPU shipments at year's end, "sources from PC players" tell Digitimes (hit-and-miss with these kinds of forecasts). The sources add late Q3 launches for low-end Haswell desktop parts and Intel's n-frills H81 motherboard chipset (as compared with earlier launches for more powerful CPUs) will affect sales. Meanwhile, RealWorldTech's David Kanter's analysis of Haswell's specs lead him to think chip packages will come with 128MB of embedded DRAM to boost performance. 2 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, April 23, 12:54 PM AMD (AMD +2.6%) updates its G-Series embedded processor line by launching an SoC that combines a Jaguar CPU core (found in AMD's next-gen console processors) with a Radeon 8000 GPU - AMD claims a major performance edge over Intel's (INTC) Atom CPUs (naturally, Intel isn't standing pat), and says GE will use the SoC in new rugged embedded systems Also, an ARM-based embedded CPU is promised. AMD has promised 20% of its revenue will come from embedded/semi-custom solutions (includes console chips and SeaMicro, among other things), and has set a long-term goal of getting 40%-50%. Given PC industry conditions and Intel's aggressive spending, there's a logic to that strategy. 2 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, April 19, 6:17 PM With demand for Windows 8 touch systems coming up short, it looks as if Intel (INTC) is betting big on Android: Digitimes reports Lenovo (LNVGY.PK) will launch an 11" Intel-based Android notebook/tablet convertible for its Yoga line in May, and that H-P, Toshiba, Acer, and Asus will follow with similar hardware in Q3. CNET follows up by reporting Intel has design wins for ~$200 Android tablets - Intel is also shooting for that price point for Win. 8 tablets. One major challenge for Android convertibles: most Android apps haven't been written with keyboard/mouse use in mind. 13 Comments [Tech]

Michael Blair: August 27 likely a winner and Jan 26 hard to ignore value. If Intel takes off, you will do well.

gabi1: thanks, im thinking to get the august 26 calls, better chance to hit 26/27 than 30, but you'll get richer if it gets to 30 -
Michael Blair: Nothing wrong with the lower strikes. Less risk but less leverage.

$INTC Time to cash out the May $24 Intel calls at $0.57. Not bad, $142,500 proceeds from $10,600 investment. Sometimes they work. - View all 9 replies
