Though IPG's materials processing laser sales (94% of revenue) rose 29% Y/Y, sales of lasers for other applications (science, telecom, etc.) fell - apparently sharply, since total rev. growth was only 15%. Q2 guidance is for revenue of $155M-$165M and EPS of $0.72-$0.82, in-line with a consensus of $162.7M and $0.78. Q1 book-to-bill was "solidly in excess of 1." Wednesday, March 13, 4:54 PM IPG Photonics (IPGP) acquires Mobius Photonics, a developer of UV fiber lasers for use in micromaching, drilling, and solar panel processing apps, for an undisclosed sum. IPG asserts the UV laser market could be a "significant sales driver" in the coming years, and notes Mobius owns a broad patent that covers the use of pulsed fiber lasers to create UV light. Comment! Though results were mixed, the industrial/electronics laser vendor guided in prepared remarks (.pdf) for FQ2 revenue of $193M-$203M, above a $192.7M consensus. Also, FQ1 gross margin rose 100 bps Q/Q to 42.6%, and book-to-bill was 0.96, a healthy figure in light of macro (Europe) and industry-specific (science, electronics/chips) challenges.
