- Thursday, December 1, 2011, 12:45 PM Lockheed Martin (LMT +1.4%) CFO Bruce Tanner says the defense contractor remains in an acquisition mode and would like to accelerate its pace from the last couple of years including dipping its toes back into the commercial pool. He says plays in the energy, health care, and cyber security sectors are all options as the firm looks to show positive revenue growth in 2012 in the face of inevitable defense budget cuts. Comment! [M&A]
- Wednesday, November 30, 2011, 3:03 PM Fitch Ratings says defense contractors face increasingly tough decisions on cash allocation even if the DoD spending cuts aren't as steep as forecast: The agency notes "spending reductions will translate into slower revenue and profitability growth, forcing defense firms to consider more aggressive cash deployment strategies to boost equity returns." Comment! [U.S. Economy]
- Wednesday, November 30, 2011, 8:15 AM Raytheon (RTN) announces it received Congressional and State Department approval to move forward with a $1.7B contract awarded from Saudia Arabia to upgrade the nation's Patriot Air and Missile Defense System. Comment! [Global & FX]
- Tuesday, November 29, 2011, 10:34 AM A spokesperson for American Airlines (AMR) adds substance to the view of analysts (previous) that the carrier's bankruptcy won't disrupt plans to upgrade its fleet. Exec Andrea Huguely tells The NY Times, "it is out intent" to take delivery on the new planes as scheduled. Helping push the deal forward for BA and EADSY.PK: The reality that the airline can save 15%-35% on its fuel bill by flying new Airbus A320s and Boeing 737s instead of gas-guzzling McDonnell Douglas MD-80s and Boeing 757s and 767s. Comment! [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Tuesday, November 29, 2011, 8:52 AM A large order from American Airlines (AMR) for new aircraft won over the summer by Boeing (BA) and Airbus (EADSY.PK) could still fly despite the carrier's bankruptcy filing, according to RBC Capital's Robert Stallard. "As AMR still wants to operate, we should see limited impact on aerospace." Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, November 8, 2011, 2:48 PM A Senate report identifies close to 1.8K occurrences of fake electronics parts within the defense industry supply chain. The investigation found roughly 70% of the counterfeit parts could be traced back to China with the U.K. and Canada also in the mix. Execs from RTN, LLL, and BA are at a Capitol Hill hearing to try and explain the "potential impact" of the problem on defense systems. 1 Comment [U.S. Economy]
- Monday, November 7, 2011, 7:36 AM General Dynamics (GD) agrees to acquire Force Protection (FRPT) for $352M to help shore up its extensive product line of combat vehicles. The $5.52 per share offer marks a 31% premium to the closing price of Force Protection on Friday. Comment! [M&A]
- Tuesday, October 25, 2011, 11:33 AM Lockheed Martin (LMT +0.4%) announces the UK's Ministry of Defence selected the firm to lead a £642M ($1B) contract as part of an overall $1.6B upgrade of the nation's military vehicles. The program to service the vehicles to beyond 2040 is expected to support 600 jobs in the U.K. Comment! [Global & FX]
- Monday, October 24, 2011, 12:11 PM The German government decides to scrap its involvement in Lockheed Martin's (LMT +0.8%) Meads air defense program, as well as pare back its inventory of Patriot missile systems. Defense Minister Thomas de Maiziere says the goal of the moves is to enable new contracts to be awarded - not cut spending per se. Comment! [Global & FX]
- Friday, October 21, 2011, 2:26 PM General Dynamics (GD +2.9%) lands a $1.05B contract from Canada to incorporate a comprehensive upgrade package to the Canadian Army's fleet of LAV III combat vehicles. Comment! [Global & FX]
- Thursday, October 20, 2011, 2:53 PM A Credit Suisse sector review on U.S. aerospace and defense contractors concludes Raytheon (RTN -0.1%) and Boeing (BA - 0.7%) are the least vulnerable to Pentagon spending cuts in the sector, while Lockheed Martin (LMT +0.6%) and L-3 Communications (LLL -0.1%) stand as the most exposed. The firm's report comes in advance of bipartisan “super committee” debate in Congress on how to cut another $1.2T over 10 years from the federal budget deficit. Comment! [U.S. Economy]
- Wednesday, October 19, 2011, 11:34 AM File under product labeling wars: Lockheed Martin (LMT +0.7%) announces a victory over rival Raytheon (RTN +1.1%) after the USPTO rules the term "paveway" is a generic term for a type of laser guided missile that cannot be trademarked such as Raytheon was eager to do. Comment! [U.S. Economy]
- Tuesday, October 18, 2011, 11:24 AM Star Wars defense redux? The Navy's ex-Chief of Naval Operations says the U.S. needs more long-range strike capability to support aircraft carrier groups increasingly stretched across the globe and facing large coastal defensive obstacles: "The U.S. has not had to deal with something like this since the Cold War." Contractors eager to bid: RTN, NOC, BA, GD. Comment! [U.S. Economy, Quick Ideas]
- Friday, October 14, 2011, 7:39 AM Airbus (EADSY.PK) backs the Rolls Royce-Pratt Whitney (UTX) joint venture to build turbofans for future mid-size aircraft, as CEO Tom Williams points to the deal as a competitive help for the A320. The loser in the deal looks to be General Electric (GE), with the new JV able to match its package deals. Comment! [Global & FX]
- Thursday, October 13, 2011, 11:26 AM Lockheed Martin (LMT -0.5%) sweetens the pot in its bid to land a $8B contract to build F-35 fighters for Japan, saying it will offer final assembly to Japanese firms if the nation backs up its offer over deals from rival Boeing (BA -1.8%) and an European consortium. Comment! [Global & FX]
- Tuesday, October 11, 2011, 2:25 PM Lockheed Martin (LMT +0.9%) competes with Northrop Grumman (NOC +0.4%) for a $1.7B contract from the U.S. Navy to develop a communications network (Canes) to link 190 ships, subs and operation centers over the next ten years. With the Navy's systems and equipment showing its age, the program is expected to survive defense budget cuts. Comment! [U.S. Economy]
