- Friday, October 5, 2012, 4:35 PM Oclaro (OCLR) -6.8% AH after warning it expects FQ1 (Sep. quarter) revenue of $149M, below a $162.2M consensus. Oclaro, which closed its acquisition of Opnext on July 23, blames weak market conditions, a slower-than-expected recovery of share lost thanks to Thai flooding, and a slow ramp of new products, including costlier 40G and 100G parts. Might the Opnext deal also be prompting customers to diversify? Optical component rivals JDSU, FNSR, OPLK, and NPTN could fall in sympathy. Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Friday, September 28, 2012, 11:00 AM Telecom equipment and optical component names slump in response to Adtran's (ADTN -8.9%) warning. CIEN -3.1%. JNPR -2.1%. APKT -3.3%. JDSU -3.5%. FNSR -4.3%. Adtran heavily blamed its shortfall on "delays in project rollouts" from U.S. carriers. That's a familiar refrain for both Adtran and its peers. AT&T and Verizon are doing their best to restrain capex in order to boost near-term profits, and the money that they are spending is increasingly focused on their faster-growing wireless ops. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, August 30, 2012, 9:16 AM More on Ciena's FQ3: The company expects FQ4 revenue of $455M-$480M, below a $499.5M consensus. It also expects gross margin to slip to ~40% from FQ3's 44.1%, and opex to grow to the "low $180s million" from FQ3's $175.2M. Optical transport (63% of sales) grew Y/Y but fell Q/Q. Ciena blames macro issues and "slower-than-expected rollouts" (likely related to 40G/100G optical gear) for its woes. CIEN -11.6%. Also lower: JDSU -2.2%. FNSR -2.7%. (other telecom equipment warnings: I, II, III, IV) Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Friday, August 17, 2012, 11:36 AM Oplink (OPLK +16.4%) soars after soundly beating FQ4 EPS estimates thanks to a 370 bps Q/Q increase in gross margin, and providing better-than-feared guidance. While Oplink's FQ1 revenue guidance range of $43M-$46M is below a $46.2M consensus, EPS guidance of $0.16-$0.22 is in-line with a $0.19 consensus. Optical component rival JDS Uniphase (JDSU +0.7%) rallied on Wednesday after posting earnings. Up in sympathy: FNSR +3.6%. NPTN +6%. Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Wednesday, August 15, 2012, 2:13 PM JDS Uniphase (JDSU +8.7%) surges after beating FQ4 estimates and providing healthy guidance. During its earnings call, JDS noted demand for 40G/100G optical components is growing rapidly - a positive for Ciena (CIEN +2.8%) - and hinted it has signed a new development contract with Microsoft. MKM believes JDS is gaining component share and is attractively valued, but Needham thinks a lot still depends on Q4 carrier budgets. FNSR +5.6%. OPLK +1.9%. NPTN +4.6%. OCLR +2.4%. Comment! DE -5%. 1 Comment [On the Move] - Tuesday, August 14, 2012, 4:27 PM More on JDS Uniphase's FQ4: The company expects FQ1 revenue of $415M-$435M, in-line with a $427.1M consensus. That's better than many feared, given the telecom capex environment. FQ4 optical component sales fell 10.9% Y/Y, but that's much better than FQ3's 22.5% drop. Test equipment sales (previous) fell 7.1%, and advanced optical sales, which include Kinect components, fell 1%. JDSU +5.7% AH. FNSR +2.3%. OCLR +4%. (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Tuesday, August 14, 2012, 4:10 PM JDS Uniphase (JDSU): FQ4 EPS of $0.15 beats by $0.03. Revenue of $439M (-6.8% Y/Y) beats by $11M. Shares +4.3% AH. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, August 14, 2012, 9:09 AM JDS Uniphase (JDSU) is buying GenComm, a Korean maker of wireless infrastructure testing gear, for ann undisclosed sum. JDS, which already has a distribution deal with GenComm that produced $7.5M in FY12 revenue, has been trying to lower its exposure to a weak optical component market by growing its telecom testing business, leading it to compete more with vendors such as Agilent (A) and Ixia (XXIA). Comment! [Tech, M&A]

Premarket gainers: PVSW +26%. ASTI +15%. SHLD +8%. JDSU +6%.
Losers: CHOP -12%. PSTI -7%. Comment! [On the Move] - Friday, August 10, 2012, 11:05 AM Goldman has launched coverage on Level 3 (LVLT +5.7%) and JDS Uniphase (JDSU +0.6%) with Buy ratings, though only the former seems to be benefiting Finisar (FNSR +0.7%) and Ciena (CIEN +0.1%) have been started at Neutral. Regarding Level 3, Goldman likes the impact of the Global Crossing acquisition on the company's balance sheet, and believes it could deliver "sustainable" free cash flow for the first time in its history. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Monday, July 23, 2012, 2:37 PM JDS Uniphase (JDSU -6.3%) is among the day's biggest tech losers. Benzinga notes put buyers have been aggressive, with over 8K August $8 contracts purchased this morning. JDS just announced it will deliver its FQ4 report on August 14 - a pretty late date for a quarter that closed on June 30. Its shares were hammered this month by bad earnings news from telecom equipment vendors, but rallied a little on Friday thanks to Verizon's capex guidance. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, July 19, 2012, 12:11 PM If there's a theme to Q2 tech earnings reports so far, it's "good enough." Just as several large-caps have rallied on so-so results, beaten-down telecom equipment and optical component names are rallying on Verizon's guidance for "flat to down" 2012 capex - some feared worse guidance in light of recent warnings. CIEN +5%. ALU +6.9%. JDSU +2%. FNSR +3%. JNPR +2.8%. Nomura sees Verizon's comments about 40G/100G optical investments as a positive for Juniper and Ciena. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, July 12, 2012, 10:11 AM Telecom equipment and optical component names fell yesterday due to Adtran's results, and today they're underperforming with the help oft Calix's (CALX -25.5%) warning. JDSU -3.3%. ALLT -4.9%. ADTN -3.6%. JNPR -2.7%. FNSR -2.8%. Aside from macro conditions, wireline telecom capex budgets are being pressured by the data demands of mobile networks, and the heavy debt loads of Euro carriers. Juniper reports on July 23. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
