- Wednesday, April 3, 10:58 AM Vanguard is reopening its Capital Opportunity Fund to new investors after being closed to new accounts since 2004. The fund's style of growth-stock investing has fallen out of favor with investors more interested in dividend and low-vol strategies. The fund lagged in 2010 and 2011, but beat the S&P last year and thus far this year. Comment!
- Monday, March 18, 4:57 AM Ron Rowland offers additional highlights on the recently expanded lineup of commission-free ETFs over at Fidelity including the following caveat: Funds not held for 30 days by retail investors or 60 days by RIAs using Fidelity as a custodian will be subject to a $7.95 per-trade commission. Some RIAs have complained that the longer holding period directed at them is unfair. Rowland spells out the full list of affected ETFs here. Comment!
- Monday, February 18, 9:01 AM "Human nature shirks from pain," says Jean-Marie Eveillard, summing up why most aren't cut out for value investing. The value fund he led for 25 years blew away the indices, but many clients didn't reap the rewards - fed up with Eveillard's old economy holdings, 2/3 of AUM exited during the internet bubble. Eveillard is still finding bargains in gold miners (GDX) and Japan, but is prepared to "suffer" until Mr. Market catches on. Chart of Value (IWD) vs. Growth (IWF). 14 Comments
- Tuesday, January 1, 12:00 PM Growth and value ETFs ran neck-to-neck in 2012. Key growth ETFs include IWZ, IWF, JKE, JKH, JKK, MDYG, SLYG and SPYG. Key value ETFs include IWW, EFV, IWS, IWN IWD, JKL, JKI, JKF, MDYV, SLYV, and SPYV. Comment! [Quick Ideas]
- Friday, October 28, 2011, 7:24 PM The S&P 500 will hit 1,400 within the next couple of months, asserts Federated's Phil Orlando. So don't bother with Treasurys, get out of defensive stocks and move into sectors that are positioned to benefit from the resumption of economic growth we appear to be seeing now. Kanaly Trust's James Shelton agrees; his top picks include: iShares Russell 1000 Growth (IWF), JPMorgan Alerian MLP Index (AMJ) and the SPDR Gold Trust (GLD).
