The modest gain in air traffic, reversing earlier declines, is showing up in airline stocks this afternoon: UAL (UAUA +6.8%), US Airways (LCC +5.5%), Continental (CAL +4.6%), AMR (AMR +3.6%), Delta (DAL +2.9%), Southwest (LUV +2.8%) and JetBlue (JBLU +2%) all up over 2% today.

In aggregate, short interest in U.S. stocks continues to decline. But that doesn't mean shorts have gone away altogether. Current favorites: Eastman Kodak (EK), Rite Aid (RAD), Baker Hughes (BHI), Starbucks (SBUX) and JetBlue Airways (JBLU).

JetBlue (JBLU +0.7%) reports September passenger traffic rose 9.8% on 8.6% higher capacity. The airline posted 1.92B revenue passenger miles and load factor (percentage of seats filled) rose to 77.6% from a year-ago 76.7%.

Airlines get a boost from JPMorgan, which notes passenger demand, lower fuel prices and mild weather have cooperated to vanquish much of the anxiety over possible bankruptcies. Firm upgrades the two most vulnerable carriers, lifting UAL (UAUA +12.4% premarket) to Overweight and US Airways (LCC +5%) to Neutral, but downgrades JetBlue Airways (JBLU -1%) and AirTran (AAI -0.6%).

JetBlue (JBLU +1.4%) air traffic in August stayed flat at 2.56B revenue passenger miles. Capacity increased 0.6%, while load factor (percentage of seats filled) slipped to 86.6% from 87.1% a year ago.

Delta Air Lines (DAL -0.2%) said June traffic dropped 6.3% and capacity dropped 5.8% while load factor (percentage of seats filled) fell to 85.5%. JetBlue (JBLU -0.7%) reported smaller declines, with traffic down 3.3%, capacity down 0.1% and a load factor that fell to 80.3%.
