- Wednesday, February 20, 2:10 PM More on Microsoft: VGleaks has posted what it claims are the specs for the next-gen Kinect. The device will reportedly have a wider field-of-view than the current Kinect sensor, feature a 1920x1080 color stream, and lower latency by 1/3. One recent rumor claimed the next Xbox will require the next Kinect to function. JDS Uniphase (JDSU) is a component supplier for the current Kinect, and might also support the next-gen model. - Tuesday, February 5, 10:49 AM Fabrinet (FN +6.7%) is rallying following its FQ2 beat, and is lifting both fellow contract manufacturers and the company's optical component industry clients along the way. SANM +3.2%. JBL +2.1%. FLEX +2.1%. BHE +4.5%. JDSU +2.3%. FNSR +4%. OCLR +1.9%. The gains come even though Fabrinet is guiding for FQ3 revenue of $147M-$151M and EPS of $0.29-$0.31, below a consensus of $161.7M and $0.37. Optical component stocks have been on a tear lately. - Friday, January 25, 6:15 PM Though Finisar (FNSR) and JDS Uniphase (JDSU) fell last week on concerns about 100G silicon photonics solutions from Intel and Cisco, "it's not time to panic," writes Light Reading's Craig Matsumoto. Intel's solution is meant for server boards, and the company doesn't see 100G server interfaces taking off for a few years. Cisco's offering, meanwhile, is only meant for Cisco hardware. Needham argues Intel's solution is only good for short distances, and that Finisar will be able to deliver 100G modules with "lower power, tighter density and lower costs" than Cisco's 1 Comment [Tech]
- Tuesday, January 22, 12:06 PM To the chagrin of telecom equipment firms, Verizon (VZ +0.9%) is staying frugal with its capex: after spending $16.2B in 2012 (down slightly Y/Y in spite of a 4.5% revenue gain), the carrier forecasts 2013 capex will be flat Y/Y. Big Red also says it wants to lower wireless expenses by $2B, and forecasts a 2013 wireless EBITDA margin of 49%-50% (up from 2012's 46.6%). Lower smartphone subsidies are a goal (possibly bad news for Apple and Samsung), and stock buybacks aren't ruled out - a heavy debt load and cash distributions to Vodafone limit Verizon's flexibility here. - Friday, January 18, 10:16 AM JDS Uniphase (JDSU -2.3%) and Oclaro (OCLR -2.7%) fall after rival Finisar (FNSR -6.2%) gets hit with a downgrade to Underperform from Jefferies over the adoption of silicon photonics tech. Earlier this week, Intel announced its silicon photonics solution, which can enable short-range 100G Ethernet links, would be used in Facebook's increasingly popular Open Compute data center platform. Also: JDS test equipment rival Ixia (XXIA -2.7%) has been downgraded to Neutral by Lazard, which cites valuation. 2 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Monday, January 14, 1:03 PM JDS Uniphase (JDSU -1.7%) is off a bit after Goldman downgrades shares to Neutral, arguing it sees limited upside following the company's recent rally. There's a good chance shares would be higher if not for the downgrade, thanks to test equipment rival Ixia's Q4 guidance hike. Stifel and Piper have offered more favorable takes (I, II) on JDS over the last 3 weeks. Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, January 10, 4:53 PM JDS Uniphase (JDSU) announces interim CFO Rex Jackson is now the company's full-time CFO. JDS also says it has hired Nokia Siemens/Nortel vet Susan Spradley to be in charge of developing the company's telecom test/measurement product line - test/measurement sales fell 8.5% Y/Y in the September quarter. Jackson became interim CFO following the August resignation of David Vellequette. (PR) Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, January 7, 11:27 AM JDS Uniphase (JDSU +2.3%) catches a bid after Stifel lifts its PT to $16 from $14, citing improving optical communications industry trends. UBS and Piper have also issued bullish notes in recent weeks, largely for similar reasons. With shares up nearly 40% since late October, is much of the good news now priced in? Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, December 27, 2012, 1:50 PM Light Reading sees higher carrier capex among the optical networking trends to look out for in 2013: the site points to comments from Finisar's (FNSR) CEO about European networks running at 65% of capacity (up from a prior 40%), as well as remarks from MKM noting "positive spending announcements" from AT&T, Sprint, Deutsche Telekom, and others. It also sees demand for 100G optical transmission systems taking off. Yesterday, Piper predicted component vendors would get a 2H13 lift from capex increases. Comment! [Tech]
