- Monday, June 17, 9:23 AM AMD +4.6% after Barron's praises the chipmaker, arguing its SeaMicro server platform unit will help grow its share of an x86 server market where 96% of all hardware uses Intel's (INTC) CPUs (per IDC). SeaMicro, acquired in 2012, has developed innovative tech (.pdf) for linking hundreds of CPUs in a dense, low-power fabric that's well-suited for the "hyperscale" architectures embraced by Web/cloud firms, among others. The unit uses both AMD Opteron and Intel Atom CPUs, will eventually support ARM-based chips, and wants to license its tech to server OEMs. SeaMicro says it convinced Intel to supply it with Atom CPUs instead of costlier Xeon parts by arguing it "would sell [4x] as many Atom chips as Xeon chips, and that Intel would make [1.7x] the revenue as they would have with Xeon." 2 Comments [Tech, Quick Ideas, On the Move]
- Friday, June 14, 4:47 AM Intel (INTC) is reportedly encountering difficulty in signing up programming deals for its upcoming online TV service, with major media companies such as Disney (DIS), Time Warner (TWX), Viacom (VIA), News Corp (NWS) and Comcast (CMCSA) yet to sign on. Pressure from cable TV providers such as Time Warner (TWC) is one reason, as is a fear of damaging the current lucrative ecosystem that the content and service providers enjoy. 21 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Thursday, June 13, 6:00 AM Time Warner Cable (TWC) is reportedly one of the most aggressive of the incumbent TV broadcasters that are trying to strangle the emergence of Internet competitors at birth. The broadcasters are trying to prevent media companies from selling their content to the likes of Intel (INTC) and others, including through the use of financial incentives and penalties, and contract clauses that forbid the sale of channels to Internet distributors. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Tuesday, June 11, 7:17 PM AMD's new 8-core FX-9370 (4.7 GHz.) and FX-9590 (5 GHz.) desktop CPUs turn back the clock to the days when clock speeds were a huge deal. AMD claims the 9590 is the "first commercially available 5 GHz. CPU," and promises unmatched gaming/multimedia performance. Both chips use AMD's existing 32nm process and Piledriver architecture (launched in 2012). As AnandTech observes, AMD is countering the launch of Intel's (INTC) 22nm Haswell CPUs, which offer modest performance gains but big power savings, by heading in a very different direction. Chips based on Piledriver's sucessor, Steamroller, launch later this year; they'll use a 28nm process. 24 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, June 11, 7:58 AM Clients were net sellers of stocks in May, according to the TD Ameritrade Investor Movement Index. The gauge declined for a 2nd consecutive month to 5.02 from 5.31 previously. Clients were net buyers across the materials sector (XLB), but reduced exposure elsewhere. After steadily accumulating the stock for months, clients turned net sellers of Apple (AAPL). Other tech names seeing selling: MSFT, CSCO, INTC. Notable buying activity: TSLA, BRK.B, KMP, VALE, LINE. 15 Comments
- Monday, June 10, 2:09 PM Apple (AAPL +0.5%) unveils new 11" and 13" Macbook Air models. Aided by Intel's (INTC +1.7%) low-power Haswell CPUs, Apple claims the 11" Air will get 9 hours of battery life, and the 13" model 12 hours. The 11" model goes for $999 (128GB) and $1199 (256GB), and the 13" model $1099 and $1299; they start shipping today. Also announced: a revamped Mac Pro that's 1/8 the size of the current model and supports dual AMD (AMD +2%) FirePro GPUs; new AirPort Wi-Fi access points; and new 2tB/3TB Time Capsule hard drives. "Can't innovate anymore my ***," exclaims VP Phil Schiller. (more on Apple) (live blog) (webcast) 12 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, June 10, 10:36 AM A "Wintel Resurrection" is underway, declares Jefferies' Mark Pipacis, who's raising his PT on Intel (INTC +1.4%) to $27 while reiterating a Hold. Lipacis is more upbeat about Chipzilla following Computex, and is encouraged by Clover Trail and Bay Trail Atom CPU traction, the Galaxy Tab 3 design win, and Microsoft's (MSFT) more aggressive Windows 8/Office pricing. Last week, Piper, Sterne Agee, and JPMorgan all raised concerns about Bay Trail's potential to cannibalize sales of costlier notebook CPUs. 2 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, June 7, 7:08 PM Intel (INTC) is "offering to pay as much as 75 percent more than traditional cable rates" to secure content for its Web TV service, Reuters reports. The higher rates likely have to do with Intel's upstart status, and its interest in offering features (e.g. an advanced cloud DVR) and more service flexibility (but not full-blown a la carte) than standard pay-TV offerings. Intel is said to have reached agreements with CBS, News Corp., and Viacom "over how their content would be distributed;" talks with NBC Universal are said to be less advanced. A March report indicated Intel had "signed off on the broad outlines of its service" with Time Warner, NBC, and Viacom. (previous) 13 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, June 7, 7:30 AM Intel (INTC) slides 1% premarket as Piper Jaffray downgrades to Sell and trims its price target by $1 to $20, citing weak PC demand and intense competition in processors. 