    Reports out of Japan tip off that Lockheed Martin (LMT +1.1%) will likely land a $8B order from the government for F-35s to replace an older fleet of F-4 Phantom fighters due to the jets "overwhelmingly superior performance" and stealth capabilities over rival offerings from Boeing (BA +1.7%) and Eurofighter Typhoon. Sources say the deal could be confirmed as soon as Friday.

    Southwest Airlines (LUV) announces it's placed an order with Boeing (BA) valued at nearly $19B to buy 150 of its 737 MAX airplanes and an additional 58 737s, bringing up its total firm orders with the company to 350 for 2012 through 2022. The carrier becomes the first customer of Boeing to finalize an order for the fuel-efficient 737s.

    Lockheed Martin (LMT +1.4%) CFO Bruce Tanner says the defense contractor remains in an acquisition mode and would like to accelerate its pace from the last couple of years including dipping its toes back into the commercial pool. He says plays in the energy, health care, and cyber security sectors are all options as the firm looks to show positive revenue growth in 2012 in the face of inevitable defense budget cuts.

    Fitch Ratings says defense contractors face increasingly tough decisions on cash allocation even if the DoD spending cuts aren't as steep as forecast: The agency notes "spending reductions will translate into slower revenue and profitability growth, forcing defense firms to consider more aggressive cash deployment strategies to boost equity returns."

    A spokesperson for American Airlines (AMR) adds substance to the view of analysts (previous) that the carrier's bankruptcy won't disrupt plans to upgrade its fleet. Exec Andrea Huguely tells The NY Times, "it is out intent" to take delivery on the new planes as scheduled. Helping push the deal forward for BA and EADSY.PK: The reality that the airline can save 15%-35% on its fuel bill by flying new Airbus A320s and Boeing 737s instead of gas-guzzling McDonnell Douglas MD-80s and Boeing 757s and 767s.

    A large order from American Airlines (AMR) for new aircraft won over the summer by Boeing (BA) and Airbus (EADSY.PK) could still fly despite the carrier's bankruptcy filing, according to RBC Capital's Robert Stallard. "As AMR still wants to operate, we should see limited impact on aerospace."

    A Senate report identifies close to 1.8K occurrences of fake electronics parts within the defense industry supply chain. The investigation found roughly 70% of the counterfeit parts could be traced back to China with the U.K. and Canada also in the mix. Execs from RTN, LLL, and BA are at a Capitol Hill hearing to try and explain the "potential impact" of the problem on defense systems.

    General Dynamics (GD) agrees to acquire Force Protection (FRPT) for $352M to help shore up its extensive product line of combat vehicles. The $5.52 per share offer marks a 31% premium to the closing price of Force Protection on Friday.

    Lockheed Martin (LMT +0.4%) announces the UK's Ministry of Defence selected the firm to lead a £642M ($1B) contract as part of an overall $1.6B upgrade of the nation's military vehicles. The program to service the vehicles to beyond 2040 is expected to support 600 jobs in the U.K.

    The German government decides to scrap its involvement in Lockheed Martin's (LMT +0.8%) Meads air defense program, as well as pare back its inventory of Patriot missile systems. Defense Minister Thomas de Maiziere says the goal of the moves is to enable new contracts to be awarded - not cut spending per se.

The firm's report comes in advance of bipartisan “super committee” debate in Congress on how to cut another $1.2T over 10 years from the federal budget deficit.

    Airbus (EADSY.PK) backs the Rolls Royce-Pratt Whitney (UTX) joint venture to build turbofans for future mid-size aircraft, as CEO Tom Williams points to the deal as a competitive help for the A320. The loser in the deal looks to be General Electric (GE), with the new JV able to match its package deals.