18 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, June 5, 6:38 PM "Many companies we met with in the PC food chain stated 2Q13 is tracking towards the low end of guidance," writes JPMorgan's Christopher Danely (previous), calling this a negative for Intel (INTC) and AMD. Danely also puts the ASP for Intel's Atom tablet CPUs at $25-$30 (a little above Morgan Stanley's $20), and the ASP for its notebooks CPUs at $110. Bernstein's Stacy Rasgon, meanwhile, thinks 2013 is beginning to resemble 2012, when Intel ramped Ivy Bridge production on hopes of a demand pickup, and was "forced to cut loadings and inventories" at year's end. He also estimates Intel's server CPU unit will need to grow 20%+ Y/Y in 2H to meet aggressive guidance. 7 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, June 5, 11:57 AM Intel's (INTC -1.6%) tablet momentum isn't enough to offset continued PC weakness, and thus 2H estimates are at risk, argues JPMorgan's Christopher Danely. Though Intel is beginning to pick up Android tablet wins and could benefit from a flurry of new Windows 8 tablet/convertible launches, its tablet CPU ASP is well below its PC CPU ASP. Morgan Stanley estimates Intel's Atom tablet CPUs will have a $20 ASP in 2014 and 2015. 11 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, June 4, 1:44 PM Intel (INTC +1.8%) roundup: 1) Intel follows up on its first Haswell launches by unveiling over a dozen CPUs aimed at notebooks and tablets/convertibles. Intel promises an 11% ultrabook performance boost relative to Ivy Bridge, and 7+ days of standby. Though Intel wants $600 ultrabooks in 2013, near-term pricing is a concern. 2) Intel claims 15 convertible designs are in the pipeline, and that there should be 50 by year's end. Plenty of designs are being shown off at Computex. 3) Intel's VC arm is creating a $100M fund to invest in "perceptual computing" tech such as voice/gesture control and emotion sensing. 4) Intel shows off a demo phone containing its Merrifield Atom CPU. The 22nm chip will ship early next year, and compete against Qualcomm (QCOM) and Nvidia's (NVDA) high-end offerings. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Monday, June 3, 11:44 AM Intel (INTC +4%) officially launches its first Haswell desktop and notebook CPUs. Thanks to both CPU architecture and platform improvements, Intel is promising a 30%+ boost in battery life over the current-gen Ivy Bridge under load, and more than a doubling of standby time to 10-13 days. Faster wake times, major GPU improvements (thanks to Iris) and thinner form factors are also promised. Reviews of high-end Haswell parts from CNET and AnandTech indicate moderate CPU performance gains, but also noticeable power improvements in real-life use. Dell, Asus, and others are announcing Haswell systems ahead of Computex, which begins tomorrow. (previous) (Barron's) 2 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, June 3, 7:50 AM Intel (INTC) gains 1.3% premarket after getting the Barron's treatment in a good way over the weekend. FBR Capital chimes in, upgrading to Buy. 4 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Saturday, June 1, 8:55 AM Intel (INTC) might be a double in the next five years, writes Jack Hough in Barron's, as the company racks up market-share gains in tablet and smartphone chips, sees big demand for lucrative server chips, and PC sales stabilize. Then there's the company's capital spending-spree - it should cut manufacturing costs and allow more wins in high-end foundry contracts, including from Apple which has been forced to use Samsung for the work. 42 Comments [Quick Ideas, Tech]
- Friday, May 31, 6:26 PM Qualcomm (QCOM) held a 97% share of the 4G LTE baseband chip market in Q1, estimates Strategy Analytics. Chalk that up to heavy R&D spend and a big head-start in developing chips with support for both multi-mode (2G/3G/4G) operation and a wide variety of frequency bands. That number is likely to fall going forward as offerings from Nvidia, Broadcom, and Intel arrive, but Qualcomm isn't standing still either. SA also estimates Qualcomm, aided by its Snapdragon baseband/app processor line, had a 59% share of the broader baseband market, up from 52% in 2012. That dwarfs #2 Intel's (INTC) 12% share and #3 MediaTek's 10%. ST-Ericsson and Spreadtrum (SPRD) rounded out the top-5. 3 Comments [Tech]
